COL. FARROW OUT,
Mrs. dames Longstreet Appointed
Postmaster For Unexpired Term.
Ashley Does Dirty Work. But Is
Beat At His Own Game.
This morning Mr. \V. R. Keys,
postoffice inspector, took charge of
the Gainesville postoffice under in
structions from the department
at Washington. He will continue
in charge until the commission of
Col. Furrow’s successor arrives.
Last Friday night, telegrams
were received here from James M
Ashley at Washington saying that
he laid Col. Farrow removed as
postmaster by wire. Postoffice
inspector Keys arrivep Sunday
from Knoxville, Teim., but did
not assume charg of the office un
til this morning, whe Col. Farrow
was checked out. No they having
been -reported by Postoffice inspec
tor Oldfield of Ohio, and not one
here knows upon what charges
Col. Farrow was removed, In
spector Keys, as was ermnously
stated in this morning’s Constitu
tion, but dispatches from Wash
ington to the daily press stated
that it was because he was not a
citizen of Gainesvile. This is
untrue, because he has resided
hero for more than six years.
Ashley’ however, wanted to con
trol this office, and wanted to
kick Col. Farrow out because the
latter would not truckle to him
and did hot support him for the
empty honor of securing the Re-
publidan nomination for congress
in this district.
The news of President Roose
velt’s decision to appoint Mrs.
Loug6treet was received here yes
terday morning in adispatoh from
the President’s private secretary.
It caused intense gratification to
the people, mauy of whom sent
telegrams to the President expres
sing their satisfaction.
Col. Farrow’s administration
has beeu eminently satisfactory
and successful. His decapitation
has only been partially atoned
for by the appointment of Mrs-.
Longstreet, instead of allowiug
the oaTpetbagger Republican tan-
didate to control the appointment.
Mrs. liougatreet received a tele
gram at uocn today from Presi
dent Ribosevelt’s private secretary,
Mr. William Loeb, saying her com
mission would be Fowarded to her
this ‘.afternoon. Mrs. Longstreet
announces that she will make uo
change in the clerical force of the
office. ,
