HE IS TIRED OF HOUSE
WORK.
Edward Stanley of i It* Flush’
ing avenue, Williamsburg, is of
the opinion that throe years is
long enough for any man in his
station of life to mind children
and keep house. He told his
wife a few days ago that unless
a change was made he would cut
her throat. She caused his ar
raignment in the I/fiO Avenue
Police Court yesterday on the
charge of threatening to kill
her.
Stanley is about thirty-five
years old and his wife thirty.
They were married eight years
ago. Three years ago Stanley
lost his job and was unable to
find another. Mrs. Stanley got
employment in a laundry, where
she is still at work. In her ab
scence during the day Stanley
looked after the children and
did the housework. On Tuesday
ho rebelled and declared that
unless a change was made he
would cut his wife’s throat.
When he was was arraigned in
court yesterday he said to Jus
tice Goetting:
‘‘Look at me. I’m a man in
the prime of life. How would
you,'Judge, like the life that
I’ve have had for a long time.
Other married men go around
with the boys. I’ve been com
pelled to mind my own children.
I’ve washed and dressed them;
kept them always looking neat.
Then I’ve done all the cooking
for the whole family, besides
the cleaning. Not until every
thing was finished, everything
looking trim and the children
having their afternoon nap. did
I get a chance to read a novel
and smoke my pipe. I’ve often
snokon to my wife about having
a change. I think she ought to
let me have a chance to go out
and work, just for a change, you
know. It wouldn’t make any
difference to her- and would
make me feel like a new man.
But, no, she wants me to drudge
along. I simply said I would
cut her throat so as to have
something to say. I didn’t
mean anything wrong.
I’ve often said the same thing
and she never took *t up.”
“Yes,” interrupted Mrs.
Stanley, 4 ‘you once tried to pour
oil over me and set me afire.
You’re a bad man, and you
know in your heart that you
don’t want to work. You have
not worked for six years, and
when you did peddle cologne
you carried a gin mill in your
satchel. You’ve lived like- a
prince while 1 did all the work.
There’s a scheme in your mind
because you don’t care about
minding the three children any
more. I don't want unything
more to do with you. I'll mind
the children and do all the
housework, too. ” .

A young lawyer has started a
new industry at Marietta. lie
has been issuing divorces to ig
norant negroes who were tired
of their wives, charging them
$25 for the papers.
Several of the negroes bought
licenses und married aguiu on
the strength of the divorces
gotten, and two of them were
indicted by the grand jury lor
adultery. In defense they
showed their “divorce pa|»ers,”
and this is how the matter
came to light.
The lawyer had forged the
name of the judge and the clerk
of the superior court to the pa
pers he gave the negroes.
One of them came to the law
yer to help him out of the
scrape, and the lawyer entered
u plea of guilty for the negro,
on the charge of adultery.
So far threo cases have de
veloped, and it is not known
how many “divorce papers’ were
sold.
Judge Gober of the circuit
directed that tlie sheriff serve
papers on the lawyer to show
cause why he should not be dis
barred, but the sheriff could
not.find him, and he is still
missing.

A young lady explained to a

that he locked the fair form in
