THURSADT AFTERNOON.
W. C. T. U. DEPARTMENT,
A Barrel of Whiiky.
A barrel of heartaches, of head
aches, of woes,
A barrel of curaea, a barrel of
blowa,
A barrel of teara from a world
weary wife,
A barrel of sorrows, a barrel of
strife,
A barrel of all unavailing regret,
A barrel of cares and a barrel of
debt;
A barrel of crime and a barrel of
pain,
A barrel or hope ever blaeted and
vain,
A barrel of falsehood, a barrel of
cries
That falls from the maniac’s lips
when he dies,
A barrel of agony, heavy and dull,
A barrel of poison—of this nearly
full,
A barrel of liquid damnation that
fireß
The brain of the fool who believes
it inspires,
A barrel of poverty, ruin and
blight,
A barrel of terrors that grow with
the night,
A barrel of hunger, a barrel of
groans,
A barrel of orphans’ most pitiful
moans,
A barrel of serpents that hiss as
they pass
From the bead of the liquor that
glow's in the glass.
Liquor and Murder-
Within the last few months
nine women have been Bhot —
nearly all of them fatally—in the
city of St. Louis by angry and
jealous husbands or lovers. The
Central Christian Advocate says:
“An expert neurologist has ex
amined each case, and has publish
ed results of his studies, showing
that eight out of these nine men
who set out on a murderous mis
sion were the victims of drink,
and they fortified themselves w ith
liquor in advance of undertaking
their desperate deeds. These fig
ures, taken from a single city,
may be accepted as typical of an
aggregate which must be apalling.
Apart from all other woes por
duced by liquor, this one needs to
be emphasized: it nerves the arm
of the murderer or assassin. Were
the account summed up each year
of the number of men and women
stabbed, shot or beaten to death
by drunken assailauts, the aggre
gate would be frightful.”
e. Touching Incident.
I have read of a town meeting
in Pennsylvania where the ques
tion of license was to he decided.
As the question was about to be
put, there arose from one corner of
the room a miserable female,
wrinkled and gaunt, and, stretch
ing out her arms, in a shrill voice
she cried:
“Look upon me. You all know
me, or once did. You all know I
was once the mistress of the best
farm in the township. You all
know, too, I had one of the best,
the most devoted of husbands.
You all know I had five noWe
hearttd, industrious boys. Where
are they now ? Doctor, where are
they now ? You all knuW. You
all know thny lie in a row, side by
side, in yonder churchyard—all,
every one of them, filling the

KEEP YOUR BLOOD GLEAN
drunkards’grave 1 They were all
taught to believe that temperate
drinking was safe —excess alone
ought to be avoided ; and they nev
er acknowledged excess. But I
saw the gradual chauge coming
over my family and prospects with
dismay and horror; I felt we were
all to be overwhelmed in one com
mon rain. I tried to ward off the
blow, 1 tried to break the spell—
the delusive spell—in which the
idea of the benefits of temperate
driuking had iuvolved my husband
and sons I begged,l prayed; but
the odds were against me. * * *
I shall soon stand before the judg
ment seat of God —I shall meet
you there, you false guides, and

She Bpoke and vanished. But
when the chairman put the ques
tion, “Shall any license be granted
for the sale of spirituous
liquors?” the response was unani
mous—“No!”
TOT CAUSES NIGHT ALARM.
“One night my brother’s baby
was taken with croup,” writes
Mrs. J. C. Snider, of Crittenden,
Ky., “it seemed it would strangle
before we could get a doctor, so
we gave it Dr. King’s New Discov
ery, which gave quick relief and
permanently cured it. We always
keep it in the house to protect
our children from croup and
whooping cough. It cured me of
a chronic bronchial trouble that
no other remedy would relieve.”

Mark Twain and Adam.
In Harper’s for April Mark
Twain gives us a bit of his old
time humor in his“ Extracts from
Adam’s Dairy.” Here are the
first extracts:
Monday.—This new creature
with the long hair is a good deal
in the way. It is always hauging
around and felluwing me about.
I don’t like this; I am not used to
company. I wish it would stay
with other animals. Cloudy to
day, wind in the east; think we
shall have rain. We? Where did
I get that word? I remember now
the new creature uses it.
Tuesday.—Been examining the
great w'aterfall. It is the finest
thing on the estate, I think. The
Dew creature calls itNiagara Falls,
why, lam sure Ido not know.
Says it looks like Niagara Falls.
That is not a reason ; it is mere
waywardness aud imbecility. I
get no chance to name anything
myself. The new creature names
everything that comes along be
fore I can get in a protest. Aud
always that same pretext is offer
ed —it looks like the thing. There
is the dodo for instance. Says
the moment one looks at it one
sees at a glance that it “looks like
a dodo.” It will have to keep that
name, no doubt. It wearies me
to fret about it, and in does no
good, anyway. Dodo. It looks
no more like a dodo than I do.
Wednesday- —Built me a shel
ter against the rain, but could
not have it to myself in peace.
The new creature intruded. When
I tried to put it out it shed water
out of the holes it looks with, and
wiped it away with the back >f its
paws, and made a noise 9uch as
some of the other animals make
when they are iu distress. I wish
it would not talk; it is always
talking. That sounds like a
cheap fling at the poor creature,
a slur; but Ido not mean it so.
I have never heard the human
voice before, and auy new and
strange souud intruding itself
here upon the solemn hush of
these dreaming solitudes offends
my ears and seems a false note.
