HOW A BOY SUCCEEDED.
From the Presbyterian Banner.
Boys sometimes think they
cannot afford to lie manly' and
faithful to the little things. A
story is told of a boy of the
right stamp, and what came of
his faithfulness.
A few years ago a large drug
firm in New York city adver
tised for a boy. Next day the
store was thronged with appli
cants, among them a queer
looking little fellow, accompa
nied by a woman, who proved
to bo his aunt, in lieu of faith
less parents, by whom he had
been nbandonfd. Looking at
this waif, the advertiser -;aid:
“Can’t take him: places all
full. Besides, he is too small.’'
“I know he is small,” said
the woman, “but he is willing
and faithful.”
There was a twinkle in the
lioy’soyes which made the mer
chant think again. A partner
in the firm volunteered to re
mark that he “did not see what
they wanted with such a boy;
he wasn’t bigger than a pint of
cider.” But after consultation
the boy was set to work.
A few- days later a call was
nude on the boys in .be store
for some one to stay all night.
Toe prompt response of the lit
tle fellow contrasted well with
the r ductance of the others.
In the middle of the night
the merchant looked in to see
if all was right in the store,
and presently discovered this
youthful protege busy scissoring
labels.
“What are you doing?” said
he. “I did not tell you to
work nights.”
“I know you did not tell me
so, but I thought 1 might ns
well be doing something.”
In the morning the cashier
got orders to “double that boy s
wages, for he is willing.
Only a ft w weeks elapsed be
fore a show of wild beasts pass
ed through the streets, and,
very naturally, all hands in the
store rushed to witness the spec
tacle.
A thief saw his opportunity
and entered at the rear door to
seize something, but ill a tw ink
ling found himself clutched by
the diminutive clerk aloresaid,
and. after t. struggle, was cap
tured. Not only was a robbery
prevented, but valuable articles
taken from other stores were
recovered.
When asked why he staid be
hind to watch when all others
quit their work, he replied,
“You told me never to leave
the store w hen others were ab
sent, and 1 thought I'd stay.”
Orders were immediately giv
en once more: “Double that
boy’s wages; he is willing and
faithful.”
Today that boy is a member
of the firm.

The tests made so far by the

TELL THIS TO THE WASH
WOMAN.
System is what oils t he wheels
of much arduous labor, aud by
carefully systematising the
work it is possible to reduce the
labor and vexation of washing
day to a minimum.
The soiled articles should be
carefully sort* d into three piles,
the finest and daintiest in one,
the medium iu another, table
linen and bed linen, shirts, etc,
and the colored in the third.
Bran water or water in which
a little turpentine has been put
in the proportion of a table
spooufnll to a pail will keep the
color from running in black
stockings or colored goods.
Stained pieces should be put
to one side for special care in
the sorting process. Fruit stains
can be removed by pouring boil
ing water over them.
For other stains try pure hot
water first before using chemi
cals, Don’t soak them, as it
will cause the stains to spread.
Try salts of lemon for removing
ink spots, rubbing with alcohol
for grass stains, and a solution
of oxalic acid for iron rust; then
rinse in week ammonia water.
All stains will yield more read
ily if treuted as soon as made
t lau if left until the next wash
ing duy.

THE DOCTORS KNOW THAT

Worry, rather than work, is

A perpetual round of duties

best relief from the weariness is
change of scene ami air.
Typhoid fever is due largely
to choked drains Itoth within
and without the body.
It is very unwise to tempt the
appetite ul one who is indis
posed; the cessation of uppetite,
es|>ecially at this season, is a
a warning of nature that the
system is in such a state that
food cannot be easily digested,
and a little judicious lasting
may be of great benifit.
Drugs should be avoided
whenever possible, and that the
mouth should be thoroughly
rinsed and the teeth carefully
brushed after taking any kind
of medicine.
EVERY ONE OUGHT TO
KNOW
That chloride of lime spread
around wherever rats frequent
will abolish them.
That a tablespoon fill of vine

boiled will them tender.
That all the mending for the

That in cutting warm bread

That a clean apron worn

That perfect rest may l>e had
