gain in northern states 20.
It is a noteworthy fr\ct that
North Carolina and Louisiana,
states whose representation rabid
republicans desired to cut, have
gaiued one congressman each.
A long walk is a severe trial for
the human understanding.
Senator Clay stands as firm as
the rocks of Gibraltar between the

Perhaps President McKinley is
having the grip just to prove that
he is still in touch with the mass

bugaboo.

That Eo> in the Face.
You remember what St. James
says about “The Tongue,” the un
bridled tongue. Well, the other
day, I read a long article on “the
home of the tongue,” written by
a fellow-devil who had undoubted
ly read what James said (and you
know, it ain’t every editor who
has read the Bible). From that
article, I learn that the mouth is
situated right square in the front
of the face, and is the aperture to
the cold storage room of your
anatomy, through which occasion
| ally an editor’s peas and rice, corn
j bread and bacon rinds shoot the
slnites. Some mouths look like
peaches and cream and some
look like a hole chopped in the
side of a brick wall to admit a
door or window. The mouth -is
a hot bed for toothaches, and a
bunghole for oratory and a baby’s
crown glory. It is the crimson
aisle to blowing out the lamp.
It is patriotism's fountain head
and the tool chest for pie. With
out it politicians would b)
wanderers on the face of the earth
a id the cornetist and the chorus
girl would go down to unhonored
graves. It is the grocer’s friend,
the orator’s pride and the dentist’s
hope. It puts some men on the
stone pile. It is the temptation’s
lunch counter when attached to
a man. Without it a married life
would be a perpetual summer
dream and the dude would loose
half of his attractions. If there
were no mouths there would be no
happy greetings and no goodbys:
no words of comfort or hope, and
no dirty slanders and malicious
back-biting.
It is a disgusting organ that
should he smashed when stuck
into other people’s ufTairs, and a
delicious rosebud that should be
kissed when stuck under a pretty
girl’s nose.
I could go on forever paraphas
ing but will not weary you. But
above all things, the mouth is a
hole through which the pesky deliu
quent does nothing but lie, and an
aching void that a country editor
rarely fills —Dalton Argus.
Davis— Stevens.
On January 18th, at the resi
dence of Esquire E. L. Anderson,
occurred the marriage of Mr. Cic
ero T Davis and Miss Camelia
Stevens, Esquire Anderson offici
ating.
Miss Stevens is an amiable and
accomplished young lady of Litho
nia, and has many friends through
out the country.
Mr. Davis is a popular and en
ergetic young farmer of Gwinnett.
We wish for them a long, pros
perous and happy life.
The recollection of bygone days
causes the editor of an exchange
to deliver himself of the following:
“Your first sweetheart! Though
the memory comes to you liKe a
phantom of the past, you can all
recall the sentiments that first pos
! sessed your hearts for the being
that is classified as ‘my first sweet
heart.’ The recollection may come
in the shape of a golden-haired vis
! ion of white musline and blue rib
bous or of a grimy-fisted, sturdy
specimen of the genus ‘small boy.’
j but in either case it comes with the
wistful interest that is always felt
for a past that has been happy.
The memory is like breathing the
scent of a dead flower. There are
a few too great to outgrow it, and
i few are too burdened with worldly
cares to forget it. It is simply
the awakening of that element of
human iuterest which we call sen
i tirneut.”
