THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
Mr. Smith and the
Soldiers’ Home.
From the Atlanta Constitution.
State Senator W. T. Smith, of
Gwinnett county, has been in the
city lor the past two days on busi
ness connected with the soldiers’
home, For ten years Senator
Smith has been working for the
soldiers’ home. His interest in it
never lags. It will be remembered
that his eloquent speech in the
senate during the last session
urging that it pass was largely
responsible for its becoming a law.
Senator Smith said yesterday in
talking of the home:
‘‘Yes, my dream is about to be
realized and the home thrown
open to the old soldiers. I be
lieve that the first of next month,
when we throw the door open,
will be oue of, if not the happiest
day of my life and I am lookiug
forward to it with so much pleas
ure that the tune seems to drag
bv. All through the state the peo
ple are interested in the opening
of the home and I do not believe
there is a man, woman or child in
the state who is nut glad that the
old soldiers are going to have a
place where they can pass their
declining days.
“The way the people are comiug
to the front in offering to furnish
rooms is one evidence of that. I
have had several conferences with
Judge Calhoun since I have been
in the city and have looked over
the list of those who have applied
for admission. There are now
eighty applicants and they are
well distributed throughout the
state. The home will accom
modate about oue hundred and
twenty and I believe that be
fore long we wiil have it full. I
hope so, at any rate. ’
In concluding his remarks about
the home, Colonel Smith said:
“Well, I could talk to you about
the home for hours I am so full
of it. lam going home tonight,
but I will be here for the opening
if lam well enough to crawl.”
And those who know how Colonel
Smith feels about the home and
the work he has done for it can
not doubt him.

THE NEWS-HERALD.
About the School at Demorest.
To the readers of the News-
Herald :
It may be that a great many of
you have not heard of the new
Congregational College, the “J. S.
Green College,” located at Demor
est, Georgia, Habersham county.
It is offering a rare opportunity
for young men and young ladies,
boys and girls, to obtain a collegi
ate education at a very nominal
cost, tuition in all the grades be
ing very low. Its site is a most
beautiful and healthful location,
and cannot be surpassed in the
state, with itsTife-giving mountain
breezes, the numberless cool crys
tal springs, the pure water and the
high intellectual and moral tone
of the people of Demorest is not
to be found in every town.
Then one of the best things
about it is that the public saloon
canuot be known there in all the
years to come. The county of
Habersham is under prohibition
of liquor selling by state law, and
is not under local option law. The
charter of the city of Demorest is
also prohibitory, and gives the
city council power to make any
necessary ordinances for its en
forcement. In addition to these
safeguards, every original deed of
lots contains a clause which forev
er prohibits the manufacture, sale,
etc., of spirituous or malt liquors.
Then again, the faculty of this
school is one of the most efficient
in the state, having the Rev. C.C.
Spence, A. 8., who was born and
brought up in your town, for its
president.
It seems to me that this would
be an inducement for Gwinnett
and surrounding counties to pat
ronize this school.
While the school is quite young,
it has already enrolled over 500
students at the last term, coming
from Georgia, the Carolinas, Ala
bama, Florida, and even Texas
The educational societies of the
Congregational churches have been
spendiug thousands of dollars du
ring the last ten months in enlarg
ing and building dormitories for
both boys and girls, and iu equip
ments generally, and will continue
to do so until it is one of the best
equipped schools in the south.
They are now just about ready
to break dirt to build and equip
one of the best music halls in the
state.

Blood .
We live by our blood, and on
it. We thrive or starve, as
our blood is rich or poor.
There is nothing else to live
on or by.
When strength is full and
spirits high, we are being re
freshed, bone muscle and brain,
m body and mind, with con
tinual flow of rich blood.
This is health.
When weak, in low spirits,
no cheer, no spring, when rest
is not rest and sleep is not
sleep, we are starved ; our blood
is poor; there is little nutri
ment in it.
Back of the blood, is food,
to keep the blood rich. When
it fails, take Scott’s Emulsion
of Cod Liver Oil. It sets the
whole body going again—man
woman and child.
If you have not tried it, send for free sample,
its agreeable taste will surprise you.
