WRITTEN FOR THE HERALD.
THE WINTER IS PAST.
Those who have sorrowing
hearts and have wept Ihrougl
a dreary winter, ehm r up! to
Hope smiles iu the brightenitq
skies and the morning light i
full of joy.
If we would conquer the ty
rant Care, and banish it from
our sides, we must allow dame
nature, with her geirtle smiles,
to speak peace to our troubled
hearts. In tlifc forests and
meadows the pulses of animated
life thrill with melody, and far
out on the breezy hills sweet
murmurs and song- are heard
We listen with delight at the
cheerful salutation of the liar
binger of spring—the bln-bird.
The little streams, freed from
the ice-fetters of winter, are
singing songs of victory as they
merrily dance abvig. With
keen delight we listen Jo th<
murnmrings and splashing of
Yellow River; to our enraptur
ed souls it sounds like voices of
our loved ones we have heard
iu dreams as they are borne to
our listening ears by the magic
of the softly Mowing winds.
The snow and ice have been
conquered by the warm rains,
and everywhere can be seen lit
tle tiny shoots and modest vio
lets, so happy, as it were, to
awaken from their winter’s tdr
pidity.
We find ourselves trying to
join in the hymn of praise, and
while we are trusting, we must
turn our thoughts from the
lonely winter we have past to
the summer’s golden days.
Clouds dismal and dark have
hovered over us. yet, Hod lias
shown to us Ilis beautiful cove
nant-bow, and wo realize that
“the winter is past.” Our tears
may have fallen fast o’er faces
furrowed with care, but tin
star ot hope is chasing the tears
away. With rejoicing, then,
let us look abroad on this beau
tiful earth and be
—tortile echo of spring is heard,
and “the winter is past..”
V, E. Johnson,

A TRUE STORY.

Now. listen, friends, to a sto

Of a youn ' man who suddenly
died,
And let it l>e a warning to
you,
To not with his habits be allied.
lie was a young and hand
some man,
Who often took a drink,
But this lie did to lie fashion

And did iftit stop to think.
The worst of ail. In l loved
A girl i tender and fair;
With parent’s love and friend

Sin- knew not ought of care.
He won her love with efforts

Believed an upright man—
Ho made her dream of the

As only a lover can.
Lover and husband are dif

And when she was his own
. This habit bad, and growing
worse,
Wa s soon to her well known.
She plead with a woman’s
tenderness,
But pleading was iu vain;
llewas a slave and would not
yield,
Although it gave them pain.
'So years went hv and love
was gone;
No home, but just a place "to
stay;
No man to guide a willing
wife,
No husband to obey.
No father for tho children
w ho came
This wretched hit to share;
Their very existence was a
curse.

GEORGIA BEATS PENN.
\MR AND GAME OK RAM- IN AT*
« I.ANTA FOLLOWED HV DE
FEAT AT HOME.
There was a crack game of
ball in Atlanta last Thursday
between the University of Penn
sylvania and the BuivAsily of
, Georgia.
The Athens hoys came over
hardly hoping to gain a victory
over the far famed Pennsyl
vania team that had had such
a run of success that, they
imagined themselves invincible.
They had been successful in
Virginia and North Carolina
uid expected to dangle the
sculps of the Georgia boys on
their belts with ease.
There was a large crowd in
attendance to watch the game
and cheer their friends, but no
such a vietbrv was anticipated.
The Georgia boys bent them 4
to I, and the great crowd yelled
themselves hoarse at this unex
pected victory.
The Athens boys hurried
home on the first train to re
ceive the congratulations of
their friends. They were met
at the depot by a brass band
and a large concourse of citizens
who welcomed them back after
a glorious victory. They liter
ally took m the town, painted
it red and went home rejoicing.
But the victors did not enjoy
their triumph long. On Satur- |
day the University met the
Wake Forest team of North 1
Carolina, on t he At hens grounds
and were defeated by a score of (
12 to 11.
Perhaps the Georgia team was
too confident and lost their
prestige when it. was only two
davs old. Such is life.
