WHAT METHODISM IS
Great Work of John Wesley
Ably Discussed.
HAD MANY CO-LABORERS
“Robe Snipe” Shows Our Readers the
Difference in Methodism of Today
and Long Ago.
In 1729 two young men, Charles
and John Wesley, in England,
reading the Bible, saw they could
not be saved without holiness ; fol
lowed after it, and incited others
so to do. In 1737 they saw like
wise that men are justified before
they are sanctified; but still holi
ness was their object. God then
thrust them out to raise a holy
people, etc. The word “Metho
dist” was given Mr. Wesley by hie
enemies on recount of his precis
ion. He was systematical in all
the avocations of life. Therefore,
he wescalled a “Methodist.” Now,
it is not neoessary for me to tell
about Mr Wesley’s greatness, for
it is admitted by all that he was a
great and good man. My object
in writing this letter is to show, if
possible, the contrast between
Wesleyau Methodism and that of
the present day.
Mr. Wesley, when preaching to
an audience that were not able to
wear shoes, would take oft his boots
and preach barefooted. Realizing
that Christianity brings everybody
down on a common level and holds
them there, I suppose that if Johu
Wesley were to get up *>ut of his
grave today and preach one of his
characteristic sermons to a Meth
odist audience he would be ridi
culed and published all over Amer
ica as one of the greatest religious
fanatics that this country ever
saw. They would say that he
ought to go and join the Salvation
Army. They would not recognize
him as their leader unless he quit
preaching Christianity and went
up to his eyes in theology.
He would have to have his hair
cut, his boots blacked, and get a
fine Prince Albert suit and a stove
pipe hat and a gold-headed walk
ing cane before they would receive
him, Furthermore, he would have
to quit preaching holiness, one of
the fundamental principles of the
Christian religion, “without which
no man can see the Lord. ”
If I were asked what the mat
ter with Methodism today I would
say that a great tide of worldiness
has swept over the church and
almost engulfed the whole. An
other great hindrance is they have
left their first estate; they have
fallen from grace, or rather they
have left off their first principles.
While Mr. Wesley is considered
the founder of Methodism he was
not alone. Rev George Whitfield,
his co-laborer in church work in
Georgia, did some noble work.
The first orphan’s home ever built
in Georgia was built by Mr. Whit
field, about four miles from Sa
vannah; it is called Bethesda, and
is in a flourishing condition. It
stands as a great monument to
his memory. Mr. Whitfield was
one of the greatest orators of his
his day. There were other great
men who came iu later on and
made gallant soldiers of the cross.
Charles Wesley, brother of John,
was one of the greatest religious
poets the world has ever known.
Not only do the Methodists sing
his songs but the Baptists and
other denominations use them to
some extent
I must not omit to speak of an
other good man. That was Dr.
Jesse Boring. He was a Gwinnett
county man, was licensed to preach
in a little old log house which was
used as a church near Sweetwater,
whereßethesda church now stands.
This Godly old saint preached
from the Atlantic to the Pacific
oceans, and died just a few years
ago in DeKalb couuty, adjoin
ing county to Gwinnett, where
he first started from. The first
year of his ministry he received
twenty-one dollars for his work,
and at the end of that year he was
patched from the sole of his feet
to the crown of his head. But
those dear old soldiers of the cross
have gone the way of all the earth.
What about the stock we have on
hand today ? Would they preach
for the pitiful sum of twenty-one
dollars ? No. They would not
pass by a church on the road for
that amount. Jesus said “the poor
have the gospel preached,” but I
know a church in Gwinnett coun
ty that has been abandoned on ac
count of its poverty.

Rheumatism
Rheumatic pains are the cries of protest
and distress from tortured muscles, aching
joints and excited nerves. The blood has
been poisoned by the accumulation of
waste matter in the system, and can no
longer supply the pure and health sustain
ing food they require. The whole system
feels the effect of this acid poison; and
not until the blood has been purified and
brought back to a healthy condition will
the aches and pains cease.
Mrs. James Xell, of 707 Ninth street, N. E,
Washington, D. C , writes as follows: “A few
months aj-o I had an attack of Sciatic Rheum*
tistu in its worst form. The
pain was so intense that I
became completely pros
trated. The attack was an
unusually severe one, and
my condition was regard
ed as being very danger
ous. I was attended by
one of the most able doc
tors in Washington, who is
also a member of the fac
ulty of a leading medical
college here. He told me
to continue his prescrip-
tions and I would get well. After having if filled
twelve times without receiving the slightest
benefit, I declined to continue his treatment ant
longer. Having heard of S. S S.(Swift’s Specific)
recommended for Rheumatism, I decided, almost
in despair however, to give the medicine a trial,
and at ter 1 had taken a lew bottles I was able to
hobble around on crutches, and very soon there
after had no use for them at all. S. S. S. having
cured me sound aud well. All the distressing
pains have left me, my appetite has returned,
and I am happy to be again restored to perfect

Politeness.
There are but few of us who, if
we ask ourselves if we are polite,
will not answer in the affirmative,
and though seeing faults in others,
are h. ath to acknowledge that we
also are faulty.
As we sit iu our rooms at night
reflecting over the events of the
day, how many of us have enough
moral courage to acknowledge that
we have been remiss in many of
these little points of manners, the
observance of which forms the en
tire characteristics of true polite
ness ?
Life is made up of little things,
and startling events and incidents
of great emotion are few and far
between, aud the truth is that we
give too little thought to the small
events and place the standard of
politeness above its proper level,
aud only pay attention to a few of
those cardinal points in our life
that are rare and uncommon.
They who daily diffuse around
them cheerful influences by their
kind offices, genial salutation,
frank and open converse aud
pleasant looks go by unheard and
unnoticed, while the more observ
ing person who studies his or her
position for effect aud choose the
right time onlv for his or her be
nevolence, gains the entire praise
through all his life for his occa
sional generositY. The value of a
thing iu life is enhanced by its
rarity, aud true politeness is a
virtue of uncommon rarity, scoff
at the thought as you may. Grace,
agreeable manners and fascinating
powers are one thing, while po
liteness is another. To be polite
is to have common sense, that is
the fundamental principle, and
upon that axis revolves the other
branches of that virtue.
The polite person must know
where to violate the conventional
forms which common practices
have established and when not to
violate them. Circumstances al
ter cases, and to be a slave to any
■et code of action is as bad as to
despise them. Perception, adapt
iveness, penetration and a happy
faculty of suiting manners to cir
cumstances is one of the princi
ples upon which one must work.
The politeness of the drawing
room differs from that of the of
fice or railroad car, and what may
be downright rudoness in one case
may be gentility in another.
Let us bring our observation of
self down to our own little family
circle. How do we treat our fath
er, mother, sister and brother ?
Are we right to a point in those
little acts of love and tenderness
that seem so great to them, and
help make up their daily life? The
fault is we are not particular in
those small things, and wrongly
imagine that the length of our fa
miliar meetings gives au excuse
for the abrupt termination of our
nice views on the issue,
