One of the financial writer* i* a New York paper state* that there are only 8,000,000 bale* of cotton now at the beginning of the year 1924 and consumption is going on at the rate of 1,000,000 bales a month. It will be nine and a half months before sufficient new cotton can be counted on to supply the re quirements of the mills. In other words, there will he a demand for 1,600,000 bale 3 more cotton than there is ni sight, so that there is an exceptional field for speculation. In other words, the mills of the world will take much more cotton thatn is offering to fulfill the actual j pin ning requirements. That would in dicate a very much higher price than S 3 cent cotton. f requently there is talk of cotton scarcity, but some way or somehow there always turns up a supply ev ery year. To our mind, there is only one . ,-tion: Where will the inadequate ;u; ply reach its limit of price in the , ,cnce cf a superior demand? We do not pretend to know. It looks like the price is going to be fired by bidders and holders in the open market governed by the law of supply and demand. The pric es made by this law are the prices which will prevail.
