We have uot, by far, heard the
last of war claims being filed as a
consequence of the war with Spain.
It is announced that French
-Ci&i«is aggregating more than SB,-
000,000 will be shortly placed tip
on the records, and that the Eng
lish and German claims will con
siderably exceed that amount.
These claims cover damages al
leged to have been suffered bv the
sebjects of the countries named,
in Cuba and the Philippine
Islands. Our expenses incurred
because of the friendly interest of
Congress in the Cubans, therefore,
seems quite likely to mount up in
to the hundreds of millions of dol

Mrs. John Butts, of near Clarks
ville, committed suicide Saturday
morning. On Saturday she pre
pared breakfast for the family,and
after her husband went to work
cleaned up the house, and then
told the children she was going
down to the field to gather weeds
for the hogs. When her husband
returned at noon the children told
him where she said she was going.
He went to the field, but not find
ing her went to the homes of sev
eral of his neighbors looking for
her. Not finding her there, he
continued the search, and a little
distance from the house found her,
with a rope around her neck, hang
ing to a tree, dead. It looked as
if she had climed the tree, tied the
rope to a limb and with the other
end around her neck jumped off
and broke her neck. Dr. Burns,
who has been treating herforsome
time, says that she has been des
pondent and he has feared the loss
of her mind. No other reason can
be given for the rash act, as it is
said by neighbors that her home
relations were pleasant and appa
rently happy. Coroner Phillips
held an inquest, and the jury re
turned a verdict of death by her
own hands.
