FROM DAHLOREOA
Interesting Letter from Gwin
nett County Boy,
HOT CONTEST FOR HONORS
Homer Williams Tells Many Interesting
Things of the North Georgia Ag
ricultural College.
Dahlonega, Ga,, April 2.—lt
may be interesting to the readers
of The News-Herald to read a let
ter from one of old Gwinnett’s
boys, so I will attempt to say a
few words about this section of
north Georgia.
I have been attending the North
Georgia Agricultural College sinco
last September, and have learned
to love north Georgia, and espe
cially Dahlonega and the country
surrounding this beautiful little
city of 2,155 inhabitants. We can-
not help being proud of tha beau
tiful land and inspiring scenery,
which awakes and creates within
us a love for nature and for na
ture’s God.
The wonderful and picturesque
views of the famous Blue Ridge
mountain in the distance and the
smaller mountains near which the
beautiful little mountain city of
Dahlonega nestles, the primeval
forests which cover them, are
enough to awaken and inspire the
dullest imagination.
Among the many boys here in
college battling against ignorance
are Maynard Horton and myself
from Gwinnett. We find untold
pleasure and recreation rambling
Among the mountains and in
watching gold mining, which is
carried on extinsively here.
One of the largest mills of the
United States is here, and it is a
wonderful sight to see the ma
chinery, each part doing its spe
cial work.
As to the college, it is doing the
greatest work of any institution in
the state, and well deserves the
praise of every true Georgian who
recognizes the advantage of a col
legiate education. The wonderful
and excellent advantages, and at
so small an expense offered by the
institution are such as every boy
can obtain an education if he will
put forth the proper effort.
Wake up, boys, and seek a col
lege education, for the day is soon
coming when those who have only
a common school education can
not successfully compete with
those who have achieved a college
training.
On the 19th of March the se
niors planted their class tree,
which will stand as a memorial of
the pleasant days spent in college
and of the immeasurable benefit
received while here. The exercises
were very interesting and instruct
ive, and may the young men, like
that tree, grow and make good and
useful citizens.
Yesterday was field day, and af
ter twenty-eight heavy peals from
the cannon’s mouth fired bv the
hand of a Gwinnett boy in honor
of the college, the contest in ath
letic sports began, and after a day
of great pleasure and excitement
three of the prizes were awarded
to Maynard.
On the 6th instant the contest
for places in the commencement
exercises will take place, and no
little efforts are being made by the
boys from the different sections to
gain this honor.
Respectfully,
Homer Williams.

Temperance keeps the senses
clear and unembarrassed, and
makes them seize the object with
more keenness and satisfaction.
It appears with life in the face,
and decorum in the person; it
gives you the com maud of youi
head, secures your health, and pre
serves you in a condition for bus
iness.—Jeremy Collier.
Temperance gives nature her full
play, and euables her to exert her
self in all her force and vigor.—
Addison.
Temperance is a bridle of gold;
he w f ho uses it rightly is more like
god than like man.—Burton.
Every temperate life has about
it a halo of power and beauty that
outshiues the royal diamonds in
kingly crowns. Its lustre fades
not in time, nor lessens its bril
liancy during eternity. Its power
is now, and evermore.
How He Began.
A man was sitting in a saloon
with an old battered hat on his
head, a short black pipe in his
mouth, a dirty shirt and ragged
clothes, and down-trodden shoes
on his feet. But he had not al
ways been like that; he had seen
better days once. As he looked
out of the saloon door he saw two
tidy, clean little children come for
their father’s beer. As soon as
they were outside the door the lit
tle girl took a drink from the jug,
while her little brother waited pa
tiently for his turn. The poor
drunkard looked at them very sad
ly, and then he said with a sigh,
“That’s how I began, and I cannot
leave it off now.”
The Will of a Drunkard
I die a wretched sinner; audJE
leave to the world a worthless rep
utation, a wicked example, and a
memory that is fit only to per
ish.
I leave to my parents sorrow and
bitterness of soul all the days of
their lives.
I leave to my brothers and sis
ters shame and grief, and the re
proach of their acquaintances.
I leave to my wife a widowed
and broken heart, and a life of
lonely struggle with want and suf
fering,
I leave to my children a tainted
name, a ruined position, a pitiful
ignorance, and the mortifying rec
ollection of a father who, by his
life, disgraced humanity, and at
his premature death joined the
great company of those who are
never to enter the kingdom of
God.
“The Meanest Business on Earth.”
In one of our large cities there
is a man who keeps a first-class
restaurant, and his two children,
one of them an interesting boy of
about ten years of age, wait on the
table. A friend who was much
attracted by the manliness and
gentleness of the lad, said :
“You have a splendid waiter.”
“Yes,” said the proprietor, “he
is my son. I used to sell liquor.
The boy came home one day and
said : ‘Papa, we fellows at school
had a discussion today about the
business in which our parents are
engaged, and the question was
asked: ‘What does your father
do ? One of them said: ‘My
father works.’ Another said ‘My
father is a merchant.’ ‘Another
said ‘My father is a lawyer.’ I
said‘My father sells liquor.’ And
then one of the boys spoke up and
said, ‘That is the meanest busi
ness on earth.’ And then he look
ed around and asked, ‘Father, is
that so ?’ And 1 said,‘Yes, John,
it is, and I am going to get out of
it. God helping me I am going to
get out of it.’ ”

“ I was cured of a bad humor after suffering with it for five years. The
doctors and my friends said it was salt rheum. It came out on my head, neck
and ears, and then on my whole body. I was perfectly raw with it. What I
suffered during those five years, is no use telling. Nobody would believe me If
I did. I tried every medicine that was advertised to cure it. I spent money
enough to buy a house. I heard JOHNSTON’S SARSAPARILLA highly
praised. I tried a bottle of it. I began to improve right away, and when 1 had
