WONDERLAND.
Bvveet eyes by sorrow still unwet,
To you the world is radiant yet,
A lalru'e hall of splendid truth
Toi.e.ied by the golden blaze of youth.
Where hopes and joys are ever rife
Ajii.U the mystery of life;
And seeking all to understand,
1 he VNo.ld to you Is Wonderland.
1 turn and watch the unshed tears
The furrowed track of ended years;
j see the eager hopes that wane.
The joys that die in deathless pain,
The coward Faith that falsehoods shake,
Tne souls that faint, the hearts that
break.
The Truth by livid lips bemoaned,
The Right defiled, the wrong enthroned-
.And, striving'Still to understand,
The world to tne is Wonderland.
A little time, then by and by
The puzzled thought itself shall die,
When, like the. F oil of 'UsUmi drums,

SEES WOMEN RULE WORLD
French Professor Makes Prophecy
That May or May Not Cause Feel
ings of Alarm.
OKI maids are going to rule the world
within another generation, and when
that happens all sensible men, looking
for happy existences, will try to flee
lids earth and try out the planet Mars.
This is the opinion of Professor Glr-
oult', probably the best-known French
authority iit political economy, who
addresses his beliefs to the University
of Poitiers. ,
“Women arc going to assume lead
ership. particularly in Europe, for the
next hundred,years," Professor (liroult
says. "This does not mean tlint civ
ilization is becoming .effeminate, nor
dues it result simply from the fact that
women will be numerically stronger.
Brit .there are too many women for the
marriageable mails, and hundreds of
thousands of them are being compelled
to' make ill-assorted . marriages in
which the man, in nearly every ease,
is the weaker partner.
“In that way women are gaining the
ascendency -and il is a eorlninty that
any society" ruled by women will lack
intellectual courage, logic and initia
tive 1 . Women married to men who are
' their inferiors will become embiiteied
■fyyitli life. Their exgeri'ojiee will dis
courage' other wmnen who are think
itig of marriage. I’resi ally we will
find a whole laxly of worn n, with a
large and nclive majority uf unmar
ried women controlling lliit.gs, and
men will have a very unhappy time."
This Frog Has doming Instinct.
This is the tale - of frog which
heat its master home on a journey,
traveling f libit Brooklyn to Kidgwood,
N. V. A''man who studied science
tind natural history, learned Unit frogs
are supposed to have the homing in
stinct. To prove it he bred a tad
pole into it ..full-grown bullfrog right
in his own goldfish howl, lied a string
to its leg, attached a piece of paper
with his name and address, took il
down to 1 ho river and l ade it fare
well. The man went to the movios
and out for dinner. When lie re
turned, lie says, the frog was croaking
on the front doorstep. Whether il
traveled by subway, elevated or sur
face eat',- or whether the long journey
was made by leaps and hops, remains
a mystery. .Anyway, its owner says
he knows now that frogs have devel
oped a love of home.
HOW IT'S DONE
Upon the first of every month
Man has a lot of bills.to pay;
He sorts them all; then pays the
small,
And files the larger ones away.
. Ministerial Dignity Sacrificed.
The heat melted ministerial dignity
when more than 100 clergymen, in at
tendance al a midsummer conference
at the Union Theological seminary, in
New York, discarded their coats and
discussed problems In their' shirt
sleeves. Rev. ,Dr. Henry Sloane Col’-
tin, of the Madison Avenue Presby
terian church, started it by saying:
"If HO per cent of you fellows will
take off your coats, I’ll take mine off,
too." The response was 300 per cent.
ARE YOUR JEWELS GENUINE?
Many Precious Stones Now Are Imi

Is Difficult.

Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, many
other stones, can now be imitated so
beautifully that it is no longer eusy to
detect the difference, upon a casual ex
amination, Pearls are made in a num
ber of varieties, and imitation pearls
are plentiful and often worn.
■ While only an expert can determine
whether some gems are genuine,
there are certain simple methods by
Which in most enses “the genuine ar
ticle” may be detected at home.
Color is usually considered the first
great criterion of all precious stones.
It is now generally conceded, however,
that color alone is not u criterion by
which stones may he judged; other
physical properties must he taken into
consideration by Ihe jewel expert.
The structure of the stone is a more
certain test. The optical properties
of the stone, hoyvever, are the. most
certain test—generally known as its
“refractive property.” This can he
ascertained by means of a small in
strument known us a “refractoniet^r.”
Refraction menus simply- the bend
ing of the light rays out of their nor
mal course, when passing through cer
tain solid objects. The degree to
which these light waves are bent is
called the! “refractive index.” In
most transparent bodies, including
gems, the refractive index is con
stant and known. Hence a degree of
refraction which differs from that
established for the species lends to
tin’ certainly that the stone under ,ex
amination is net a genuine one, but
an Imitation.—Uemvard Carrington,

Representative From the Mew Amer

King in Enid Pate. '
Benjamin .Franklin was about to be
presented to the From-h king on the
occasion of his first visit to Franco in
the capacity of representative from

of the time demanded that one going

a wigumker the day before to take
Franklin's measure arid lit him out

The gob, was on shore leave-and
happy because he had fotjnd a girl as
affectionate as he. His joy was
dimmed, however, for a bluecoat. had
forbidden spooning in the park and his
girl had tabooed it on the streets. But
life took a new turn when he saw a
man kiss liis wife farewell in front of
the Pennsylvania station,-New York.
He rushed his girl to: nrd a crowd hur

and bade’ her a fond faroivell. When
ihe- crowd thinned, they joined a throng
for Washington, and repeated tin* act,
-They repeated tt again before the Chi

This was too much for a colored por

stepped up to the gob. “Boss,” he said,

Oldest Frame Building.
The qtuiker meeting house at; Easton,
Md., is probably the oldest frame build
ing standing in the United States—
Just where-It was built and tis it was
built, without any change, additions or
subtractions, and with an authentic
record since M88, An occasional re
placing of the shingles on the roof and
of the weather-boarding are all the re
pairs it has had. Its frafiie, inside
woodwork, uud some, of the weather-
boarding are the same as when built
about: the same time that William
Pcun, who visited the building, was
trading with the Indians and laying
out Philadelphia.
The only preservative used on the
wood 1ms been old-fashioned white
wash on the outside. Seven of the
original plank seats and the wood
work Inside have had no paint what
ever. White oak - , white pine, cypress
and southern pine from the Muryhuul
forests were the woods used,

Tides in the Stars.
Some time ago it, Las reported by u
distinguished astronomer that the star j
called Xi Gendnorum, which has long
been known ns a variable,. is ip re
ality -double, but Its two components
are so close that no telescope is able
to separate them, and their existence
is proved by tlm shifting lines lu the
spectrum. The variations in bright
ness, it is thought, can only be due to
(lie attraction between -the two stars
raising Immense tides m their molten
or vaporous globes, which, through
the efforts.,of compression or other
wise, displace the spectral filnes',
