ADYICE TO TEACHERS
How to Prepare for Coining
Examination.
MUST MASTER MATHEMATICS
Tbe County School Commissioner Indulges
in Plain Practical Talk to Teach
*
ers and Citizens.
Trusting that my ideas in re
gard to preparing for an examina
tion may be of gome help to teach
ers, I have decided to write a few
articles in the News-Herald upon
the several branches of study from
which the examination questions
are taken.
Inasmuch as arithmetic is the
most difficult part of the exami
nation, and more teachers fail in
arithmetic than in any other
branch of study, 1 will discuss
this subject in this, my first
article.
The great trouble with many
teachers in solving the problems
in the present state school com
missioner’s examinations is caused
from the exclusive use of Sanford’s
arithmetics in this county. I was
a member of the last class that
the distinguished Dr. Sanford
taught, and I reverence him as
highly as any man that I have
ever known, hut I consider his
high school arithmetic inadequate,
misleading and “behind the
times.” The teachers who had
studied only Sanford’s arithmetics
are the ones that made such poor
marks in arithmetic in the last
examination. On the other hand,
the teachers who had used Went
worth’s, Mille’s and the other
more difficult arithmetics made
good marks in mathematics.
But directly to the purposes of
this article. To prepare for an
arithmetic examination the teach
er should begin study at the be
ginning of any good arithmetic.
Let him be sure that he can intel
ligently define arithmetic, num
bers, notation, numeration, ab
stract and concrete numbers, and
all the other important questions
that might be asked before addi
tion is reaohed. In studying the
four fundamental principles of
arithmetic, learn the definition of
each, how many terms and how
used, etc. Between long division
and fractions there is a very inter
esting part of arithmetic which
many teachers carelessly study or
omit entirely. “What is an odd
number, prime number, least
common multiple and greatest
common measure ?” are some of
the questions that are sometime
asked in the examinations. In
common fractious all teachers can
add, subtract, multiply and di
vide, but some few are sometimes
unable to tell what the denomina
tor, numerator, proper, improper,
compound and complex fractions
are. There is no excuse for a
teacher failing to answer such
questions as these. Decimal frac
tious are simple, yet there are
many teachers who do not thor
oughly understand them. To keep
the decimal point in its place is
not an easy thing for all teachers
to do. The teacher should learn
thoroughly all the tables in com
pound quantities and the explana
tions under each table. In long
measure the definition of a barley
corn, span, furlong, chain, link, a
knot, fathom, etc., should be
learned. Square measure is thor
oughly practical, and every teach
er ought to make himself profi
cient in calculating laud, and iu
carpeting, papering, plastering
and iu all surface measure. In
findiug the number of yards of
carpet or the number of rolls of
for a room Sanford’s arith
metic is misleading, and there are
many teachers in the county that
cannot solve problems of this
kind. There are problems in
square measure in nearly every
one of Mr. Glenn’s examinations.
In cubic measure the teacher ought
to know how to tell how many
cords ii. any pile of wood, the
number of brick in any chimney,
wall or house, the bushels or gal
lons in any box or room. The
difference in dimension between a
gallon of corn and a gallon of
syrup is a question that Sanford
does not fully elucidate. How
much larger is the miller's gallon
measure than that of the mer
chant ? Let the teacher remem
ber that unless he remembers the
cubic inches in a gallon or a bush
el he ean’t solve many examples
in cubic, dry and liquid measure.
In studying the units of weight,
the number of grains in a pound
of avoirdupois must be remem
bered or else the difference in
weight between ten pounds of
salt and ten pounds of gold can
not be told. Too much time is
not likely to be put upon the
tables and their use under the
head of the units of weight. The
teacher must be able to put the
other tables to a practical use.
Longitude and time is a subject
that must not be overlooked. A
clear understanding of the rela
tion between time and degrees,
miuutes, etc., will enable any one
to solve all the examples that
come under this division.
Percentage is very much like
decimal fractions, and the im
portant thing is to keep the deci
mal point in its place. Let it be
remembered that the denominator
id percentage is generally 100.
Profit and loss, interest, commis*
sion, insurance, taxes, duties, dis
count should be thoroughly mas
tered. The different ways of se
curing money from a bank should
be understood. To explain: If
A wants SIOO today, due two
months after date at 12%, for
how much must he give his note;
or if he gives his note for SIOO,
due two mouths after date at 12%,
how much does he get today ?
Also the way a bank discounts
notes should be learned. Many
teachers are apt to give too little
attention to proportion. Iu my
humble judgment it is one of the
most importaut parts of arithme
tic. There are many old citizens
SORES AMD
ULCERS .
Sores and Ulcers never become chronic
unless the blood is iu poor condition is
sluggish, weak and unable to throw off
the poisons that accumulate in it. The
system must be relieved of the unhealthy
matter through the sore, and great danger
to life would follow should it heal before
the blood has been made pure and healthy
and all impurities eliminated from the sys
tem. S.S.S. begins the cure by first cleans
ing and invigorating the blood, building
up the general health and removing from
the system A CONSTANT DRAM
UPON THE SYSTEM.
When this has been accomplished the dis
charge gradually ceases, and the sore or
ulcer heals. It is the tendency of these old
indolent sores to grow worse and worse,
and eventually to destroy the bones. Local
applications, while soothing and to some
extent alleviate pain, cannot reach the seat
of the trouble. S. S. S. does, and no matter
how apparently hopeless your condition,
even though your constitution has broken
down, it will bring relief when nothing
else can. It supplies the rich, pure blood
necessary to heal the sore and nourish
the debilitated, diseased body.
Mr. J. B. Talbert, Lock Box 245,Winona, Miss.,
says: “Six years ago my leg from the knee to
the foot was one solid sore. Several physicians
treated me and I made two trips to Hot Springs,
but found no relief. I was induced to try S. S. S ,
and it made a complete cure. 1 have been a per
fectly well man ever since."
is the only purely veg-
etable blood purifier
known—contains no
poisonous minerals to
ruin the digestion and
add to, rather than relieve your suffer
ings. If your flesh does not heal readily
when scratched, bruised or cut, your blood
is in bad condition, and any ordinary sore
is apt to become chronic.

in this county who, on account of
the oivii war, never went to school
more than sixty days, yet they
can solve most iny practical ex
ample on this great principle of
proportion.
Powers aud roots and mensura
tion are important topics of arith
metic, and there isn’t any reason
why any teacher should be excused
for not being able to solve any
problem that is found in any of
the arithmetics.
In an article of this kind it is
impossible to embrace the whole
subject or to elucidate all the
suggestions, yet I hope that what
I have said will be enough to
arouse the teachers of this county
to a souse of what it takes to sat
isfactorily meet the requisites in
in examination in arithmetic.
In conclusion allow me to say
that while I am county school
commissioner of this county I
shall give the best of my ability
and talent to the efficiency of the
country schools. Not that I dis
parage our town schools, but in
the towns in this county, with
few exceptions, the children are
blessed with good .school houses,
well furnished, aud good teachers.
The country children are entitled
to the same advantages that town
children possess, aud I appeal to
every loyal citizen of this grand
old county to use his utmost en
deavors to secure a good Bchool
house and a good teacher for
every child in our county.
In my next article I will discuss

Pneumonia Can Be Prevented.
This disease always results from a
cold or an attack of the grip
and may be prevented* by the
timely use of Chamberlain’s
Cough Remedy. That remedy was
extensively used during the
epidemics of LaGrippe of the past
few years, aDd not a single case
has ever been reported that did not
recover or that resulted in
pneumonia, which shows it to be a
certain preventive of that
dangerous disease. Chamberlain’s

Most newspapers are familiar
with the man w'ho “takes more pa-,
pers than he can read,” and con
sequently has no use for his local
paper. Ha takes a paper pub
lished in Maine, which contains
all the news about “The Smug
gler’s Last Cruise,” “The Bandit
King,” “Big Mose in Dead Gulch,”
etc. While he is storing his mind
with such valuable (?) informa
tion, his wife is reading an almau
ac. But that man gets into trou
ble and he loses no time iu rush
ing to his local paper to get him
out. If a relative dies he wants a
column obituary. If his daughter
marries he insists on having a col
umn write-up of the great event;
yet he “takes so many papers”
that he could not subscribe for
his local sheet. This is the man
who always wants a fifteen-line
pull, just to fill up, you kuow.
The community iu which such a
man lives is to be pitied.
