Rheumatism
Is a blood disease and only a blood reme
dy can cure it. So many people make
the mistake of taking remedies which
at best are only tonics and cannot possi

Greencastle, Indiana, says: “For years
I have suffered with Sciatic Rheuma

able to relieve. I took many patent
medicines but they did not seem to
reach my tronble. I gradually grew
worse until I was un-

Her Harnhoem Had No Effect
“Would you be kind enough to
return my photograph,” she wrote.
“I gave it to you in a moment
of girlish folly, and I have since
had occasion to regret that I was
so thoughtless in such matters.”
Of course she pictured that pho
tograph framed and hung up in
his room, and was inclined to
think that he would part with it
with deep regret. Of course he
had offended her in in some way,
but it was unnecessary to inquire
how.
The reply to her note came the
following day:
“1 regret.” it read, “that I am
unable at this late day to pick out
your photograph. However, I
send you my entire collection,
numbering a little over 200, and
would request that you return all
except your own. I enclose
stamps to prepay postage.” —Phil-

Frank McLaughlin’s Start.
Here is a story abont the late
publisher of the Phi 1 ad e 1 p h i a
Times:
Upon one occasion in 1851-Frank
McLaughlin, who was then only
28 years of age—it happened that
the foreman and his first assistant
were absent and that John Mc-
Laughlin was at home ill. Young
Frank McLaughlin was then the
fastest setter of type in the office.
At the dinner hour on the day in
question, and when every -‘stick”
was lying at rest, Abraham Bar
ker, the father of the well known
Wharton Barker and himself then
one of the very few brokers in this
city, walked into The Ledger job
printing office with a stock list —
an enumeration of the figures of
the financial market of the day—
and expressed a desire to have it
put in type and 50 copies struck
off for immediate use.
By reason of the conditions de
scribed the e was no one in au
thority to attend him, and Frank
McLaughlin stepped forward and
received the order. The stock list
of that time, unlike the complex
and almost cumbersome affair of
the present day, was an abbrevi
ated statement, and two men could
easily place it in type within one
quarter of an hour. When Mr.
Barker asked the young printer if
he would undertake the task, the
latter answered with cheerful alac
rity, “Certainly!” Cutting the
list in two and turning to one of
the oldest compositors in the office
he said, “Here, Jim, take one of
these ‘takes’ and I’ll take the oth
er, and we’ll rush her through in a
jiffy.”
The man addressed walked for
ward with a frown on his face, and
after he had taken tne slip of pa
per and was moving back to his
case he muttered some half under
stood words about “giving a fellow
a chance to eat his dinner.”
“Never mind, Jim,” said young
McLaughlin, walking quickly after
him and taking the copy from his
hands. “I’ll do the job myself.”
During these proceedings Abra
ham Barker never left the office,
nor did he until the work was
bjompleted. Ho leaned quietly
■ainst a table, and, reading a copy
GOODFOREVERYBODY
and everyone needs it at ail times of the
year. Malaria is always about, and the
only preventive and relief is to keep the
Liver active. You must help the Liver a bit,
and the best helper is the Old Friend, SIM
MONS Liver regulator, the Red Z.
Mr. C. Himrod, of Lancaster, Ohio,
says: “SIMMONS LIVER REGULATOR
broke a case of Malarial Fever of three
years’ standing for me, and less than
one bottle did the business. I shall use
it when in need, and recommend it.”
Be sure that you get it. Always look for
the RED Z on the package. And don’t
forget the word REGULATOR, it is SIM
MONS LIVER REGULATOR, and there is
only one, and every one who takes it is
sure to be benefited. THE BENEFIT IS
ALL IN THE REMEDY. Take it also for
Biliousness and Sick Headache; both are
caused by a sluggish Liver.
J. H. Zeilin & Co., Philadelphia.
•‘Thank you!” he left the office.
The next morning the young
printer was surprised by receiving
a note from the customer of the
day before requesting him to call
at his office. He did so.
“I heard everything that took
place in The Ledger office yester
day,” said the financier, “and fully
appreciate your conduct. I would
like you to print the stock list for
me every day for one month, and
I’il pay you five hundred dollars
for the work.”
“Bnt it is not worth that much,”
a; swered the printer.
“It is worth that much to me
to have it done as you did it yes
terday,” was the reply.
That was Frank McLaughlin’s
first work for himself —his first
from an employer who paid him a
weekly wage. At the’ expiration of
the month the contract was ex
tended to three times that period,
and then to twelve months, with
an annual recompense of six thou
sand dollars.
Bear in mind that this was ac
complished by a young man at a
time when printers were receiving
only about ten dollars weekly, and
only in extraordinary instances
earning one or two dollars beyond
that sum. —Philadelphia Times.

The cotton manufacturing in
dustry at Pall River is reported to
be in a bad way. Last week the
print cloth market touched the
lowest notch on record, and the
demand is said to be practically
nothing. Schemes for retrench
ment are being discussed. Some
of the manufacturers are in favor
of running on short time, while
others propose a reduction of
wages. In view of this condition
of affairs, and the fact that cot
ton is so low in the south in con
sequence of the untoward condi
tions in manufacturing circles, it
seems that the administration in
Washington ought to put a stop
to the famine in India, the crop
failure in Ireland and the bad
conditions elsewhere which pre
vent people from buying clothes
and cotton fabrics. The admin
istration, it seems from the claims
of some of our republican con
temporaries, has been running the
Indian famine for the benefit of
the western wheat farmers; but
the wheat people have had enough
favoritism, and it is time to give
the cotton growers and manufact
urers a chance.—Savannah News.

THJS LAWRENCEILLE NEWS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1897
Let Well Enough Alone.
A bill has been introduced inti
the Legislature to elect judges and
solicitors by the pe pie, each judi
cial circuit electing its own judge
and solicitor. We know the ten
dency these days is to elect every
thing by a popular vote, but in our
judgement the election of judges by
the people will be most unwise and
result in injecting corruption into
the system that will be detrimental
to the best interests of law and
order and the goo : of society. The
modern methods of electing can
didates to office, will prevail and
we know what that means, a resort
to the use of money, whisky and
promises and a catering to this
one and that one to get their in
fluence to help elect them to
office, and its influence will be
felt in the trial of cases. It is
bringing the judge from the bench
to mix with the rabble to get their
votes, and thus besmirching h ir>
ermine in the filth of dirty politic:!.
There is a purchasable element in
politics that is either for a candi
date or against him, and for it to
be against him means his defeat,
therefore the judge would have to
resort to these dirty methods to
control this vote. If he should
refrain, his probably more un
scrupulous opponent would u e
these methods and be elected and
thus the unworthy man would be
elected to deal out justice to his
fellow man.
The election of a judge should
be kept as far from the corruption
of polities as possible, and while
there may be objections to any
method you may adopt, yet the
election by the Legislature or ap
pointment by the governor would
be the most unobectionable that
can be devised.
The election of a judge at the
ballot box would probably result
in some districts of several demo
cratic judges being defated. This
done the republican judges would
appoint the jury commissioners of
each county and they in turn
would place in the jury box an
objectionable element that so far
has been kept out.
We trust the Legislateure will
let well enough alone. —Marietta
