The Soldiers’ Home, near At

the home built and dedicated
with such imposing ceremonies,
is to go under the hammer of
the auctioneer. This is the de

Fulton county. And the Trus

will allow it to go to sale.

As there is no hope of it ben

to help, it had as well lie sold
and the proceeds as far as pos

who gave it, as they are cer

freely gave it for a purpose,
and that purpose has failed,
and the money belongs to the
donors.
It was a great mistake to lo

was not what was inteiuh-d by
the contributors, and its failure
lias demonstrated what we said
at the time would be its effect.
Had the money tieen invested
in the country, buying large

soldier could have truly called
his home, it would have been a
success, and hundreds of people
would today be enjoying its
benefits.
ABOUT CUBA.
The l’resident should he pret
ty well informed as te the con
dition of affairs in Cuba. Gen’l.
Lee is there, besides the other
consuls, and a special conimis
sinner. Judge Calhoun, has
jus< returned from an investi
gation of certain Cuban mur
ders of citizens of the United
States, and if the House passes
the belligerency bill, which
Heed is trying to prevent, the
President will he prepared to
aet with all I lie lights before
him.
YVeyler seems to he a wonder
ful liar. He claims that dur
itig the time he has been on the
island there have been Ofi 000
Cuban soldiers killed, while it
is a well known fact that the
insurgents have never had more
than 00,000 men in the field at
one time.
YV’eyler has u faculty, like
some other people, of blowing
his own horn He has fought
women and children with the
same t'eroeity lie did an armed
foe, but he has not Conquered
the rebellion, and we do not be

ATLANTA IS HAPPY.
Tt has’*something new to
quarreljjubout, and the street
crossings arc lively. In fact.
the whole town is lively. The
newspapers have a live sensa
tion these long hot days and
can fill their columns with in
teresting discussions.
The cause of all the furor is
that the city council last Fri
day abolished the old hoard of
education .composed of eighteen
members, and pnssed an ordi
nance that in the future it
should only have half that
number, and then proceeded lo
elect the new hoard. In mak
ing their selection all of the
old members were nnceretnone
ously dropped except YV. S.
Thompson, president of the old
board.
This action came like a clap
of thunder from a clear sky.
And there has been a howl of
dissatisfaction ever since. Not
only the members who were
dropped and their sprecial ad
mirers, hut a large class of cit
izens are in open warfare against
it. Protests innumerable, mass
meetings and the press are
challenging the good faith of
the council, and claim that it
is a political move to give cer
tain men control, and to carry
the school business into the po
litical maelstrom in every city
election.
YY’hatevor may l»e the out
come—whether the ins or the
outs succeed —the city is super
latively happy. They have gut
something to fuss about and
quarrel over.

Marsha) Clower, a young bus
iness man of Atlanta, went up
to Tallulah Falls last Thursday
on an excursion. During the
day he and a negro, YY’ill Mar
shal, were passing along one of
high clitfs, near the falls, when
Glower’s hat blew oil’. In at
tempting to catch it he lost his
footing and fell to the bottom
and into the whirl pool. The
alarm was given by the negro
and the crowd made every effort
to rescue him to no avail and
he was drowned in the pool.
At last account his body had
not been recovered.
Some of the friends nl Clower

WALKING*ON WATKK.
(’apt. Hob Cook, of Americits,
lias invented slums by which a
person can walk on water with
safety, lie has been giving ex

and has been quite successful
and it is attracting attention
all over the country. He has
accepted a wager of SI,OOO that
he can walk 4&0 miles, from
Pittsburg to Cincinnati, in L r >

confident of his ability to do it.
Men will follow him in boats to
see that there is no trickery in
it.
The Spanish papers get up
some racy articles showing how
easily Spain could whip the
United States. Their bluster
ing reminds us of the bravado
of poor little Greece. In Go
days after war is declared Spain
would lose all her possessions
on this side of the Atlantic.
A nation that cannot in
two years crush the insurgents
in Cuba would make a very poor
showing in holding her own
against this county. The
United States can pul a million
of men in flu* field in six
months and sup|Hirl them with
ease.
GWINNETT’S SHAKE.
Some of the Georgia papers
are purading the names of sue

in the State has furnished more
active business men to that city
