A new Kind of fish h s been
found in the waters of the Suwan
nee river, a few miles from this
place. They seem to be a cross
betweeu the saltnoa and shad, and
are said to be very fine in flavor.
Wfi were honored with two ser
enades last Saturday night. One
by the Lawrenceville string band,
who made sweet music. Later in
the night arotbev band called and
gave us the benefit of several sougs
and instrumental music.

very critical condition, and his
recovery is regarded as doubtful.

We had the pleas ure of spend
ing a very pleasant night under
the hospital roof, of our genial
friend, ’Squire A. G. Harris, a/
Suwanee last Thursday. While
there we were created to some ex
cellent music, from his accomplish
ed daughters; Misses Mollie and
Orie, assisted by Miss Eugene Rid
er, Miss Lida Hutchins. Dr. J. T.
Harris, and Cap/. Howell The
occasion was indeed pleasant, and

T ERRIBLE FALL
A MAX FALLS FIFTY TWO FEET AND ES
CAPES UNINJURED .
On last Thursday evening as
Mr. Lee Miller, a journeyman car
penter, etnp'oyed on the new cotir*
house, was adjusting the boxing
around the steple. fifty three feet
above terra firma, he accidentally
mashed his finger. Uoing of a
nervous disposition, the intense
pain caused him to sicken and
swoon, when he fell as above stat
ed. Mr. Miller made four dis
tinct falls, being stopped in his
descent by t ie scaffolding; his last
fall, however being over thirty
feet. It was a miraculous escape
from instant death, and probabfy
would have resulted fatally, if he
had not been inconscious at the
time. He sustained no injury to
speak of, except breaking his cheek
bone. Tuis morning he was walk
ing around his room, and expects
to he out in a day or two.

BURNED TO DEAT//.
Yesterday while the 12-)ear old
daughter of Mr. VV. B. Mann, who
resides about 3 £ miles somb of
this place, was preparing dinner
her clothing caught, and almost
instantly she was enveloped in
flames. TTis motlior and father
were absent at the time, there
being no one present but two
small children. Luckily Mr. Will
Bird, who chanced to be passing,
heard the cries of the unfortunate
girl and went to her assistance, but
to no avail, as every vestige of
clotbmg had burned from her oody
In her efforts 1,0 extinguish the
fire, she had set tire to nearly ev
ery bed in the house and but for
timely assisiance would have
burned it. The poor giri died
last nigh,aud wi 1 be buried to

establishment last week and f und

into a store room. He will add
a new department to his business
He said he had heretofore provid
ed for the living but was now
arranging for the dead. He will
open a first class undertaker's es
tablishment and with his arrang
moots with the large manufactures
will be prepared to offer Coffins
and Caskets and a general ine of
undertaker’s goods at lower prices
than tuey have heretofore been
sold. He is now prepared lo sup
ply the irade with any style, size
and price desired.

Not long since, alter college had
opened and we were in the differ
ent recitation rcoms, the alarm of
fire was sounded. We hurriedly
lefl professors and books to 'ake
care of themselves and lan to the
tiie. The scene was a sa<l one,
indeed, but not so bad as might
have been. The flames were rap
idly devouring the residence of
Rev. Farris end had become un
controllable, but by faithful work
of the students and citizens of
Oxford all the furniture was
saveJ It i* baid that one of tire
students, who was very anx.ous
about saving the contents of the
house, was seen in the dining
room, eating with the groates
coolness, whiie the flames were
playing around him. I did not
witness the act myself, but it is
well authenticated.
In addition to the regular
course in college heretofore. Ger
man and French have been added,
which speaks well for old Emory.
Prof. Magath, a foreigner by birth,
but who has made Oxford his
home ft r some time, was chosen
oy the iacuity to take charge of
this rlass. It seems he was not
acquainted wi/h the noted little
Florida bean. Some student had
the “grit” to etiew one of these
little c’-eatnres in bis (Prof. Ma
guth’s) room, whereupon he re
marked : “What was das I bear
what stinks so bad? ”
Work on the technologieal
building will begin in a few days.
The building will not only be a
credit and ornament to tha college,
but will be an ora-ueut and mon
ument to the liberality of Georgia
