They encountered much rain and due to road repairs had to make a number of. detours. Although a little tired from the trip, it was nev ertheless enjoyable. Miss Susie Wal lace, Mr. Bell’s secretary; arrived ear lier in the week, coming on Jhe train. Sunday morning, Mr. Geo., L. Wood, of the Post Office department, in charge of rural mails and' star route service, accompanied by Mr. Shipp, of ficial photographer of the United States, bureau of forestry, reached Gainesville over thp Southern Railway, and will spend at least this week with Congress man Bell. Mr. Wood, who is regarded as one of the most efficient and popu lar officials of the post office depart ment, will make a survey of the rural and fjtar route service in the Ninth con gressional district with a view of fur ther extending the service if it is found that the present service is inadequate and needs to be extended. Mr. Wood has not visited Gainesville in a good many years,- having come here on of ficial business somq fourteen or sixteen years ago, .since which time Gainesville and this section has made some wonder ful strides of progress. He is given a most cordial welcome to Gainesville and the district, not only because of l^is splendid personality but because of his interest., in *the development of rural and star route service. R. W. Smith, Distript Secretary of.* the Sunday School Work of the Gainosvillei District, made a splendid re port of the great work done by the Sunday school institute of the Gaines ville district. One man said-no greater work is being done by any man in the Gainesville district than by Mr. R. W, Smith. , Rev. A, P. Watkins, who was olected assistant* secretary of this conference, is, a native of Jackson county. He is a member of one of Jackson county’s best families. At one time he was principal of Martin institute, and was a success fnl teacher. He is now one of the Gainesville district’s best preachers.
