December 10, 2022
Edward G Coll Jr., 12th
president of Alfred
University, passed away
Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022,
in Gainesville, Georgia, at
the age of 88. He served
as president at Alfred
University for 19 years,
from 1982-2000. Under his
leadership, the landscape
of the University changed
dramatically, both in terms
of physical facilities and
academic offerings.
During his presidency,
Alfred University became
the only institution in the
United States and only the
third in the world to offer
a doctoral degree in glass
science; implemented new
graduate degree programs
in a variety of areas,
including master’s degrees
in business administration,
biomedical materials
engineering science and
integrated electronic
arts; and launched
new undergraduate
programs in fields such as
molecular cell biology and
management information
systems. The oldest
classroom building on
campus, Kanakadea Hall,
underwent a complete
renovation in 2000-2001
and was renamed the
Edward G. Coll Jr. and
Carole Hulse Coll Center at
Kanakadea. On a national
level, Ed was long involved
in the National Collegiate
Athletics Association
(NCAA), serving as vice
chair of the President’s
Commission, 1988-91;
vice president for Division
III, 1994-96; a member of
the executive committee,
1994-96; and a member
of the NCAA Council,
1993-97. He was one
of four officers charged
with restructuring the
organization in 1995-96.
He was also very involved
with the Council for the
Advancement and Support
of Education (CASE),
a national organization
of professionals in the
development field. He
served as chair of the
CASE Board of Trustees,
as district director, and as
a national director from
1981-82 and again from
1989-93. Edward came
to Alfred University in
1982 from the University
of Miami, where he had
served as vice president for
development since 1973.
A Pittsburgh-area native,
he received his bachelor’s
degree in philosophy from
Duquesne University,
which later awarded him
an honorary doctorate.
He was also named a
Fulbright Fellow, studying
at Warwick University in
Coventry, England. In
2000, Ed was awarded
an honorary Doctor of
Humane Letters degree
from Alfred University.
Ed is survived by his
wife, Carole Lee Hulse
Coll—who was awarded
an honorary Doctor of
Fine Arts degree from
Alfred University in 1999;
his children: son and
daughter-in law, Tom and
Leigh Coll; daughter and
son-in-law, Jean and Frank
Mendenhall; son Peter

December 15, 2022
Laurie Castine Spiess, 96,
of Gainesville, Ga. died on
Thursday December 15,
2022. Born in Turbeville,
SC, her parents were
Francis Marion and Lottie
Leola Castine. She is
predeceased also by her
husband of fifty-five years,
Albert F. “Bud” Spiess.
Though she grew up in
Turbeville, Laurie and Bud

their home in Gainesville,
GA where they made
a multitude of friends.
Laurie was adventurous,
loving, fun and always
happy. She was first
and foremost a wife and
mother, even as she spent
many years managing a
fabric store, later working
at Wrigleys, and finally

a great friendship with
Coy and Naomie Skaggs
whose lives she blessed
immeasurably. Throughout
her long and enjoyable life
Laurie engaged in many
interests such as camping,
traveling and playing cards
with family and friends. The
love Laurie shared with
her family, friends and all
who knew her was sincere
and unmatched, as was
her love for her Heavenly
Father. She is survived
by daughters Caryl
Roark (Joe) and Jeanne
Buffington Coates (Bill) and
her son Richard Spiess, as
well as five grandchildren:
Deuce Roark (Jennifer),
Rhett Roark (Amy), Corrie
Buffington Samples
(Jason), Anna Kathryn
Buffington Ellzey (Chris)
and A. J.Spiess (Corie).
She was also the proud
great-grandmother of nine
children: In addition, the
Spiesses hold a special
and honored place for
Michael Evans who is,
for all of them, part of the
family. Special thanks from
the family to the caregivers
who loved her caringly over
the last year of her life.
Laurie was a longtime
member of the St. Paul

December 16, 2022
Marie Webb Faulkner
went to be with her Lord
on December 16, 2022
following an extended
illness. Marie was born
August 18, 1943 in New
Holland, Georgia, the
daughter of John Arthur
Webb (Dutch) and Estelle
Jenkins Webb. She
attended New Holland
Elementary School and is
a 1961 graduate of East
Hall High School. She
later attended Brenau
University graduating in
1966 with a degree in
Physical Education. She
later received a Master
of Education from North
Georgia College.
On November 23, 1964,
she married her high
school sweetheart, Jimmy
Faulkner who she had
dated for the past five
years. In October of 1964,
Jimmy began a career in
Banking in Gainesville,
Georgia and Marie began
her career coaching
Basketball, while still a
college student. In 1967,
she became the heads
girls’ basketball coach at
North Hall High School.
At that time, she was one
of only two women in
North Georgia to hold that
position. She remained
in that position until May
1981. During her tenure,
her teams became very
successful and known
throughout the area. In
1970, her North Hall girls
made their first appearance
in school history in the
state tournament in Macon,
Georgia. During her 14
years of coaching, North
Hall Lady Trojans had very
successful teams winning
the annual Lanierland
Tournament three times
as well as numerous sub-
region Championships.
In 1981, Marie became
the Lumpkin County High
school girls’ basketball
coach where over the next
two years, she turned the
Lady Indians into a very
competitive team. After
seven years absent from
varsity basketball, she
returned as an assistant
coach of the Lumpkin
County Indians Boys team
for several more years.
From the time Marie was
a teenager until the early
2000s, she used her
musical talent to honor
her Lord Jesus Christ as
a pianist and organist
at West Gainesville
Methodist Church and
Riverbend Baptist Church
in Gainesville, Georgia. In
1980, Marie and Jimmy
along with their daughter
Melissa and son Chris
moved to Dahlonega,
Georgia where Marie
continued with her musical
talents as the organist
at Dahlonega Baptist
Church. Marie always had
a heart for serving others,
especially children. She
put her talents and gifts
to work when she and
a group ladies founded
the Sonshine Weekday
Preschool Ministry at
Dahlonega Baptist Church.
That ministry continues
today and is blessed to
currently serve 50
children each year ages
6 months to 5 years in a
Christian environment.
In 2013, Marie was the
inspiration and motivation
behind Jimmy and many
other dedicated individuals
in Dahlonega and Lumpkin
County as they worked
to establish “Jerimiah’s
Place”; a ministry providing
transitional housing for
homeless families in
Lumpkin County. The
ministry continues to
thrive today and has
served more than 200
families in providing them
temporary housing as well
as instruction in multiple
life skills in the areas of
religion, parenting, finance,
education, and generally
how to live a better life.
In addition to her parents,
Marie is preceded in
death by her in-laws Hugh
and Frances Faulkner,
