THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
ENGLISH GRAMMAR.
Questions Heretofore Asked on
This Branch of Study.
WHY MANY TEACHERS FAIL
A Timely Talk and Some Useful Informa
tion Is Given by the County
School Commissioner.
BY J. A. BAGWELL.
In the state examinations En
glish grammar is difficult to many
teachers. Not so difficult because
the state school commissioner puts
forth extra effort in trying to
make grammar the most trying
part of the examinations but be
cause so little attention is given
to this study in the country
schools. There were 0918 chil
dren that attended the public
school in this county last year,
and only 984 of that number
studied English grammar in either
language lessous or technical
grammar. The teachers, mostly
the country teachers, therefore,
not having much text book work
to do in this brauch of study are
deficient in the use of good lan
guage. Here are some of the sen
tences taken from the last teach
ers’ examination papers: ‘‘the
first is to have to teach the past
present.” ‘‘l will test them in
that study under stand the work
in that.” “the House stands ond
the hill near The church.” ‘‘The
Body Should Be Kept Study and
Even.” Relatibe pronouns refer
to people and others do not.”
“its purpose was to guartee to the
American people life liberty and
the pursuit of hapiuess.”
Of course, the teachers in whose
paper the above sentences are
found failed to make grades en
titling them to license. Such
teachers will fail again next June,
and justly ought to fail. In
grading the next examination
papers I do not intend to grade
the papers in which the sentences
begin with small letters and do
not close with periods. Let all
who wish to become teachers un
derstand that they must, at least,
show this proficiency before their
examination papers are entitled
to any consideration.
All the questions in grammar
used by the preseut state school
commissioner are given below*.
Those who anticipate standing the
next examination will do well to
study them. They are practical
questions and any one that is able
to answer them satisfactorily
knows something about English
grammar, and therefore will not
make an absolute failure in this
branch of study.

Contagious
Blood Poison
There is no poison so highly contagious,

too sure you are cured because all externa]
signs of the disease have disappeared, and

some disease, for no other poison is so
surely transmitted from parent to child
as this. Often a bad case of Rheumatism,
Catarrh, Scrofula or severe skin disease,
an old sore or ulcer developing in middle
life, can be traced to blood poison con
life, for it remains smoldering in the sys
tem forever, unless properly treated and
driven out in the beginning. S. S. S. is
the only antidote for this peculiar virus,
the only remedy known that can over
come it and drive it out of the blood, and
it does this so thoroughly and effectually
that there is never a return of the disease
to embarrass or humiliate you afterwards.

Murder and Suicide.
Atlanta, Feb. 18.—The dead
bodies of Mrs. H. M. Wilson, a
young widow, and William Ham
ilton, a student in pharmacy, who
disappeared from Atlanta one
week ago today, were found last
night, one mile from the end of
the Chattahoochee river car line.
The surroundiugs indicated that'
Hamilton had killed Mrs, Wilson,
set fire to the woods near her
her body, and then ended his own
life. Both bodies were fearfully
burned and rested upon breast
works thrown up by the confed
erates to stem the advance of the
federal army on Atlanta in the
war between the states. The bod
ies were found by,two [megroes,
who, being unable to impress any
body with the truth of their state
ments last night, did not press the
matter further until today.
Mrs. Wilson was lying by the
aide of a fallen sapling. There
was a bullet hole through her
right hand and another in the
right temple. The left foot was
burned entirely off, the flames had
destroyed her hair, and her left
hand was incinerated, save one
finger, which bore a wedding ring.
By the side of Hamilton was
found a revolver and an empty
cigarette box. There was a hole
in Hamilton’s left temple and a
few inches from his left hand lay
a small mirror, evidently used to
direct the bullet.
When Mrs. Wilson left her mo
ther’s home, one week ago, ehe
wore only a morning gown of light
material, and a lightweight dress
ing sacque. She was without a
hat and her feet were incased in
slippers.
Hamilton came to Atlanta from
Mobile. His tuition at a college i
here has been paid by Mrs H.
M. Goodman of that city, accord
ing to a recent letter to Mrs.
Wilson.
It is known that Hamilton has
been devoted to Mrs. Wilson for
some time, but her parents assert
