BASE BALL.
Base ball has been at its flood
tide for the hist weeK. The boys
have been waltzing t.round wi h
knee breeches and black stockings
awaiting to play any team that
was “spilin’ for a tight.
Last Friday Log inville’s team
came up a'ld tackled the boys and
gave them a close game. At the
b wining it seemed as though Lo
ganville wouldn’t be ‘‘in it,’ but
the tide turned and at the close of
the eighth enning the score stood
eight to nine, now all was excite -
ment: The next enning would
tell the tale and both sides were
resting on the pivot of expeota
tion and made an extra < ffort to
come off victorious. Even the
small boys climed up frees to see
the game and to guy the players.
The brass band was there, the
young ladies went over to lend in
spiration to the scent and the
players battled manfully for the
mastery. After a hotly con'ested
game ttie score stood 9 to 10 in
favor of our team, and the boys
snipped off the grounds with their
colors flying while the band play
ed Annie Koouey.
XNOTIIEB GAME.
Saturday evening the band boys
played the town boys and beat
ihcm by a good round majority.
Base ball season is now drawing
t# a close but our boys have accu
mulated so much steam that they
will likely play ’till Christma9t.
GAVE BOND.
Charles and Samuel Jackson,
the two young men charged with
robbing the post office at Auburn,
were carried before a United
States Commissioner in Atlanta
last Thursday and required to
give bond iu the sum of S3OO for
their appearance before the court.
This they readily did and were
ditchfged. They are cousins
and were connected with a band
of boys who had organized to com
mit crime.
These boys were well raised
and well instructed, but they had
been leading books - like the life
of Jessee James and liube Bur
rows. and became infatuated with
the idea of such a hero hleic
Suoh books are a curse to any
community They can mutralize
all of the home training of devo
ted parents. VVe have no doubt
hundreds of young boys have beta
led astray by the influence of such
trashy and vicious books.
It was thought that on account
of the youth of these boys the
case would not be pushed, that
some sort of settlement could be
affected. It seeme from the fact
of the arrest that the government
is not willing for the cases to be
settled.
GWINNETT SUPERIOR
COURT.
—T4sicqurt me t yesterday morning
at the Hutchins
presiding. ,
The jurors were promptly empan
nelled by Mr. (yuarterman, Sol. Kus
sell’s partner who is acting as Solic
itor in his absence.
The charge qf the Judge was iu
his usual clear and forcible manner.
One of the most marked changes
which we noticed was in the special
juries. Probably half the jury were
old Grand Jury members, who have
not for years served in a special ju
ry. This comes from the new law,
which provides that the names of
the Grand Jury shad be placed in
the Special Jury ]>ox, so that a
Grand Juror is as likely to be drawn
on a.Special Jury,as the Grand In
quest. The law is a good one and it
will be found to work satisfactory.
We frequently need old experienc
ed Jurors in the Travers Jury box
for it requires more business capaci
ty to settle the complicated issues
that are submitted to a Special Ju
ry than to disc ha go the duties of
the Grand Jury.
The following is the list of Jurors
empannelled for this week.
