THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
&ONG OF THK HOLLAR.
I am e lovely dollar.
You km w it is a fact.
I've a woman on my bosom.
An t asrle on my back.
I was born la Washington,
A thousand miles away,
Uncle you know, is my daddy,
I have no lime for play.
I have millions more of brothers
The very imps of me.
Some are in this eountry.
And some across the sea.
I do most any kind of work,
For I'm not hard to please.
Sometimes I get with a stingy man
And suffer a little squeeze,
I am always on the run, you see.
I seldom take a rest
Except its when the miser
Has locked me in his desk.
I helped those people in China
To quit their ways of sin.
But preaching there just made them worse,
1 helped to shoot it in.
I went to Cuba some time ago
( To set the Datives free.
So when I got the Spaniards out
Dad said ‘‘it’s all for me. ”
The next was the Philippine islands,
On that distant shore,
Uncle Sam said "‘hold all you’ve got.
And still reach out for more.”
I am never idle, so you see.
My mission’s hard to fill,
I help to rnn the factory,
I help to turn the mill.
I help to buy the license
For man to get a wife,
Sometimes I turn the whetstone
To sharpen the murderer's knife,
► I help the people all around
To buy their daily bread,
I help the undertakers
To bury all the dead.
There’s many other things 1 do
But time will not permit.
For fear I sing myself to death,
I guess I had better quit.
—J. D. Whalit.
Pepsin preparations often fail to
relieve indigestion because they
can digest only albuminus foods.
There is one preparation that di
gests all classes of food, and that
is Kodol Dyspepsia Cure. It cures
the worst cases of indigestion and
gives instant relief, for it digests

Let Not the Murderer Escape.
The last year of the century, ac
cording to that tireless gatherer of
criminal statistics, the Chicago
Tribune, showed a great increase
over the previous year iu many
forms of crime. The number of
murders for instance, rose from
6,755 to 8,275, and the number of
suicides from 5,840 to 6,755. Nev
ertheless in a country where there
were’8 5 275 murders, there were
only 119 hangings, 80 of which
were in the south and 89 in the
north, 60 of the executed being
while, 58 being black and 1 a Chi
naman. Thus it will be seen that
the law visited death upon only
one out of every 68 murderers for
the year.
This weakness on the part of
the courts in allowing such an
amazing number to escape their
just deserts partly accounts for the
115 irregular executions or lynch
ing during the same year. It is
frequently stated and commonly
supposed that the lynching evil is
on the increase, but the Tribune’s
table showiug the lynching record
for sixteen years, we are glad to
see, indicates the contrary. It is
as follows:
1885 184
1886 138
1887 122
1888 142
1889 176
1890 127
1891 192
1892 235
1893 200
1894 190
1895 171
1896 .131
1897 166
1898 127
1899 107
1900..... 115
According to the Tribune, 107
out of the 116 lyuchings during
1900 occurred in the southern
states, while 8 occurred in the
northern or western states. Of
the lynched 107 were negroes aud
9 were whites. Those lynched in
the uorth were not all white, how
ever, for three negroes were thus
executed in Indiana in December
and the Colorado burning of a
voung negro is still fresh iu the
public mind.- The alleged crimes
fur which the 115 were lynched are
given as follows: Murder 39,
rape 19, attempted rape 18. race
prejudice 10, a-saulting whites 6,
threats to kill 5, burglary 4, at
tempt to murder 4, informing 2,
robbery 2, suspicion of murder 2,
complicity in murder 2, unknown
offenses 2, suspicion of robbery 1,
no offense l t arson 2, suspicion of
arson 1, aiding escape of a mur
derer 1.
The criminal record for 1900,;
while it shows pressing need of;
measures to check lyuchings,shows
we think still more pressing need
of means to procure the death pen
alty for a larger number of niur- j
derers. Only one out of every 69 1
murderers was hanged during 1900
and for every man lynched 70
murderers escaped. —Macou Tele

Tesla Line to Mars.
Nikola Tesla is busy at work oh
a transmitter and a receiver that
he believes will establish as an ac
complished fact communication
between this planet and Mars.
When a reporter saw him in his
laboratory he was drawing on a
paper zigzag lines that looked like
the teeth of an old style up-and
down mill saw.
“1 am preparing,” he said, “for
the greatest experiment that has
ever been made on this planet.
Sooner or later I shall establish
communication with Mars. lam
certain that the inhabitants of
that planet have many times en
deavored to signal this earth, but
we have never had instruments of
sufficient delicacy to receive their
messages nor instruments power
ful enough to answer them At
last we have the former, and 1 will
soon have the latter. It will re
main then only to decipher their
messages and answer th«m.
