TOWN AND COUNTY T«« Cash System.—As we have to pay the cash for every thing we use about oar house and office, we are necessi tated to do a strictly cash business. We will take wood or provisions, at market prices, in lieu of the money. Although anxious for patronage, we prefer a limited eash business to an extended credit one. o Church Directory. HftfVices at the Methodist Church on the first Sunday iu each mouth, morning and night. Rev. F. F. Reynolds, pastor. Sunday-school in the afternoon, at three o’clock. Prayer-meeting every Wednes day night. Services at the Baptist Church on the second Sunday in each month, morning and night. Rev. W. T. Thornton, pastor. Services at the Presbyterian Church on the third Sunday in each month, morning and night, and at night only, on the second Sunday. Rev. J. L. King, pastor. Agents J or the Gwinnett Atlas. The following parties are authorized to receive and receipt for this paper: Mrs. Olaiborns, P. M., C. A. Allen Lawrenceville. J. O. Hawthore, Auburn. J. T. Douglass, Cumming. H. R. Hannah, Stone Mountain. W- H. Baii.it, Yellow River. S. W. Davis, Duluth. Other names will be added as soon as banded in. Lawrenceville, Ga., June 7, 1871. The official advertising of Gwinnett county is done in the Gwinnett Atlas, has been since thai paper first started, and will continue to be ; and no other paper is authorized to publish the same, or receives any pay for so doing. We deem this notice necessary, as the Atlanta Constitution, which formerly did this advertising, sees fit to continue doing so, thus causing some of our county people to think it still has the printing, and thereby tending to injure the Atlas. M. Y. Brand, Sheriff, Jas. T. Lamkin, Ordinary, W. L. Vaughan, C. S. C. Cumming, Ga., May 29th, 1871. Until further notice, the legal adver tisements of Forsyth county, Ga., will be published in the Gwinnett Atlas. JOHN A. SIMMS, Sheriff. JOHN T. BROWN, C. S. C. WM. D. BENTf.Y, Ordinary. Suwannee Depot. Are we to have a depot at Su wannee, on the Richmond and Atlanta Air-Line Railroad ? This question seems to be left in as much doubt as the old problem of “ who struck Billy Patterson.”— A mouth or two since, we were informed that the depot question was settled—that the future town was to be laid oft' next day, and the lots at once exposed to sale. We had never been at the laying off, baptizing and christening of a town, and concluded tube on hand. I« company with a friend, Col. 11.. we set out for the location deter mined on, and after about two hours ride, arrived at a place heretofore known as “ More’s old field there we found a number of citizens congregated, and one of the directors of the road. Every thing looked like business. "There was a map of the town, streets, alleys and blocks of business houses marked out and numbered. There was the surveyor with his compass and chain, wading through the tall, wet broom-sage. Here were the chain-carriers aud men with axes. We couldjiot let the opportunity pass of taking a hand, so that,in after years,as we walked along its crowded streets, throbbing with life and trade, we might be able to say, with a significant nod of the head, “we are one of your founders — we helped to lay off these lots and streets, and lay the foundation of your greatness, when there was not even the bark of a dog to disturb us.” We took one end of the chain, and over hills and gullies, through briar-patches and broom sage, we went, and, as the man ahead would say, “ stick,” we would sing oul, “ stuck.” We thought the town l ad “ stuck,” but alas! “ Tlie wisest plans of mice amJ men, Aft gang a'glee." Wc came away confident that Gwinnett could boast of the fifth town; but soon there came a whisper, “ ’twas but a breath ” that there was doubt ; it had uot been “ signed, sailed and deliver ed.” There was a screw loose somewhere, but nobody knew where. After mature deliberation wc have come to the conclusion that the difficulty arose from not putting an internal revenue stamp upon the town as soon as laid off. This will be a warning by which we hope to profit hereafter. We next hear that the depot had taken a “ new departure,” and now understand it has got back to the old land marks. We do hope our friends, who are negotiating this matter, will determine the question at once. It is a matter in which we have taken and feel an interest. The citizens <“>f t>nr town, acting on the belief that the depot was fixed, have petitioned the Postmaster General to give ns a daily mail from Lawrenceville to Suwannee, instead of the weekly mail we now have. We are sat isfied a depot at that point will be to the interest of the people and the railroad. .Change of Schedule. —We would call the attention of our Atlanta ex changes to the fact, that the mail schedule from Stono Mountain to Lawrenceville has been changed. — The mail formerly left the Mountain at 7 a. m. ; it now leaves at 12 m , ar riving at Lawrenceville at 4 i>. m. It would oblige this office, and a large number of subscribers, if the Atlanta papers could arrange to send us their morning editions, instead of the eve ning, which would enable us to get the papers on the same day they are published. -•••••—— — Sudden Death ok an old Citizen. —Wc arc informed that Mr. Wil liam Bailey, an obi and highly es teemed citizen of Iliits county, died suddenly last week. At breakfast time he appeared to lie as Well as usual; after breakfast he went out to assist in boring a cow’s horh, and while tlms engaged, remarked to some of the family, who were present, that he believed he would fall, lie was immediately carried into the house, and died in a very short time. LaWKEN’CEVILI.K AS A SI'MMER liE sort. —A number of families from Atlanta and Savannah are spend, ing the summer at Horn’s Hotel. Parties who desire to find a quiet retreat from the bustle, confusion and heat of the cities, will do well to visit our village, where they will find fresh air, pure water, good hotel accommodations and a gentlemanly and obliging land lord. —— Save Your Fruit. —This is the season to save your fruit. Peaches, tomatoes and green corn, put up in the “ Eureka jars,” will retain their rich flavor for twelve mouths. We have a good supply of these jars at this office, for sale, very’ che p. fcjT Coventor Bullock, of Geor gia, has written a letter to the KuKLix Committee, which cm tains some sentiments not palata ble to the Radical party. In titut letter he evinces an intelli gent and jealous appreciation of the rights of tlie States and of Georgia, even under the declara tory statutes of Congress, lie maintains his views on this sub ject are those which properly be long to the Republic.itt pary He' quotes from Jefferson a con cise and able presentation of tiie original aud lasting foundation of Republicanism, which might be studied with profit by those who assume to be (he exclusive oppo nents of Republican principles. The Governor also refers to other new-fangled doctrines of the Rad ical party, and condemns them in bold and positive terms. VVlier Governor Bullock reproves the managers of a party, it must be bad, indeed. —Philadelphia Aye. — f MdT In illustrating the fruits of adveitising, an exchange says: “ A family in Florida lost their little boy, and advertised for him in a daily paper. That very afternoon an alligator crawled up out of the swamp and died on the front door step. In his stomach was found a handful of red hair, some hope buttons, a pair of hoot heels, a glass alley, a pair of check pants, and a paper collar. The advertise ment did if.”— New Era.
