THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
W. C. T. 0. DEPARTMENT.!
John Barleycorn, Farewell.
Farewell to you, John Barleycorn,
Our ways tonight must sever;
From this time on, thy sight I’ll
scorn,
Nor touch thee will I efer.
We can no longer meet as friends,
Nor with each other dwell,
So here tonight our friendship
ends—
John Barleycorn, farewell.
You have served me well in days
gone by,
We’ve spent long hours together,
You’ve comforted me when I was
dry,
And warmed me in cold weather.
You’ve often driven dull care
away,
And helped the “blues” dispel;
You've made my drooping spirits
gay—
John Barleycorn, farewell.
In hours of sorrow and of grief
I’ve drunk of you, old boy,
And for the moment got relief,
Been filled brim full of joy.
But when, alasl that influence
gone,
Remorse had broke thy spell,
I’d rue the folly blindly done—
John Barleycorn, farewell.
As smooth as velvet, rich as gold,
Is the flavor of “Old Crow;”
As dazzling as the rainbow’s mold
John Barleycorn, my Joe;
It fires the mind, inflames the
heart,
But delusive is as hell;
So you and I from now must part,
John Barleycorn, farewell.
The tears that thou hast caused to
flow,
The victims thou hast slain:
The bleeding hearts, the widow’s
woe;
The sorrows and the pain.
Would put the world to sorrowing,
If half I now could teU —
Thy record is a harrowing one,
John Barleycorn, farewell.
And on this solemn, midnight
hour,
At the closing of the year,
As the new century, in pomp and
power,
O’er the old one drops a tear,
I fain would here record my vow,
Ere the shadowy curtain fell.
So to my old-time friend, here’s
“how” —
John Barleycorn, farewell.

January 1, 1901.
Iu a speech before the English
Army Temperance Association,
iArd Wolseley said : “There are
yet some battles to be fought,
some great enemies to be encoun
tered by the United Kingdom, but
the most pressing enemy at pres
ent is drink. It kills more than
all our newest weapons of war
fare, and not only destroys the
body, but the mind and soul also.”
She Kept the Bucket Clean.
A writer in an English paper
says the following is a true story
that actually happened:
A man from the new house near
by came in at the alley gate and to
the kitchen where a mother waß
working for the comfort of her
family. He asked for a bucket.
The men working on the brick wall
were thirsty, and he would take
them a drink. The bucket was
brought The lady, remarking on
the discomfort of working in the
hot sun that midsummer day, of
fered to fill the bucket at her well.
The water was so cool that men
#from offices and stores near by of
ten came or sent for water fxom
the well.
Reaching out for the bucket the
man declined the water, saying in
a friendly tone that the men would
like beer better than water —he
only wanted a bucket to carry it
in. Steadily the bucket was held
back as the lady said, “I am sor
ry, I cannot loan a bucket of mine
for beer. Why, I dare not! I
have three boys, and what would
they think if I let beer be carried
in anything from my kitchen ? I
am sorry you wanted it for that
Should my boys drink liquor when
they are grown they must not say
that they ever saw beer in any
thing belonging to their mother—
not with her consent. Good day.”

Messrs. George F. Parsons & Co.,

Chamberlain’s Pain Balm. They
