The Needle And Thread Tree.
The wonders of botany are ap
parently inexhaustible. One ot tin
most remarkable specimens is the
Mexican maguey tree, which fur
nishes a needle and thread all
ready for use. At the tip of eaoh
dark green leaf is a slender thorn
needle that must be carefully
drawn from its sheath: at the
-tame time it slowly unwinds the
thread, a strong, smooth fiber at
tached to the needle and capable
jf being drawn out to a great
length.—Mexico Herald.
It’s Business to Him.
Mr. J. M. Ashley, the republican
candidate for congress, sent up his an
nouncement this week to Postmaster
Tate. It is printed on a cheap piece of
quilt lining and reads as follows: “For
Congress, James M. Ashley—It’s a
plain matter of business." Some sug.
gest that "to me" should have been
added.—Dahlonega Nugget.
Big Hearted, Clever Fellow.-
Deputy! Collector Richardson, of
Gainesville, put in Mils appearance
here on Tuesday night. He differs with
ye editor politically, but that cuts no
figure with either one of us. He is a
big hearted, clever fellow and we love
to see him come, though If we were in
the blockading business we would cer
tainly want him to go the other way
for he always discharges *• his .duty let
it be against friend or foe.—Dahlon
ega Nugget.
Merck-Palmour,
At the Baptist parsonage Sunday
morning at 9 o’clock, Mr. Benjamin H.
Merck and Miss Ratlene M. Palmour
were united in marriage, Dr. J. A.
Wynne officiating. The wedding was
somewhat of a surprise to the friends
of the contracting parties, but the
young people have, nevertheless, been
the recipient of many hearty congratu
lations.
Mr. Merck 1b head of the firm of B.
H. Merck & Co., wholesale grocers,
and is one of Gainesville’s sterling
young business men. He has been
very successful in the commercial
worjd, and has hosts of friends. Ills
bride is the third daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. R. Palmour, and is a young wo
man of attractive personality and
Christian character.
Mr. and Mrs. Merek are at home to
their friends at Mis. B. A. Merck’s on
Maple street.

Respectfully,
dust Like Money From “Home.”
Mr. Ashley, the nominee for congress
by a portion of the republicans of the
ninth district, has rented rooms in the
Gaston building and is making his head
quarters at Gainesville, and is busy
sending out campaign literature. It is
said that he has at his hands all the
money he needB for this purpose. We
are glad to know that he has pleuty of
money and expects to spend it in the
ninth, for money helps any country, no
matter wlmt it is used for. Most cer
tainly Mr. Ashley can’t expect to be
elected. Spending this money 1r like a
person making a little child a Christmas
present. They expect no reward but
do it to be clever and kind.—Dahlonega
Nugget.

The news Duchess of Manches
ter, who is the daughter of a Cin-
oinnatti man, seems to be boating
other American duchesses at the
game of acquiring notoriety. She
has departed from the beaten path
of quarreling with her husband
aud securing a divorce, by way of
getting notices, and has become
a Buddhist. Her press agent
announces that she has in con
temptation a pilgrimage to Lbassa,
wher she will kueel and bump her
head on the floor in front of the
altar of the D’lai Llama. That
ought to be good for at least two
columns in the Cincinnatti Sun
day paper, with pictures.—Savan
