WIIY you should insure in the “OLD RELIABLE” MANHATTAN LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY of New York. HENRY B. STOKES, President. First —It Is An Old Company. Other things being equal, an old companp is to be pre ferred, as it has had a chance to prove itself and make a record by which it can be judged. “The Old Manhattan” has made its record, to which today it points with pride. Second —It Is A Clean Company. In the fifty years of its existence, no breach of scandal has been directed towards it; no questionable practices have been entered into by its management, and no examination of its books or accounts has shown cause for criticism. Third—lt Is A J ust Company. We judge a company as we do a man. What are its morals? When other companies deserted the Southern Policy-holder, and used both the money he had contributed towards their success, and their influence to destroy him, the Manhattan stayed firm as a rock—“ Justice” was their motto. See what a distinguished statesman of Georgia says: STATE OF GEORGIA, Treasury Department. Atlanta Ga., May 12, 1891. Why Mr. Hardeman had a policy in the Manhattan Life. Maj. Jos. H. Morgan, Special Agent, Atlanta, Ga. Dear Sir: As agent of the Manhattan Life Insrance Company of New York, it affords me pleasure to say to you that my father was in-4 sured in your company, and by reason of the late war, he was unable to reach your com) any and pay his premiums as they fell due; and that after the cessation of hostilities, my father having died during the war, your company has paid to my mother the amount of his policy less the amount of premium unpaid. Yours truly, (Signed) R. U. Hardeman, State Treasurer AXD THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED CASE BY ANY MEANS. For further information address W. F. BAKER, Agent, Atlanta, Ga. j THE NEWS-HERALD. GODDESS. IS IT RIGHT FOR an editor to recommend PATENT MEDICINES ? From Sy|van Valley News, Brevrad. N. C. ‘‘lt may be a question whether the editor of a newspaper has the right to publicly recommend any of the various proprietary medi cines which flood the market, yet as a preveutitive of suffering we feel it a duty to say a good word for Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. We have known and used this medicine in our family for twenty years and have always found it reliable In many cases a dose of this remedy would save hours of suffering while u physician is awaited. We do not believe in depending implicit ly on any medicine for a cure, but we do believe that if a bottle of Chamberlain’s Diarrhoea Remedy was kept on hand and adminis tered at the inception of an attack much suffering might be avoided, and in very many cases the pres ence of a physician would not be required. At least this has been our experience during the past twenty years.” For sale by Bag well Drug Co A lawyer is the only man who ever comes out ahead in opposing a woman’s will. Cure Cold In Head. Kermott's Chocolates Laxative Quinine, easy i to take and quick to cure cold in head and »ore throat. LAWRENCEVILLE, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, JULY I!). UK HI. DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL PLATFORM. CONTINUED EROM LAST WEEK, We are proud of the courage and fidelity of the American soldiers and sailors in all our wars;we favor liberal pensions to them and their dependents and we reiterate theposilion taken in the Chicago plat form in 181)6, that the fact of enlistment and service shall be deemed conclusive evidence against disease and disability before enlistment. IMMEDIATE CONSTRUCTION OF NICARAGUA CANAL We favor the immediate construction, ownership and control of the Nicaragua canal by the United States, and we denounce the insincerity ot the plank in the national republican platform for an Isthmian canal, in the face of the failure of the republican majority to pass the bill pending in congress. We condemn the Hay-Paun cefote treaty a 9 h surrender of American rights and interests not to be tolerated by the American people We denounce the failure of the-republicau party to carry out its pledges, to grant statehoods to the territories of Arizona, New Mexico and Oklohoma, and we promise the people of those territories immedi ate statehood and home rule during their condition as territories and we favor home rule and territorial form of government for Alaska and Portoßico. We favor an intelligent system of improving the arid lands of the west, restoring the waters for purpose of irrigation and the holding of such lauds for actual settlers. We favor the continuance and strict enforcement of the Chinese ex clusion law and its application to the same classes of all Asiatic races. SYMPATHY FOR THE STRUGGLING BOERS Jefferson said: ‘Peace, commerce and honest friendship with natiom entangling alliances with no one. We approve this wholesome doctine and earnestly protest against the republican departure which has in volved us in so-called politics, including the diplomacy ofEurope and the intrigue and laud grabbing of Asia and we especially condemn the ill-concealed republican alliance with England, which must mean dis crimination against other friendly nations and which has already stilled the nation’s voice, while liberty is being stangled iu Africa. Believing in the principles of self-govornment and rejecting, as did our forefathers, the claim of monarchy, we view with iudignation the purpose of England to overwhelm with force the South African republics. Speaking, as we do, for the entire Amorican nation, except its repulican office holders and fc r all free men every where, we extend our sympathies to the heroic burghers in their unequal struggle to maintain their, liberty and independence. REPUBLICAN EXTRAVAGANCE DENOUNCED. We denounce the lavish appropriations of recent republican con gresses, which have kept taxes high and which threaten the perpetua tion of oppressive war levies. We oppose the accumulation of a surplus to be squandered in such barefaced frauds upon the tax payers as the shipping subsidy bill, which, under the false pretence of prospering American shipbuilding would put unearned millions into the pockets of favorite contributors to the republican campaign fund. We favor reduction and speedy repeal of the war taxes and a return to the time honored democratic policy of Btrict economy in govenneutal expendi tures. Believing that our most cheerished institutions are in great, peril, that the V6ry exsitence of our constitutional republic is at stake and the decision to be rendered will determine whether or not our children are are to enjoy those blessed prvileges of free government which have made United States great, prosperous and honored, we earnestly ask for the foregoing declaration of principle, the hearty support of the liberty loving people, regardless of previous party affiliation.” PREVENTED A TRAIEDY. He carried mud between his toes and freckles on bis nose, and his heart was full of dreams and his head full of schemes and his poc ket full of strings and slings and other things. His Lilly goat and his dog were his daily companions, and he roamed over the hill and yelled because lie had ayellorand whoop ed because he had a whooper. At home he was the autocrat at the breakfast table and the supper table; at school he was the demo crat of the playgrounds and the republican of th e lunch basket—he wanted everything in sight. He abhorred the hath tub and the bibiti, and was the sworn enemy of castor oil and civilization. He was everlastingly under indictment for high crimes and misdemeanors, and attempted to prove an alibi. Hiß father tried him, convicted him for dodging the truth one day, and turned to him with a frown and said: “My son, don’t you go t-'Sunday school?” “Ye*.” “Don’t ( you study the bible there?” “Yes.” “Well, can yon tell me what it says i THE GREATEST EVENT OF THE SEASON, News-Herald N Journal, w Xt Y j Only sl-25.
