Quick Justice.
Cable dispatches told not long
ago how the Ameer of Afghanistan
by a stroke of his pen cut down
the harems of his subjects to four
wives each. He has been admin
istering some very swift justice,
too. Not long ago a meat-seller
in Kabul abused another man and
taunted him about his religion.
The offender was brought before
the ameer who straightway sen
tenced him to be blown from the
mouth of a cannon, which was
done as soon as a nearby cannon
could be loaded. The same day
four well known robbers were
brought before him. He had
them put into iron cages and
bung up in four prominent thor
oughfares as a warning and at
last account they—or what is left
of them—were still these.

The Making of Gardens.
Francis Bacon: God Almighty
first planted a garden, and, in
deed, it is the purest of human
pleasures; it is the greatest re
freshment to the spirits of man,
without which buildings and pal
aces are but gross handiwork, and
a man shall ever see that when
ages grow to civility and elegancy,
men come to build stately, sooner
than to garden finely; as if gar
dening were the greater perfec
tion. I do hold it, in the royal-
order of gardens, there ought to
be gardens for all the months in
the year in which, severally, things
of beauty may be then in season.
About five years ago a Maine
woman, taking a consumptive
husband to the mountains of Ar
izona, was shown an old aban
doned claim by her Indian ser
vant. She took it, with great
difficulty secured $500 to work it,
and before the year was out sold
it for $50,000 and a life interest,
Philadelphia Press. What be
came of the husband doesn’t seem
to have been considered worth
mentioning.
After Flanigan.
Hon. J. C. Flanigan, represent
ative from Gwinnett county, was
indicted at- the last term of the
grand jury on the charge of il
legal voting, and a warrant is re
ported to be in the hands of the
sheriff of Gwinnett county for his
arrest.
A similar indictment is alleged
to have been found against Mr.
Flanigan at the September term
of the court, but a flaw in the
presentment made it void.
The warrant for the arrest of
Mr. Flanigan has not been served
owing to the fact of alleged ina
bility'of the officers of the law to
locate him. It he is arrested his
case will be tried at the called
term of court, opening in Law-
renceville next week.
When the similar indictment
was returned last fall, Mr. Flani
gan came out in a card arraigning
the grand jury and denying the
charge.
The grand jury in their present
ments states that Mr. Flanigan
has not paid his taxes for four
years within the last ten years.—

Weak?
“ I suffered terribly and was ex
tremely weak for 12 years. The
doctors said my blood was all
turning to water. At last I tried

A very eminent physician had
cured a little child of a dangerous
illness, - says the Philadelphia
Ledger. The grateful mother
turned her steps toward the house
of her son’s savior.
“Doctor,” she said, “there are
some services which cannot be re
paid, I really don’t know how to
express my gratitude. I thought
you would, perhaps, be so kind as
to accept this purse, embroidered
by my own hands.”
“Madam,” replied the doctor,
coldly, “medicine is no trivial,
affair, and our visits are only to
be rewarded in money. Small
presents serve to sustain friend
ships; but they do not sustain our
families. ”
“But doctor,” said the lady,
alarmed a nd wounded, “speak—
tell me the fee.”
“Two hundred dollars, madam.”
The lady opened the embroid
ered purse, took out five bank
notes of $100 each, gave two to
the doctor, put the remaining
three back in the purse, bowed
coldly and departed.

“Our little daughter bad an almost
fatal attack of whooping cough and
bronchitis,” writes Mrs. W. K. Havi-
iand, of Armonk, N. Y., “but, when
all other remedies failed, we saved her
life with Dr. King's New Discovery.
Our niece, who had Consumption in an
advanced stage, also used this wonder
ful medicine and to-day she is perfectly
vYeil.” Desperate throat and lung dis
