Rural Mail in Sight.
Last week the News-Herald call
ed attention to the establishment
of rural mail routes throughout
the county, and expressed the be
lief that great good would result
to the county iu having this sys
tem of mail put in operation. It
seems that a great many people
never heard of the idea before,
and this fact itself shows that
better mail facilities are needed.
But once the matter is explained
and the people see the benefits de
rived, they become enthusiastic
and exceedingly anxious to have
these routes established. They
see that this plan will enable
them to take daily papers; they
see that the man ten miles in the
country will get his mail as regu
larly as any citizen of Lawrence
ville.
Mr. W. E. Woodruff has al
ready made all preliminary ar
rangements for establishing one
route from Lawrenceville. The
papers have been signed and for
warded to the proper authorities,
and the probability is the route
will be in operation by Christmas.
More than one hundred heads of
families signed the petition. The
route covers a distance of about
tweuty-two miles as follows:
Starting at the post office in Law
renceville, thence north to Bogan
road a distance of two miles,
thence north-east four miles to
Peachtree road, thence south-west
seven miles to Meadow road,
thence two and a half miles to
eld State road, thence seven miles
to Lawrenceville.
Mr. Woodruff, if the route is
established, will travel the route

himself. He will go on schedule
time so that every man will know
what hour to expect his mail.
He will be a traveling post office,
as it were, carrying stamps and
everything needed to accommo
date the public. People living a
short distance from the route can
put up boxes and thus receive the
same benefits as the man who has
his mail delivered at his door.
Should this route be established,
Huff, Jinks, and Meadow post
offices will be discontinued.
Mew Members Initiated.
Last Monday night was an event
ful ou<* in the history of Odd Fel
lowship in this town. By invita
tion of Lawrenceville lodge, Hon.
T, S. Mell, of Athens, Ga., the
grand master of the order in this
state, was present and during the
evening made one of the most in
teresting and instructive address
es on the origin, growth, and his
tory of the order ever delivered to
the membership of this communi
ty. This is paying Mr. Mell a
great, yet deserved tribute, as this
lodge has in the past been honored
by the presence of many grand
masters: Hon. R. B. Russell,
Dr. A. C. Ward, Hon. John B.
Goodwin, Mr. Buisse, of Athens,
Mr. J.G. Bloodworth, of Atlanta,
present grand representative of the
order in this state to the sovereign
grand lodge; all past grand mas
ters have been with this lodge.
One of its own members, C. H.
Brand, himself being a past grand
master.
At this meeting, besides Grand
Master Mell, Past Grand Master
Bloodworth, J. A, Hynds, present
Grand Marshal; J. D, Deihl, of
|JOHN B. BROGDON

CHILDREN’S

Atlanta, J. K. Kenney, of Athens,
were present and assisted in initi
ating and conferring the degrees
upon the following applicants:
C. C. Wall, R. L. Robinson, G.
W. Clower, J. D. Rutledge, 0. A.
Nix, J. A. Bagwell, James Davis,
R. L. Keheley, W. H. Roberts,
F. B. Morgan, J. A. Smith, James
Keheley, R.L, McKelvey and Rev.,
James Wood Pogue.
The new members express them
selves as well pleased with the
work, and all feel much increased:-
interest in the order.
The address of Grand Master
Mell showed that the order had
increased since July in this state
over two thousand members, an
unprecedented increase in the his
tory of the order in this state, or
any other order. During his ad
dress he made the statement that
there were at present in the world
in good standing about one million
and sixty thousand members,
which is about one hundred thous
and more members than any other
secret order in existence, though
it is only eighty-one years old.
It is a source of gratification to
all concerned that there is not the
slightest friction existing between
the Masonic fraternity and the
Odd Fellow's of this town; many
belonging to both institutions.
To both we extend the right hand
of fellowship, and bid each God
speed in their respective lines of
work.
