THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
Big Beal on Foot.
Pittsburg, February 15 —It was
learned this afternoon from a reli
able source that the deal with An
drew Carnegie will be closed today
by the payment to Mr. Carnegie
of $22,500,000 in cash. The mi
nority stockholders will be paid in
stock in the new company, receiv
ing 150 per cent each of the com
mon and preferred shares. The
same authority says the officials
of the other companies have sub
mitted financial statements and
the syndicate will determine from
these the basis upon which they
will be taken into the great com
bine. If the statements are ac
ceptable, the stockholders will be
given certificates in the new com
pany in exchange for the old ones.
So far as the concerns outside
of the Carnegie Company are con
cerned, the matter is largely that
of a blind pool. The value of the
different stocks is a puzzling mat
ter, but it has been proposed that
an average of the prices on the
New York exchange be taken.
A number of Nhw York banks
are hesitating about entering the
underwriting syndicate. One of
the financial questions that has
arisen relates to the four Moore
companies. They cannot, without
the consent of two-thirds of both
classes of stock, permit the mort
gaging of property. This may com
plicate the giving of the bonds to
Mr. Carnegie. Latest figures
place the capitalization at SBOO,-
000,000, and it is considered to be
extremely doubtful whether it will
be considered expedient to take in
all the companies at once. The
finishing companies may be ad
mitted later than the raw steel
concerns like the Carnegie and
Federal Steel Companies.
At the present time the negotia
tions are at a critical stage, and
it is possible that the American
Steel and Wire Company and one
other concern may not agree to
enter. The valuations will be on
a close basis, and a good bit of
water will be squeezed out.
In addition to the cash payment
of $22,500,000 to Mr. Carnegie, he
will receive $1,500 for each of his
86,000 shares of stock, making a
total of over $152,000,000 for his
interest, from which the income
will be nearly $8,000,000 a year.
NIGHT WAS HER TERROR
“I would cough nearly all night
long,” writes Mrs. Chas. Applegate
of Alexandria, Ind., “and could
hardly get any sleep. I had con

a block I would cough frightfully
and spit blood, but, when all other
medicines failed, three $8 bottles

Pneumonia Can Be Prevented.
This disease always results from a
cold or an attack of the grip
and may be prevented by the
timely use of Chamberlain’s
Cough Remedy. That remedy was
extensively used during the
epidemics of LaGrippe of the past
few years, and not a single case
has ever been reported that did not
recover or that resulted in
pueumonia, which shows it to be a
certain preventive of that
dangerous disease. Chamberlain’s
Cough Remedy has gained a world
wide reputation for its cures of
cold and grip. For sale by

It was cold in New York last
week; so cold that the rivers were
ice-blocked; the streets were cov
ered with ice and the people were
covered to the eyes with heavy
woolens. Nevertheless there were
on sale in tho city thousands of
strawberries, delicious ripe fruit at
20 to 80 cents a basket. They
were from Florida, the laud of
sunshine and flowers. What a
great country is ours, where one
sectiou of it can dispense May and
June delicacies to another section
that is yet shivering with cold.
LaGRIPPE QUICKLY CURED.
“In the winter of 1898 andlß99 I
was taken down with a severe
attack of what is called. La-
Grippe,” says F. S. Hewett, a
of Winfield,
111. “The only medicine I used
was two bottles of Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy. It broke up the
cold and stopped the coughing like
magic, and I have never since
been troubled with Giippe. ”
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy can
always be depended upon to break
up a severe cold and ward off any
threalened attack of pneumonia.
It is pleasant to take, too, which
makes it the most desirable and
one of the most popular prepara
tions in use for these ailments.

New Orleans, La., February
17.—A n >gro named Thomas
Jackson was lynched today at St.
Peter, a statiou on the Texas and
Pacific road, about twenty miles

the home of Alez Bourgeois, the

on Belle Point plantation, some
distance from the plantation quar

told Bourgeois the manager waut
ed him, and the engineer mounted
the trycicle with him. A little
way further ou Jackson stabbed
the engineer in the back and then
threw the body into a ditch. He
then returned to the house und
butchered Mrs. Bourgeois and her
two babies and ransacked the
house. Two boys were visiting
the family and when they caught
the first glimpse of the attack ou
Mrs. Bourgeois they hid in the
woods.
ADer ilin negro’s departure they
went to St. Peter and gave the
alarm and returned with a mob
of several hundred. The regro
