Bootlahd. the land prolific Of intellectual giants, haa none grander than Hftgh Miller, great for science and great: for God. He came of the bast Highland blood, and ho wns ft descendant of Donald Roy, a mar eminent f r *«' his piety an<l the rare gift of second sight. His attainments, climbing up as he did from the quarry and the wall cf the stonemason, drew forth the astonished ad miration ot Buckland and Murchison, the scientists, and Dr. Chalmers, the theologiau, nnd held universities Bpellbound while he told them the story of what he had scon of God in the old red sandstone, That man did more than aDy being that ever lived to show that the God of the hills is the God of the Bible, and he struck his tuning fork on the rocks of Cromarty until he brought geology and theology accordant In divine worship. His two booksj entitled “Footprints of the Creator’* and the ‘-Testi mony of the Rocks,’* proclaimed the banns of an everlasting marriage between genuine Science and revelation, On this latter book he toiled day and night* through love of nature apd love of God, until he could not sleep, and his brain gave way, an l he was found dead with a revolver by his side, tho cruel Instrument bnving had two bullets— ono for him and the other for the gunsmith who, at the coroner’s inquest, wns examin ing It alld fell dead. Have you any doubt of the beatification of Hugh Miller after his hot brain had oeased throbbing that winter night in his study at Portobello? Among the mightiest of earth, among the mightiest of heaven. No one ever doubted the piety of William Cowper, the author of those three great hymns, “Oh, For h Closer Walk With God I’* "What Various Hindrances We Meet!” “There Is a Fountain Filled With Blood” William Cowper, who shares with Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley tho chief honors ot Christian hymnology. In hypochondria he resolved to take his own life and rode to the river Thames, but found a man seated on some goods at the very point from which he expected to spring and rode back to his home and that night threw himself upon his own knife, but the blade broke, and then ho hanged himself to the celling, but the rope parted. No wonder that when God merci fully delivered him from that awful demen tia he sat down and wrote that other hymn just ns memorable. Go<l moves In a mysterious way His wonder* to perform. Be plants Hts footsteps In the sea And rides upon the storm. Blind unbelief Is sure to erf Aud scan His work in vain. God is His own Interpreter, And He will make it plain. While wo make this meroiful and rlghtems allowance in regard to thoso who were plunged into mental incoherence, I declare that the man who in the U9e of his real on, by his own act, snaps the bond between his body and hl9 soul goes straight into perdi tion. Shall I prove it? Revelation xxi.. 8, “Murder«rs shall have their part in tho lake which burneth with flro and brimstone;’* Revelation xxil., 15, “Without are dogs and fcoreerers and whoremongors and murder ers." You do not believe the New Testa ment? Then perhaps you believe the Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt not kill.’* Do you say all these passages refer to the taking of the life of others? Then I jvsk you if you are not as for your own lifo as foi the life of others? God gave you a special trust in your life. He made you the custodian of your life as he made you the custodian of no other life* He gave you as weapons with which to defen 1 It two arms to strike back assailants, two eyas to watch for invuslou and a natural love of life which ought ever to be on the alert. Assassination of others Is a mild crime compared with tho assassination of yourself, because in the latter ease it ’ft treachery to uu especial trust, it is the surrender of a castle you were especially appointed to keep, it is treason to a natural law, and it is treason to God added to ordinary murder. To show how God in tho Bible looked upon this crime l point you to the rogues' picture gallery in some parts of the Bibie, the pictures of the people who have com mitted this dunatural crime. Here is the headless trunk of Saul on the walls of B ith shnn. Here is the man who chased little David—ten feet in statue chasing four. Here is the man who consulted a clairvoyant, witch of Eu lor. Here is a man who, whipped in little, instead of surrendering his sword with dignity, asks his servant to slay him. and when the servant declines then the giant plants the hilt of the sword in the earth, the sharp point sticking upward, and he throws his bo ly on it and expires, the coward, the suicide! Here is Ahithophel, the Mactiinvelll of Dlden times, betraying his best friend, David, in or ter that he may be come prime minister of Absalom and joining that fellow in his attempt at parricide. Not getting what he wanted by change of polities he takes a short cut out of a disgraced life into the suicide’s eternity. There he Is, the ingrate! Here is Abi nelech practically a suicide. In your trouble I prescribe life in stead of death. People who havo had It Worse than you will ever have it have gone songful on their way. Remember that God keeps the chronology of your life with as much precision os Ho keeps the chronology of nations* Why was it at midnight, just at midnight, the destroying angel struck the blow that set the Israelites free from bondage? The 430 years were up at 12 o’clock that night. The 430 years were not up at 11, and 1 o’clock would have been tardy and too late. The 430 years were up at 12 o’clock, and the de stroying angel struck the blow, and Israel was free. And Ood knows just tho hour When it is time to lead you Up from earthly bondage, By his grace make not the worUt of things, but the best of them. If you must take the pills, do not ohowthem. Your ever lasting rewards willaocord with your earthly perturbations, just as Calus gave to Agrippft a chain of gold as heavy as had been his chain of iron. For yoilr asking you may have the same grace that was given to the Italian martyr, Algerius, who, down in the darkest of dungeons, dated his letter from “the delectable orchard of the Leonine pris* on.’* Ther* is ft sorrowless world, and It is so radiant that the noonday sun is only tho lowest doorstep, and tho aurora that lights up our northern heavens, confounding as tronomers as to what it can be, is the wav ing of the banners of the procession eomo to take the conquerors home from church militant to church triumphant, and you ami I have 10,000 reasons for wanting to go there, but we will uever get there either by self immolation or impeniteney. All our sins slain by the Christ who came to do that thing, we wont to go in at ju*t the time divinely arranged, and from a couch divine ly spread, nnd then the clang of the sepul chral gates behind us will be overpowered by the clang of the opening of the solid pearl before us. O God, whatever others may choose, g;ve me a Christian’s life, a Christian’s death, a Christian’s burial, a Christian’s immortality I THE WRECK WAS FEARFUL And the Loss of Life Appalling ou the Rock Island Road. A special from Lincoln, Neb., says: It was long after daylight before the burning pile at the scene of Thursday night’s frightful railroad wreck had sufficiently cooled to allow the grue some work of removing the debris and search for the victims to begin. The corrected list of dead is as follows: C. I). Stanuard, conductor; Ike De pew, engineer; William Craig, fireman; W. O. Hamble, farmer; Joseph Myc ger, farmer; E. H. Zeernecke, ab stractor ; Henry Peters, Omaha ; L. D. Matthews, traveling man; Dr. C. N. Birney, Council Bluffs; E. H. Myers, traveling man; A. B. Abee, insurance agent; J. N. Beaver, clothier. All the above were buried in the wreck and so badly burned as to be almost unrecog nizable. The list of injured is large but noue are seriously hurt. Everything points to the fact that the train was deliberately wrecked. Officials of tho Rock Island railroad will accept no other theory, and have offered a reward of SI,OOO for the capture of the miscreants. The fish plates were removed with a crowbar, which was found with the plates, in the tall grass near the burned bridge. The rail was left in place, so that the engineer was unable to discover the dastardly work. A THOROUGH CONiKSSION. “Herbert,” 6he said, “tell me one thing, and tell me truthfully. But each monosyllable may have ns many' as a dozen distinct meanings. To distin guish these the Words are uttered in different “tones’’ each word varying or changing in pitch according to its significance. In speaking a monosyl lable the pitch is set either high or low, and is kept constant or raised or sunk, even ns much as a semi-tone. The result is that the Chinese detect difierences of “tone” more readily than variations in the vowel seunds. In addition, when a monosyllable pro nounced in a certain manner lias more than one meaning, certain qualifying articles (classifier ) are used with these words to distinguish them. Hence it comes that all Chinese puns depend on a confusion between two different vowels in monosyllabic words. So the puns are invariably bad, and never attain to the refined atrocity so com mended by Lamb.—New York Dis patch. Eyes of Russian Criminals. One of the most curious results of the investigations made by doctors in the Russian jails is the statement that each group of criminals has its own particular color of the eye. A legal journal at Odessa stated that it has been found that thieves and murder ers usually possess “chestnut-brown” eyes. Robbers—that is to say, thieves in a large und violent line of business —have slate-colored eyes, and the same is stated of criminals convicted of swindling. The vagabond classes, among whom are probably reckoned the pasHportless class, have eyes of azure-blue tint. The color most ob served among minor criminals and those convicted of slight offences is “chestnut-brown green.”—New York Dispatch. Queer Place for a Sparrow’s Nest.
