HAD AN OBJECT.
While a New Yorker was nosing
around Birmingham, Ala., in
search of a corl or iron mine at a
bargain, a native accosted nim
with a request for 10 cents, and
added :
“Only yesterday I owned a coal
mine worth $20,000,”
“A nd why don’t you own it to
day?”
“Because a man got me drunk
and coaxed me to trade it for an
old mule.’’
“And how will 10 cents help
you?”
“Why, I want it to buy whiskey
to get him drunk enough to Irade
back for a b[itid dog and an old
shotgun. Stranger, don’t let me
lose $2 ,000 for ihe want of 10
cents.”
He got it.
During the war, when Col. Bob
Crocket was stationed at Camden,
he had a email sign, “Colonel
Crockett's Headvuarttrs.” posted
above his dour, JJrie night a unin
her of the boys, having taken
down the sign, went out to a farm
er’s henhouse and after taking
every chickens they could find,
left the sign. Tqe next morning
an old fellow entered Crocket’s
quarters and asked;
“Is this Coionei Crocket?’’
“Yes, sir.”
“Is this here your visitin’

“Where did you get tha ?”
“Found it this ruornin’ in my
hen-house.”
“What weie your chickens
worth?”
“Fifteen dollars in gold.”
“Well, old fellow, you break me,
but her* s your money, Don’t say

Crockett afterward learned that
a croupy old rooster and a sick

AYER’S PILLS.
A large proportion of the diseases which
cause human suffering result from derange
ment of the stomach, bowels, and liver.
Ayer’s Cathartic Pills act directly upon
these organs, and are especially designed to
cure the diseases caused by their derange
ment, including Constipation, Indiges
tion, Dyspepsia, Headache, Dysentery,
ami a host of other ailments, for all of g
which they are a safe, sure, prompt, and
pleasant remedy. The extensive use of these
Pills by eminent physicians in regular prac
tice, shows unmistakably the estimation in
which they arc held by the medical profes
sion.
These Pills are compounded of vegetable
substances only, and are absolutely free from
calomel or any other injurious ingredient,
A Sufferer from Headache writes:
“AVer’s Pills are invaluable tome, and
are my constant companion. I have been
a severe sufferer from Headache, and your
PILLS are the only thing 1 could look to
for relief. One dose will quickly move mv
bowels and free my head from pain. They
are the most effective and the easiest physic
1 have ever found. It is a pleasure to me to
speak in their piaise, ana 1 always do so
when occasion offers.
W. L Page, of W. T,. Page & P>ro.”
Franklin St., Richmond,Ya., June 3,1882.
“I have used Ayer’s Pills in number
less instances as recommended by you, and
have never known them to fail to accomplish
the desired result. YVe constantly keep them
on hand at our home, and prize them as a
pleasant, safe, and reliable family medicine.
FOR DYSPEPSIA they are invaluable.
J. T. Haves.” i
Mexia, Texas, June li, 1882.
The Rev. Francis B. Marlowe, writing
from Atlanta . Ga., says: ** For some years i
past 1 have been subject to constipation, I
from which, in spite of the use of medi- |
cines of various kinds, I suffered increasing
inconvenience, until some months ago T
began taking AVer’s Pills. They have
entirely corrected the costive habit, and
have vastly improved my general health.”
Ayer’s Cathartic Pills correct irregu
larities of the bowels, stimulate the appe- j
tite and digestion, and by their prompt and
thorough action give tone and vigor to the
whole physical economy.
