THITRBADT AFTERNOON.
FROM GEN’L. EYANS
He Writes About the Confed
erate Reunion.
A GOOD TIM 3 EXPECTED
The Old Soldiers to be Royally En

in Memphis, Tenn., in May.
Headquarters Georgia Division
United Confederate Veterans,
Atlanta, Ga., March 20, 1901.
1. Theeleventh annual reunion
of the United Confederate Veter
ans will be held in Memphis,
Tenn., on the 28th, 29th and 80th
of next May, and for the proper
accommodation of all confederates
and their friends, that city is
making the most ample arrange
ments. Railroad rates for dele
gates and all visitors are one cent
per mil 6 traveled, and board is se
cured at the lowest rates. All ex
pectations as to the generous hos
pitalities of Memphis, and many
interesting confederate exercises
will be fully realized by the vast
multitudes who will attend.
2. The Georgia division is here
by called to meet in convention
at the assigned headquarters of the
division at Memphis at 8:80, a. m.,
Wednesday, May 28, and at the
same place and time the two fol
lowing days for the transaction cf
business. Camp commauders will
cause their camps to elect dele
gates and alternates to the conven
tion and reunion. Where any
camp does not elect delegates, the
commander will appoiut. It is
the privilege of each camp to
choose a camp sponsor, and each
’brigade commander to choose a
brigade sponsor, and auy number
of maids of honor, but as stated in
orders from general headquarters,
‘'with the distinct understanding
that the reunion committee will
only entertain the sponsor and one
maid of honor” from division, de
partment and geueral headquar
ters.
8. Brigade commanders will at
once prepare their brigades for
this reunion. All staff officers,
including the aids of the division,
will assist in the execution of these
orders.
4 Let us all meet again in a
reunion as survivors of the valiant
and patriotic armies of the confed
eracy whose eminent leaders are
admired for their noble qualities,
and whose soldiers are houored for
their unsurpassed bravery. Let us
grasp each others hand once more
in token of a comradeship that
perpetuates and passes to posteri
ty the dearest memories known to
southern manhood.

Did you ever see a man with
three thumbs ? There was a man
here yesterday who had three, two
of which were on his right haud.
They were perfectly formed and
were of normal sizS. The man
was John Ridley, a young white
man who resides in Lumpkin
county, near Dahlonega. The ex
tra thumb does not give him any
inconvenience he says, but it
makes bis hand look a little odd.
From the Walton Tribune.
Mrs. Susan Anderson, widow of
the late Rufus Anderson, died at
her home near Walnut Grove last
Friday, aged fifty-three years.
She leaves three children, two
soub and a little girl. Her re

Prof. B. H. Jenkins, who has
closed a successful school term at
Bold Springs, was in the city Fri
day. Prof. Jenkins left Sunday
for his old home at Chipley where
he will spend three months. He
will return to Walton county
about the first of July and re-open
his school.
The serious illness of “Uncle”
Scruey Snow is the cause of sor
row' and regret, not only in Mon
roe, but throughout Waltou and
adjoiuing counties. He has reach
ed a critical stage and his death is
.momentarily expected. He has
reached an extremely advanced
age, and it is fitting that bis long
life of manly and faithful devotion
to duty should close amid the
scenes of his unselfieh efforts for
the elevation of his fellows and
that the thousands who respect
and love him because of the asso
ciations of many years, should
heap the clods of the valley upon
his lifeless clay and plant ever
greens of unforgetfnlness to the
memory of a true and righteous
man.

We notice that our article in
regard to the fact that thirty or
more good womeu in Lawrence*
ville and Gwinnett county pe
titioned the last grand jury to
break up blind tigering in Gwin
nett is partially denied by our
valuable contemporary, the News-
Herald. We are not in position
from a personal standpoint to say
our account of the action taken
wus correct, but are in position to
say that our information was ob
tained through a valuable citizen
of Gwinnett who we believed knew
what he was talking about, and,
upon his statement ttie mistake,
if any, was made. It was certain
ly not cur purpose or desire to cast
any unjust criticism in the least,
for we commend the action taken
by the Gwinnett grand jury and
wish that men in all sections of
the state would have the same
“back-bone” and nerve to do their
duty. We did not mean, in the
least, to misrepresent the facts
and hope, without further com
ment, that our position is clearly
understood. We noted the matter
because we deemed it compliment
ary to our beloved neighbor,
Gwiuuett.
