WHITE WEDS BLACK
Mulatto Girl and White Man
Arrested on Serious Charge.
THEY ADMIT BEING MARRIED
Ceremony is Alleged to Have Been Per
formed By a Justice in
Atlanta, Ga.
Charles Johnson, U white man,
and Eleanor Moody, a mulatto
girl, were arrested in Atlanta,
Ga, Thursday morning on charge
of having violated the law hy
getting married.
Johnson admits the charge, and
makes a statement which would
indicate that the man is either
a degenerate or a lunatic.
The woman says she married
the white man because he worried
her so, and that was the only way
to get rid of him.
Johnson and the woman arriv
ed in Atlanta from Rome. They
went at once to the court house,
where the man secured a marriage
license. In a cab they drove to
the residences of two ministers,
both of whom refused to perform
any such unlawful ceremony.
The couple finally went to the
office of Justice Cook, so they
stated, and were married. John
son shows a marriage certificate
issued with Justic Cook’s signature
to it, and the name of J. M. Mc-
Afee as a witness. It is presumed
that Justice Cook, if he performed
the ceremony, supposed Johnson to
be a man witli negro blood in his
veins.
After the marriage the couple
jode to the depot in a cab, and it
tfas there that the officers got wind
of the affair and arrested them.
Johnson ’s home is in Rome, Ga.,
and he is said to belong to one of
the best families in that city-
He has traveled a great deal, and
is a stock trader by trade. His
last business venture in Rome was
a skating rink.
Johnson is about thirty years of
ago and the woman about twenty.
To a reporter of the Constitution
the man stated that he married
the mulatto girl because he loved
her, and it was nobody’s business.
He said he intended to take her to
Cuba, where such marriages are
not socially barred. He claims
not to have known that he had
violated the law of Georgia.
The woman says she told John
son that he was getting into
trouble, but he vowed that no
trouble would come.
Johuson seut for a reporter and
handed him a manuscript which
he said was a sketch of his life
which he wanted published. It
was a lot of allusions to his love
for the negro race, which were un
fit for publication.

Two Elberton young men made
the following trade between them
selves the other day while stand

reached her hand back to see if
her skirt was gapping, or had
slipped below her belt, Mr. H.
was to give Mr. B. five cents, and
for every one that didn’t, Mr. B.
was to give Mr. H. ten centß. At
the expiration of the half hour,
Mr, B. had sixty-five cents and
Mr. H. ten cents; as one lady
came along leading a child with

you think of this for a business

The Constitution wants good
agents everywhere. Men who will
gut out and canvass and hustle
for new business. Many who
have to go over their own and ad
joining couuties on business can
take The Constitution along as
the best side line. Country doc
tors, tax collectors, rural route
mail carriers, nursery men, farm
ers and good workmen, could all
realize among these prizes and
make their commission besides.
A fair salary proposition for any
man.
Every man should take his
county newspaper before auythiug
else, and next to this he should
take a good general newspaper,
such as The Constitution. His
couuty paper gives him the local
home news, which is not supplied
by a newspaper furnishing the
general news from all parts of the
country and from all over the
world. Before a man seeks infor
mation from outside, he should
first feel sure that he is beiug kept
posted on what is going on at
home. When, however, the op
portunity is offered to get the best
weekly newspaper in this country
with your home paper, the in
ducement is such as to elicit
prompt response from our readers.
We will be glad to receive club
bing subscriptions with the News-
Herald and The Constitution, and
if there are auy who are now sub
scribers to this paper, who wish
to take The Constitution also, we
will be glad to receive subscrip
tions to the latter and forward
them, having authority from that
paper to do so.
The Constitution should be iu

TO SELL FOR REINVESTMENT.
GEORGIA, Franklin County.—After four
weeks 1 notice, pursuant to section 2548 of
the civil code, a petition, of which a true and
correct copy is subjoined, will be presented to
the Hon. It, B. Russell, judge of the superior
court of the Western circuit, at his office in
Winder, Jackson county, Ga., on the 14th day of
January, 1901. S. A. JONES.
GEORGIA. Frauklin uounty.—To the Hon.
R. B. Russell, judge of the superior court of
said county: The petition of S. A. Jones shows
L That she is the guardian of Willie Jones,
aged fifteen years, and Charlie Jones, aged
twelve years, of said county, heretofore duly
appointed and qualified as such.
2. That she desires to sell for reinvestment
at private sale the following property, the same
being a part of the estate of her said wards, to
wit: A tract of land lyinir and being in Gwin
nett county, Georgia, on the road leading from
Lawrenceville to Gainesville, adjoining lands
of Sol Corban on the north, James Patterson
on the east, Will McGee on the south and L.
Bennett on the west; containing thirty-six
acres more or lees.
8. That she realizes from said land about
$85.00 per annum for rent,
4. Petitioner desires to reinvest the pro
ceeds of such sale in a certain house and lot
in the town of Lavonia, in Franklin county,
Georgia, adjoining lots of W. » Morgan on the
south. John Mitchell on the north, W. S. Mor
gan on the east, Vickery street on the west,
and containing one acre more or less which
lot is well improved, having upon it a good
comfortable dwelling and necessary out build
ings, is located on one of the main streets in
said town and rents now for sls 00 per month,
with prospects of an increase.
5. The reasons for making said application
are, that the tract sought to be sold, lies iu an
other county from petitioner's residence, is a
small tract, from which she realizes very little
income and is Inconvenient and expensive for
her to look after and keep up, while the house
and lpt in which she proposes to reinvest Is in
a growing town on the Elberton Air Line rail
road, where property is increasing in value, is
convenient to her and where she will be at no
expense in looking after same, and from which
she can soon realize twice as much income per
annum for her said wards, with prospects of
increasing same.
6. Petitioner shows that notice of her inten
tion to make this application has been publish- /
ed once a week for four weeks as required by
law. Wherefore she pravs an order authoriz
ing said sale and reinvestment.
