THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
GOVERNOR NORTHEN OH
CHRISTIANS IN POLITICS.
In connection with the great
fight which Governor Northeu will
lead against the saloons, his views
on the relation of Christians to
politics become interesting. In a
speech to the Baptist Young Peo
ple’s Union at Little Rock May
10th, 1900, he said;
“I am here to say, in this high
presence, to the young men who
are to become citizens of the twen
tieth century, that every man of
you, regardless of class, calling or
condition, should be an intelli
gent, active, courageous politician.
Every farmer, every mechanic,
every manufacturer, every capital
ist, and certainly every minister
of the gospel, in my candid judg
ment, if he discharges his high
duty to the nation, to God and to
humanity, I repeat, must become
an active politician, whenever the
policy and the fundamental prin
ciples of the government are on
trial.
“If politics mean that public
office is a private snap for the
benefit of the individual, regard
less of the safety and prosperity
of the state; if politics mean the
administration of public affairs in
the interest of personal ambition
and the utilization of public fuuds
for private ends; if politics mean
the success of a political party
rather than the strengthening of
the state; if politics are intended
to train demagogues and not make
statesmen, to encourage ballot
box stuffing rather than honest
methods in elections, then I charge
you spew them out and have done
with them forever.
“I insist that politics mean now
as they have always been intended
to mean, ‘The administration of
public affairs in the interest of
the peace, the prosperity and the
safety of the state and the nation.’
“If this be politics, I do not
hesitate, in this presence, to re
peat that every American citizen,
especially every Christian citizen,
should be an intelligent, active
politician. Is a minister any the
less an American citizen because
he is a minister ?
“I, of course, do not mean that
all these people should run for
office, nor, necessarily, hold office
if they could get it, but I do desire
to be understood as saying, it is
the duty of everv citizen to aid
actively in determining who shall
hold office and then compel ‘the

the blood-bought liberties of the
people are preserved, and that our
heritage of free government by the
people and for the people shall be
safely delivered to the people in
the generations that are yet to
come.
“If politics mean government
and order and law, then politics
have been ordained of God, and
they should be kept clean and
pure and good. No good man can
stand in the of what God
has ordained and leave it to decay
and rot, because of the corruption
of bad men, who have touched it
with their filth. If so, then the
kingdom of righteousness suffers,
humanity groans under the bur
dens of tyranny, and riot fattens
on the blood of the innocent. The
man who slinks away from what
he calls corruption in politics is
the coward who dare not defend
the weak in the presence of the
strong; who Jwould see the inno

gathers his sanctified robes around
his cowardly carcass while disaster
and distress fill the homes of the
suffering and the oppressed.”

A SUBSTANTIAL FACT.
W. R. Clark, Pickaway, Va.,
says: I have for several years
been using Ramon’s Pills in my
family with most satisfactory re
sults, and do not hesitate to rec
ommend them to my customers as
superior to any of the various
kinds kept in stock. Not only are
your pills reliable but Ramon’s
Relief and Nerve and Bone Oil are
the most satisfactory remedies I
ever handled, and if they wore
more generally used they would
often make the doctor’s bill only
25c instead of $2.00. These goods
need no dusting in my stock be
cause they are constantly coming
in and going out —are trade win

good qualities ere not a theory but
a substantial fact. Sold by all
dealers.
