Public Buildings.
Through a committe we have

the court room, and have bad
old vault tom out of the clerk’s

ro-todate vault con
noted adjoining and in the rear
the clerk’s office. This work
swell done, and, judging from
report of the Commissioners,
doue at a reasonable oost.
e wish to commend the County
mmiesioners for the manner in
ich they are caring for the pub*
buildings. We recommend,
wever, that the yard in the rear
the court house be oleaned off,
t the unsightly objeots now
nd there be removed, and that
trees and lawn be properly
ed for.
Woman’s Best.
rVe find at the Woman’s Rest
room fairly well furnished
th chairs, cot, eto , and one
set ip the yard as neatly and
y kept as the average town
|oset.
We understand that money was
t apart last year to equip the
house, jail, aud Woman’s
st with all necessary closets,
erage, eto., but we fiud the Best
glected as to this work.
[The cost to the county of main*

Confederate Pensioners.
6 are convinced from the par
investigation that has been
( le that some are drawing pen
who, under the law, are not
‘tied to draw. We believe that
retll l and complete investiga
ted reduoe the pension list,
therefore, have referred this
k to the special committee ap
pointed from this body to examine
the books of the county officers.
We ask that this committee make
a thorough investigation as to the
validity of the claims of those now
drawing pensions and report the
results of their labor to the next
grand jhry; which convenes Janu
ary, 1906.
County Officers.
We have adopted aud made a
part of these presentments the re
port of the special committee ap
pointed by the last grand jury to
examine the books of the county
officers. This report, which em
braces the first six months of this
year, is as follows:
To the Honorable Grand Jury of
Hall Superior Court, at the Julv term,
1906, Gentlemen:
The special committee appointed by
the Grand Jury at the January term to
examine into the affairs of the county
officers and report to your honorable
body, beg leave to submit the'follow-
ing:
ORDINARY.
We have examined the records', pa
pers and affairs in this office and report
them all in good shape: our worthy Or
dinary and his efficient clerk are meas
uring up to the full standard of their
duty and we commend them for the
same. In this connection we call at
tention to the fact that numbers of
Guardians, Executors and Administrat
ors fail to make annual returns as the
law requires. We suggest that the Or
dlnary require this done at once and on
failure of the parties to comply
that they be dealt with as the law
directs. Again, the law requires that
certain dealers should register with the
ordinary, and we find that in only a few
instances has this been done, and we
suggest that the grand Jury promptly
indict such persons, if they do not at
once come forward and register.
CLERK SUPERIOR COURT.
We take pleasure in stating that our
efficient clerk has the records and pa
pers in his office in excellent shape and
has system about everything connected
with this offlue. We note, with pleas
ure, that our Board of Commissioners
have had the vault in this office enlarg
ed and have made other needed improve
ments therein: UiIb work was badly
needed, and the clerk now has his books
and papers in such shape that they can
be readily gotten at. We can suggest
no needed changes in this office.
COUNTY TREASURER.
We have checked up the books and
vouchers of the County Treasurer and
find that everything is correct and that
the present incumbent is filling his of
flee in an able and satisfactory manner
SHERIFF.
We congratulate our county upon
the business-like manner in which the
affairs of the Sheriff's office are conduct
ed—the books are neatly and correctly
kept, the warrants placed in the hands
of the sheriff are promptly served and
we find no busines in his office unattend
ed to.
COUNTY SCHOOL C05IMISSIONED.
them correct ic every respect and we
take great pleasure in so reporting.
Our board, which now consists of Judge
W. N. Dyer, Chairman, D. H. Jarrett
and R. C. Simmons, should have the
commendation of every spirited citizen
for the effort being made by
them for the betterment of the public
roads. It is true that a considerable
amount was spent ior the necessary
equipment for the proper working of
the road, but this has been procured
and paid for. Considerable grading
has been done and we may look for
some permanent road work at an early
day. We ask your honorable body to
examine the road work already done
and to give same the approval it de
serves.
TAX RECEIVER.
We have examined the books of the
Tax Receiver so far as completed, and
find them neatly gotten up; as the
books will be before your honorable
body you can give them such further
examination as may be deemed neces
sary.
The Connty Surveyor being absent
on work and not having access to his
plat book we caunot report on same.
All of whieh is respeotfully submitted

We have examined the books and
vouchers in this office and find ttiem
as in the past, neat and correct. Mr.
Robertson is fully abreast with the ad
vancements in school matters and is
filling his office to the best satisfaction
of the people.
TAX COLLECTOR.
We find that the Tax Collector has
settled for 1904, and we find that the
settlement made with the commission
ers correct, and as this was the final
settlement with Mr. Charles, the for
mer Tax Collector. We congratulate
him and the county, that the affairs of
his office were ably administered during
his enoumbenoy.
COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF ROADS AND
REVENUES.
Beport of Commissioners of
Boads and Bevenues of Hall
County for six months erom
Jan, 1,1906, to July 1,
1905.
To the Honorable Grand Jury at the
July term, 1905, of Hall Superior Court,
Gentlemen:—
The undersigned commissioners of
Roads aud Revenues of said county of
Hall beg leave to submit the following
report:
Roaos and Bridges.
The various bridges throughout the
county, with very few acceptions are in
good condition, and we contemplate
making the repairs where needed as
soon as the same can be gotten to. We
have purchased a number of mules and
other road working equipment which
are now being actively used in the
grading of our public roads, and we
hope by this means to be able to make
such improvement as will meet the ap
provai of the tax payers of our county
and to this end we are contemplating
the establishment of a county chain
gang for use on the public roads, and
hope to be ready to put this matter in
to execution by the beginning of 1906
It is our intention to make such im
provements as we do make, permanent
so that It will not be necessary to do
the same work over each yeai.
Paupers Home.
The inmates in the home are well
cared for; well fed clothed, and atten
ded to, and all seem to be contented
The crops on the home farm are as
good as could be expected considering
the very unfavorable weather which
we have Just gone through. The bull
dings are in good condition, and we
are keeping the expenses of the same
well inside of the amount which has
heretofore been spent in maintainiug
the home.
County Funds.
We were forced to begin the year
with practically no funds in the treasu
ry on account of the same having been
spent in paying for the annex to our
Jail. The Jail work however, having
been paid, leaves us no indebtedness
except for borrowed monye, and we as
sure this honorable body that we shall
try to keep the expenditures of the
county as small as is consistent with
the proper care of the various claims
upon us.
County Treasurer.
We attach hereto, as a part of this
report, the report of the County ^Treas
urer, to which we call your attention
Treasurer’s Report Jan. I, to June 30
We have gone thoroughly through Ihe
books in this office and find them plain,
simple and easily understood. We find

County Home.
have visited the ootmty
We
home, have gone over the farn^
inspected the other property, at h
carefully investigated the condi
tion there existing. Our oonclu
sion is that tbe farm is a splendid
pieoe of property and that the
best interest of the oounty de
mauds that it shall not be sold
We^believe that the farm oan be
brought tq a high state of cultiva
tion by taking the county's mule*
from the road, from time to time,
and using them in turning the
iand, subsoilmg, and sowing peas.
In this way we believe sufficient
feed stuff oan be produoed on the
farm to feed the mules owned by
the oounty the year round.
Considering, as we do, the ooun
ty home a blessing to those in need
of help and shelter, we strongly
recommend that tbe oounty keep
the same, and we urge upon the
Commissioners that, where it a
practicable, they should have all
beneficiaries of the pauper fund*
brought to the home.
We find that at present there
are thirty-one inmates, all of whom
appear to be well oared for and
very well oontented. The cottage*
are dean and comfortable, and all
in good condition, except the one
oocupied by unole Ephriam Moss
This cottage needs some repairs;
the sohool building also need*
Borne work done on the front pillar.
We find on the county farm
about 75 bushels of oorn, 1000
bundles of fodder, 200 bundles of
oats, 8 good hogs, 8 milch oows.
1 oalf, 2 mules, 1 horse, 1 two-
horse wagon, 1 one-horse wagon,
one double aud one single set of
harness.
Personal Property.
In addition to the road-working
equipment furnished eaoh distriot
in the county, we find that the
County Commissioners have pur
chased teu mules at a cost of
$2,860, to be used on the roads
under the system recently adopted.
The mules are ail in very good
