LESSON NOTES
Lesson For Sunday, April 15—
Jesus Power Over Death.
Luke 7:1-17.
Golden text—“ Jesus saith unto
her, I am the resurrection and the
life.”—John 11:25.
Jesus had healed great multitudes
in Capernaum; seemingly the city
might well have been free from dis
ease and death for a little while.
But no; there is ever more sorrow in
the world. For sin ever works and
brings forth its fruits—disease and
death, sorrow and distress. And ever
a peor suffering humanity must be
stretching out its hands for help and
crying to God. Blessed are they who
know Jesus and can call on Him.
-X
--* *
The knowledge of the one true
God, and the things which He had
spoken through the “Law and the
Prophets,” developed some fine char
acters among the proselytes. As for
example, this centurion, and Corne
lius. The light they got from the
Jews of that day was but dim ; yet in
it they saw God, and they were trans
formed in character and life. The
vision of God has this effect, and
when that shall be perfect, “we shall
be like Him.” Meanwhile, we can
see Him in the person of Jesus
Christ; and what manner of men and
women we ought to be!
#
* *
What a beautiful combination of
characteristics are found in this man.
A commander of men, yet what hu
mility in the presence of one whom
he felt to be sent of God. And his
faith, how clear. It could have been
based only on two things—the testi
mony of others and his observation
of Jesus himself. With open eyes he
saw; with open mind he accepted the
testimony, and he cried out to Jesus
for help. The blessing followed—of
course. When did the Master ever
fail to answer humble faith’s call ?
#*# •
How pleased Jesus was with this
exhibition of faith. One can feel the
joy that came to Him pulsing in the
words. There are many ways in
which we can please our Lord. By
our confessions of Him; by our ser
vices to Him'; by our witnessing for
Him; by our services rendered to
our fellows. But first and foremost
stands faith—simple believing. For
“Without faith it is impossible to
please Him.” And we may be sure
that even on the throne He is glad
when we show great faith in Him.
FIFTY CENTS
IN some conditions the
gain from the use
of Scott’s Emulsion is
very rapid. For this
reason we put up a
fifty-cent size, which is
enough for an ordinary
cough or cold or useful
as a trial for babies
and children. In other
conditions the gain is
slower —health cannot
be built up in a day.
In such cases Scott’s
Emulsion must be taken
as nourishment; a food
rather than a medicine.
It’s a food for tired and
weak digestions.

Jesus seems to have hated death.
It was His enemy and the enemy oi
His people. It was sin’s fruit. So.
at every favorable opportunity He
antagonized it. He snatched people
from its jaws, and even, in a few
cases, after it had seemed to have
devoured some, He despoiled it and
restored them—Jairus’ daughter, this
son of the widov, Lazarus. Ah,
this all was but prophecy and pledge
of what He is going to do for all His.
The last enemy is death, and we can
all shout: “Thanks be unto God,
which giveth us the victory, through
our Lord Jesus Christ”
What a blessed thing it is that this
so great power was, and is, combined
with so tender a compassion as was,
and is, His. “He had compassion on
her.” Satan’s power has been great
over men, and he has been merciless.
Yet a greater than he is of tender
compassion, not only towards the
suffering but towards the erring and
sinful as well. If we would all have
more confidence in our Lord's copi
passion for us, our griefs and our
sorrows would be wonderfully as
suaged.
Jesus is the only one who has ever
lived who had the right to say to
those who mourned for their dead,
“Weep not.” For He alone had the
power to undo death’s work and de
liver his victims. But now all who
are in Christ can, while they shed
tears of sorrow at parting from loved
ones, yet grieve “not as those who
have no hope.” For they know that
death cannot hold those that are in
Him. One has to go to a heathen
land, or read the utterances of the
heathen, to know his own blessings
in Christ.
The people were right; God had
visited His people, and it was be
cause He was God that all these
marvelous works were done. And
blessed be His name, the visit has
not come to an end. He is among us
still, full of grace and truth, full of
love and mercy and tender compas
sion, Let none of us treat Him as
His people treated Him. Let us not
rejoice in the good He has wrought
and is constantly working among us,
and vet reject Him. This is what the
Jews did ; and many in our day do it
also.
Man's Unreasonableness
is often as great as woman's. But
Thos. S. Austin, Mgr. of the “Repub
lican,” of Leavenworth, Ind., was
not unreasonable, when he refused
to allow the doctors to operate on his
wife, for female trouble, “Instead ”
he says, “we concluded to try Electric
Bitters. My wife was then so sick,
she could hardly leave her bed, and
five [s] physicians had failed to re
lieve her. After taking Electric Bit
ters, she was perfectly cured, and can
now perform all her house hold
duties.” Guaranteed by A. M. Winn
& Son, druggist, price 50c.

BELL WANTS GOVERNMENT
TO HELP IMPROVE ROADS
April 7, 1900. Hon. Geo.Cortel
you, Postmaster-General, Wash.,
D. C. Dear Sir: Now that the
rural free delivery mail service is
no longer an experiment but a fix
ture, and is the greatest blessing
that could be extended to the peo
ple in the interior sections, I re
spectfully suggest that some sort
of steps should be taken by this
great government for the improve-'
ment of our public roads, which '
would greatly improve our mail (
facilities and immensely increase j
our wealth.
This, I believe, could be done j
by using a portion of the funds j
derived from the sale of public,
lands, and by the co-operation of
the goverment with the different 1
states. Why should not the gov
ernment appropriate money forthe
improvment of our public roads,
as well as for rivers and harbors?
It is all for the benefit of com
merce and transportation, and
the same end would be accomplish
ed by one, as by the other. I be
lieve that this great movement
should be started by you, coming
as it would from the most impor
tant branch of all departmental
service, and almost, if not entirely,
under the supervision of the post
master-general.
If you should get behind this
important work, and ultimately
accomplish this much desired
legislation, you will have done
more for the American people
than any individual, and immor
talize yourself, for all time to
come. Please give me your views
on this important subject.
Very truly yours,
Thomas M. Bell.

r AT A DDM THE PLAGUE
V/MriMfifl OF WINTER
*
Every Catarrh sufferer dreads the return of cold weather, for at the first
cold breath of the season this plague of Winter is fanned into life with all
its miserable symptom;!. The nostrils are stopped up, and a constant drop
ping of mucus back into the throat keeps up a continual hawking and*spit
ting, the patient has dull headaches, ringing noises in the ears and a half
sick, depressed feeling all the time. Every inner lining and tissue of the
body becomes inflamed, and secretes an unhealthy matter which is absorbed
into the blood and distributed to all parts of the body, and the disease be
comes constitutional. The catarrhal poison brings on stomach troubles,
affects the Kidneys and Bladder, attacks the soft bones of the throat and
head and if not checked leads to Consumption. A disease so deep-seated
and dangerous cannot be wished out, neither can it be smoked away.
Sprays, washes, inhalations, etc., are useless, because they only reach the
membranes and tissues, while the real cause of the disease is in the blood,
S. S. S. cures Catarrh because it attacks it through the blood; it goes into
the circulation and drives out all unhealthy accumulations and catarrhai
matter, and when this is done every part oi the system receives a supply of
