IN THE MOON EIGHT.
HKIiMEANT .IACK HAD I.OPT AIX
THAT MASK I JFK HEAR To
HIM.
One day it was whispered in
i iur camp before Petersburg that
' Sergeant Jack’s wife had died.
Sergeant Jack was reserved and
rather morose, and none of us
knew Y.li thsr lie had a wife or
not until the rumor came. The
sergenutV demeanor told us
that the story was true.
The soldier’s mental suffering
was plain to all who looked in
to his face, lie had loved her
well, and the blow came too
suddenly. In a \ve< k s time lie
grew so old and haggard that
ono could hardly identify higi
as. the same man. 'Some of the
men whisperingly deelan'd that
he would do some desperate
thing, others t hat he would bear
it like a man and get. the best
•of it after awhile. We loved
Sergeant Jack, every man of us
in 15 conij'ftiiy, and lie bad the
jk sympathy of all his comrades.
Things were thus when it
came our turn one night to go
into the rille pits on the line
m >t the Confederates. We
had t march down from camp
by e v< red ways and crawl into
the pits like so many serpents.
Death was there waiting for
guv man who but showed his
head above a pit. Not a -finger
k could bo held up without a do/,
r on bullets being tired at it. On
this night it was bright moon
light—so bright that one could
see every leaf and blade of grass
and every insect moving about.
• The great guns were silent after
a hot day’s work, but there was
a spiteful and ljuirderous fire of
musketry along the rifle pits.
The bullets whizzed above our
hoa>is in a vengeful way. and
the officers kept crying. “Look
out, men —keep down!” as we
near d the pits. Men dropped
oil’ here and there till only six
of us were left, and Soargeant
Jack had charge of placing us.
The men in the pits lmd to
come cut first, and as soon as
they got the signal they began
the movement. We were watch
ing them as they wormed them
selves along the ground when

Sergeant Jack suddenly uttered
a groan. It was not a groan of
pain, bnt <»f anguish—such a
sound ns a strong man might
make when he fell ins heart,
breaking over his grief. All of
Us turned to Ini.k at him, nnd
as w> did si lie sf' p|M*d out from

“P.mn. sergeant—come Imek

man. None of them would put
it down to bravado. He was
not a des rter seeking admission
to their lines. We shouted to
them not to shoot—that out
sergent had bet his mind—and
tin -e directly in front heard us
and withheld their tire. Those
on flic flank*, however, could
not catch our words, and prob
ably believing that some hos

away at the target in the moon
light. We saw Sergeant Jack
halt, totter, throw up bis hands
and sink down, and we know
that ho was dead —had courted
death b' cause there was noth

i crept out and rescued liis body
for a soldier’s burial. More
than a dozen bullets bad struck
him, and on bis face was a look
