THE KING JAMES BIBLE
HELD NOT SECTARIAN
Washington, I). C., February 7.
The supreme court of California has
decided the King James version of
j the Holy Elbe is neither sectarian
Uor denominational. The decision
affirms the judgment of the superior
| court in Fresno- county and reverses
the judgment of the California-dis
trict court as appeals.
Those who desired the Bible dis
barred from school libraries cam;end
ed that the constitutional uro
vision .which states that “no publi
cation of a sectarian, partisan or de
nominational-character must he used
►or distributed in any .school, nr
.school library, nor must any sec
tarian or denominational doctrine be
taught therein,” wits authority for
such disbarment. ’
The supreme court, in ’ rendering
its decision,, stated that:
“The fact that the King Jam s ver
sion. of the Bible was not approved
by fill sects of a . particular religion,
nor by the, followers of all religions
would not class it as sectarian' for
library purposes. There is no ia
lig ion that has found .universal uc
'■cptance. and therefore np book of
religion that' has. s
. “The . contention that l,he Bible in--,
the King Janes translation is,:. Look
of a sectarian character rests or; hr,
fact that there sjre * 1 1
tween it" and, among other.-., the
DoUay version; that it is cf jjrp.L-s-,.
tant'authorship,.that it is, used-, ir
protestant,"churches, and,that it i
not approved by the Roman Catholic
church.
“The mere act of purchasing r.
book to be added to the school library
does not carry with it any implica
tion of-the adoption of the theory or
dogma contained therein, qr any ap
proval of the book itself, except as a
work of literature fit to be included
in a reference library. For aught
that appears in the instant case, the
library in question may already con
tain copies of the Douay version of
the Bible as well of the Talmud, Ko
ran and the teachings of Confucius.”
