THE CLOSING YEAR.
This is the first of November,
and as we sit listning to tbe wierd
sounds of the first blast of (be
dying year, and watch (he embers
on the hearth, suggests the the
idea of retrospection, and if their
be sad hearts they are bid to re
member that if thiogs might be
better, (he{ might easily be worse.
Witb the trials or the sorrows of
the year, they are to recall the
fears which were not realized, the
anticipated troubles, which after
all did not pess.
To some the season brings re
lief, a happy sense of clouds roll,
ed off, some grevious burden ol
anxiety lifted, a grave doubt dis
pelled. a fre°h source of happi
ness extended.
Be grateful, indeed, foi the
things that did not happen to oar
friends, ourselves, and for the re
maining comforts of life. In the
luxury of modern life, we lose
sight of these daily blessings.
Give thanks for a sonny disposi
tion, if you have it, an ability to
look affaiis square in the face, and
lastly—but not least —for the fac
ulty of seeing the pleasaut or hu
morous side of every day life
DEATH'S HARVEST-
Within the last week there have
been a number of deaths in the
coanty that will bring sadness to
happy homes, and sorrow to a
large circle of friends and relatives.
While some of these deaths have
been unexpected, yet we are never
prepared for the loss of kindred
and fritudo- No matter how long
we have expected the footsteps of
the felt mesenger, yet when the
lots comes as a reality, we find
ou.st.v.s unprepared to submit ti
the decrees of fate.
On last Wednesday Mrs Garma
ny, wife of /fonorias Carmauy, of
Suwannee, passed away *tler i
tong sickness. For months she
had struggled against the fatal
moment hoping that some relief
would come yet hardly expecting
it. She was a good woman, ade
voted wife and a kind moiher, and
her demise leaves a disconsolate
husband and children to whom we
tender our sympathy in their afthc
tion.
Mr, T S, Garner, of Buford, has
been sick for over a year. Some
times prostrated and then rallying
until nope was entertained that he
would finally recover. Last spring
there »as a month or two during
which his friends and physician
hardly expected that he had a
week of time before him, and he
hid almost abandoned hope, but
with the summer he improved
and bis strong constitution and in
dom.table will gave hope of a per
maneut cure, but the early fall
prostrated him agaiu and on last
Wednesday he breathed his last
surrouuded by family and frienei.
Mr. Garner was a useful citizen,
full of energy and life, he was
ihe founder of Buford and one of
her leading c tizene, aiways at the
from in any work of improvement
or charity //is place will be haid
ta fill in the commenfty.
Mrs. Ambrose, wife of Jacob
Ambrose, of Buford, also died last
week. During las( spring it was
thought she ovule 1 not live through
the Sommer, but she improved and
and went to Florida for her health
whers she died lasi week.
But the saddest death, which it
becomes our duty to cron-ole tuis
week, was that of Mrs. Sallie am
brose. wif< of Thomas Ambrose’
and daughter of the late Geo. W.
F, Ciaig. Last winter she was
married to Thomas Ambrose ann
( be young couple started out with
bright prospects of a long, happy
and prosperous life. They settled
at their home on the Appalachee
and commenced liles journey hope
ful aud happy. Last Saturday
night shb was suddenly taken sick,
and died a( six o’clock Sunday
evening and was hurried at Fair
View Cemetary by the side of her
father, on Monday evening, with
her infant child in her arms.
