LESSON NOTES
Lesson For Sunday, April J—
, The Two Foundations —
Matt. 7:15-29.
“Beware of false prophets, which
come to you in sheep’s clothing, but
inwardly they are ravening wolves.
“Ye shall know them by their
fruits. Do men gather grapes of
thorns, or figs of thistles ?
“Even so every good tree bringeth
forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree
bringeth forth evil fruit.
“A good tree cannot bring forth
evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree
bring forth good fruit.
“Every tree that bringeth not forth
good fruit is hewn down, and cast
into the fire.
“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall
know them.
“Not every one that saith unto me,
Lord, Lord, shall enter into the
kingdom of heaven; but he that do
eth the will of my Father which is
in heaven.
“Many will say to me in that day,
Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied
in thy tpinie?and in thy name have
cast out devils? and in thy name
done many wonderful works?
“And then will I profess unto
them, T never knew you : depart from
me, ye that work iniquity.
“Therefore whosoever heareth
these sayings of mine, and doeth
them, I will liken him unto a wise
man, which built his house upon a
rock;
“And the rain descended, and the
floods came, and the winds blew, and
beat upon that house; and it fell not:
for it was founded upon a rock.
“And every one that heareth these
sayings of mine, and doeth them not.
shall be likened unto a foolish man,
which built his house upon the sand.
“And the rain descended, and the
floods came, and the winds blew, and
beat upon that house; and it fell:
and great was the fall of it.
“And it came to pass, when Jesus
had ended these sayings, the people
were astonished at his doctrine:
“For he taught them as one having
authority, and not as the scribes.”
Golden text—“Be ye doers of the
word, and not hearers only.”—James
1:22.
Some people think that because
our Lord said, “judge not,” meaning
that we must not pass censorious
judgment on others without suf
ficient grounds, we should not care
fully scrutinize and form estimates
of those with whom we are brought
into contact. But the influences ex
erted on us by others is too great and
of too serious a nature for us not to
do these things. Jesus says we must
and that we must not go altogether
by men’s professions, but carefully
study their lives and actions.
***
Actions are the perfected product
of the life of a man, even as the fruit
is the perfected product of the life of
the tree. You do not decide a fruit
tree’s character and worth by its
foliage, or even by its flower. \ou
test its fruit. If that is bad, the tree
is not a good pno, no matter how
shapely it is, or how beautiful its
foliage and bloom. So, no matter
what a man’s position, culture, ap
pearance or professions; if his life is
not pure, clean, high, godly, he is not
good. And the greater his preten
sions the greater hypocrite he is.
***
The man whose fruitage of life is
not good is doomed to destruction.
His end is everlasting destruction
from the presence of the Lord. God
bears with evil men a long time,
giving J| m • , pi>: Lini ;• to r . • ,
but sooner er later comes the com-
[mand: Cut it down: why cuinber
eth it the ground ? The axe lies ai
the root of every tree, and every one
that bringeth not forth good fruit is
hewn down and cast into the lire.
We must all appear before the judg
ment seat of Christ; and in order
“that every one may receive the
things done in his body, according to
that he hath done, whether it be
good or bad.” 2 Cor. 5:10.
#**
Professions do not pass for deeds
with God. It is not the sayer, but
the doer, who finds a place in the
kingdom. He that finds eternal life
must “follow” Jesus; and Jesus said
that He did always the things that
were pleasing to His Father. Pro
fessions of faith, however strong,
and of allegiance to Jesus, however
loud and of t-repeated, wi 11 avail a man
nothing with Him, for as James
says: “Faith without work.f’—i. e.,
deeds, life to correspond—“is dead,
being alone.” Faith is made perfect
only by a resulting life of obedienee
to Him in whom we have believed.
***
There are go in., to be some very
great surprises “in that day.” There
are some men who have used the
name of Jesus very freely and very
boldly in this world, and the name
has proved to be powerful. Yet the
men using it have lived lives other
than such as those who know and
love Him should lead. And He does
not know them as His, because they
“work iniquity.” One of America’s
great philosophers said something
like this about a man of profession of
good without its practice: “I can
not hear what you say because of
what you are.” So Jesus will say to
some. God is not mocked.
Every life, as every house, must
have a foundation. And there are
many foundations from which to
choose. One may build on “success
in life,” and erect a fair structure.
But it will abide only “in life.” An
other on pleasure, but this is only
“for a season.” Another on morali
ty; but this concerns only his rela
tions to men in this life, and reaches
not to God and eternity. The only
sure foundation is that which is laid
in obedience to Christ, the mortar
that holds the stones in place being
love. Against this no storms of time
or eternity can prevail. It rests on
the eternal things, which cannot
fail.
**#
Tests are coming that will try
every man’s life-foundation. Some
come in this world, and characters
that have seemed strong have crum
bled into wreckage. These days have
seen many examples of this. And
in every case it has been made mani
fest that the men who have gone to
ruin have been secretly violating the
teachings of Christ. Not all lives,
however, have their strongest tests
here. “That day”—“the day of the
Lord,” will bring the final and per
fect tests; and woe to him whose
foundations are not sound and strong,
laid oh the rock of God’s truth and
righteousness. Great will be the fall
and irretrievable.
Yes, He taught as one having au
thority, for He did have it. He is
lt the Truth.” His is the ultimate
authority. “Never man spake like
this man”: for never was man like
this Man. He spoke the words of
(lod. He never speculated about
truth; He never reasoned out truth:
He was truth and He simply ex
pressed Himself. And it was all
truth. That makes a great founda
tion on which to build a life. Not a
jot or tittle shall fail of all that He
said. “If ye hear these things, bless
ed are ye if ye do them.”

Another Good Man Clone Wrong.
He neglected to take Foley’s Kid
ney Cure at the first signs of Kidney
trouble, hoping it would wear away,
and he was soon a victim of Bright’s
disease. There is danger in delay,
but if Foley’s Kidney Cure is taken
at once the symptoms will disappear,
the kidneysare strengthened and you
are soon sound and well. A. R. Bass,
of Morgantown, Inch, had to get up
ten or twelve times in the night, and
had a severe backache and pains in
the kidneys and was cur' d by Foley’s
