The Georgia Republicans are
preparing to follow tlu-ir old
tactics. It will be remembered
that when this party was in
power years ago there was a con.

There was always a crowd of

agaii st the ins and the wrangle
waxed hot between contending
factions.
The mud sills of a long and
bitter fight were laid ii> Atlan
ta last week. The white ele
ment of the party is organizing
a McKinley club. They expect
to control the patronage and
there is some nice picking for
the hungry, to be distributed in
the State.
The colored element, which
constitutes*! he great bulk ot
the party, were not invited to
attend the lily white club and
they are kicking. They think
they’see a well laid scheme to
scoop all the fat places and give
the colored brother no bone at
all.
McKinley is to be aeiged by
the anxious aspirants and both
sides are’sending delegates to
influence the President.
The light haa jn«t begun and

DEATH OF A NOTED MAN.
J. H. Porter of Atlanta, Pres
ident of the Merchant’s Bank,
died last Thursday night.
While lie had been sick for
some time, his death was a
great surprise to his friends,
who di<t not regard him as in a
dangerous condition.
Mr. Porter was one of the
old business men of Atlanta
He has been prominent in bus
iness circles ever since tin- war.
He was considered one of the
wealthy men of that city until
the failure of the balik of which
he was President. His finan
cial reverses, in conneetion
with other matters, seem t i
have broken his spirit, and his
friends have noticed for months
that lie was not. the same man
he used to lie.
He succeeded Campbell Wul-
Incc as President of tbe bank,
and no doubt, his financial
troubles has had much to do
with shortening Ins days.
ANOTHER LYNCHING.
Two negroes were taken from
the jail at Jeffersonville, last
Thursday night by a mob and
hanged to the limb of a con

The crime for which they
were under arrest wasudasturd

It is now reported that an

Tin* Legislature meets on the

the report will leave nothing
more to lie done.
TO CCT WAGES.
The recent order of the Kail
road Commission redueiug the
treight on guano is creating a
considerable stir in railroad
circles. The roads fought the
reduction as long as they could.
Now they are arranging to cut
the wages of their employees so
as to make up the loss.
As a result, a monster peti

the men ulfected, urging the
Commission to revoke their or

working men will huve to bear

nation. When he appeared for
the first time on the platform
to discuss politics he brought
his fiddle along and the skill
with which he handled the bow
charmed the mountain boys.
He knew how to talk as well as
to fiddle and when the vote was

Bob's platform in the Inst,

GOOD FEES.
It makes a country lawyer's

SPECIAL ,SESSION.
The Legislature meets ie
special session tomorrow week
The only business that will
probably come before the body
will be tlie $O,l Kni expended in
the investigation of the Judges.
It takes almost six days to get
a bill through both branches
and as there has been no appro
priation for this money, how is
it to be paid. Perhaps the body
may by resolution request the
Oovernor to provide the funds.
Over 57 million dollars an

Wliis this is true in the East,

Maj. McKinley is having a
deal of trouble in fixing up bis

Billy Bryan is making lecturing

The bouse in which Flanigan
did his murderous deeds is said
to b<* luiunted. All sorts of
wild stories are circulated in
reference to ghosts being seen
there. And the house will prob
ably remain vacant for some
time. It is useless to argue
with people about ghosts; w hen
a nmn lias seen a ghost he
knows it.
Among tin persons who es

was a negro by the name of

criminal assault. It was ru

near the line of Oconee and a
crowd gathered and searched
for him with the intention of
mobbing him if caught. But
they failed to find him.
There was a big strike on tbe
Georgia R. R. last Sunday. An
order had been sent down that
brakesmen had to stay on top
of tin-cars and were not allowed
to go into a cab or engine to
waint. They claimed that this
was inhuman and the freight
conductors and brakesmen went
on a strike.

McKinley is to take dinner

him. Probably McKinley is
not fond of ducks.

The high tributes paid to
Col C. F. Crisp by his associ

and merit of the man, and that
his ability was as fully recog

in Georgia. Messrs. Turner,
Livingston, Tate and Lawson
were the members from this
State who delivered eulogies.
