TOWN AND COUNTY The Cash System.— As we have to pay the cash for every thing we use about oar house and office, we are necessi tated to do a strictly cash business. - We will take wood or provisions, at market prices, in lieu of the money. Although anxious for patronage, we prefer a limited cash business to an extended credit one. Church Directory. Services at the Methodist Church on the first Sunday in each month, morning and night. The official advertising of Gwinnett county is done in the Gwinnett Atlas, . has been since that paper first started,' tand will continue to be; and no other paper is authorized to publish the same, or receives any pay for so doing. We deem this notice necessary, as the Atlanta Constitution, which formerly did this advertising, sees fit to continue doing so, thus causing some of our county people to think it still has the printing, and thereby tending to injure the Atlas. M. V. Brand, Sheriff, Jas. T. Lamkin, Ordinary, W. L. VAUGHAN, C. S. C. Commino, Ga., May 29th, 1871. Until further notice, the legal adver tisements of Forsyth county, Ga., will be published in the Gwinnett Atlas. JOHN A. SIMMS, Sheriff. JOHN T. BROWN, C. S. C. WM. D. BENTLY, Ordinary. The Cemetery. The neglected condition of our cemetery lias been for years a re proach to our town. A number of ladies, headed by Mrs. Gordon, got up, last year, a subscription for the purpose of building a neat and substantial fence around it. The fence is built, the trees topped, and the general appearance im proved very much; but we must not stop here. The grounds ought to be cleared off, undergrowth cut down, head and foot-stones put up at graves, where there is no mon ument All this can be accomplish ed in one day, if the citizens, who have relatives or friends buried there, would agree upon a day and meet for that purpose. There is no improvement which indicates a higher type of civiliza tion, enlightenment and morality in a community than a beautiful cemetery, laid off with taste and planted with evergreens and bow ers. An intelligent stranger, com ing into a community, generally forms a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the people from the condition of their grave-yards, churches, roads and public build ings. The notorious Jim Fisk is re ported to have refused to subscribe a dollar to assist in building a fence around a cemetery, for the reason that it was useless, saying: “ Those who arc in there, can’t get out, and those who are out, don’t want to get ini ” This is true; but whether we want to get there or not, we will be put there sooner or later. Death is repulsive enough in itself— “ For in that sleep of death, What dreams may come, When we have shuffled ofl this mortal coil I ” But the idea of being buried in »n old, dilapidated grave-yard, covered with old fence-rails and brisk, where the friend who comes to visit your last resting-place, basto scratch about in the leaves to Ind the little mound, adds terror even to the “ King of Terror#.” tW Dr. Jesse Lowe, of our village, has one and a half acres of ground near his residence, upon which lie made a fiue crop of wheat this year. After cuttiug his wheat, be planted the same ground in corn. Five weeks from the day be planted, hi# corn was six feet high vnd taßseling. “ How is that for hK|h?” Kv Our Devil says he is not a hettiny man, but he will wager two tacks against a nail, that there is # man iu this town who can carry more chickens in one buggy, mth °ut tieing theii., Bian any man in file Sttttn Mineral Spring's. Mineral springs seem to be all the rage now. Atlanta has got one—of course she has. What is it Atlanta has not got? If nature had not been kind enough to make that provision for her, IT. T. Kim ball would have taken the matter in hand, and with the assistance of Tweedy’s “ ice manufactory by stame,” would have got it up to order. Lawrenceville has a spring, too. We havn’tgota “Kimball House,” nor an ice manufactory, nor street, railroad, nor a skating rink: our mayor does not hold a daily levee, in order to furnish us with local items, but we have got a mineral spring. About a half a mile from town, on the Jefferson road, near the residence of Col. Hutchins, is a spring, which is pronounced by our Physicians to be valuable for its medical properties. The water is strongly impregnated with sul phur and iron; it gives tone and vigor to the stomach, and aids the secretions. We understand some of the water has been sent to Atlanta to be subjected to a thorough chemical analysis. We are not sufficiently posted up, in technical terms, to tell what its effect will be upon the system, but if any one has a curiosity to know, we will get some of our medical friends to expatiate upon it; and if anybody, outside of the medical profession, understands any more about it after they have read it, than they did before, we will send them a bottle of “ Pain Kill It.” We understand that an effort is now being made to have the spring covered and seats prepared for the accommodation of persons who desire to visit it. We hope it will be done. Fink Yield. Mrs. William Kemp, of this county, brought to our office this week some fine specimens of cucumbers raised by her this year, and she states that they arc the last of' one hundred and twenty raised from ‘‘one vine.” Her method of raising them is very simple, and yet we have no doubt it will succeed during any summer. She has a hole sunk in the ground one and a half feet deep, which is partially filled with manure and soil mixed. She then put in a jar with a hole in the bottom, and kept the jar filled with water. She also made us a present of some fine onions, grown from the seed, which were planted last February. We bad been under the impression that fine onions could not be raised from the seed, but were raised from the “ but tons,” and had to he planted in the fall. It may bo that kcr seed is a new variety. g£T As a negro boy, waiter at Born’s Hotel, was letting down a window sash, one night last week, the sash, not being securely fastened, started to fall, and, in attempting to catch it, his 'hand struck the glass and passed through it, cutting his arm severe ly—severing the radial artery. He would have bled to death io a very short time but for the arrival of assistance. Dr. Mitchell re ports him doing well. The Court-House. —Our enter prising Ordinary is having a long needed improvement made in the Court-room. On each side of the stair way he is having built a tier of benches, rising one above the other, and extending back to the wall. This will be a great con venience to the people who have to attend the sessions of our Supe rior Court, and will enable our es teemed Judge, Hon. C. D. Davis, to “ invite those who come to see him to take a seat.” Plant Turnips. —ln our agricul tural column will be found an ar ticle on turnip culture, which we commend to our readers. It is unnecessary for us to say anything to our farming community upou the importance of this crop. We would, however, impress upon them, in view of the prospective short crop of corn, the necessity of planting a larger crop than ususd. — - i— • —a ■ Fine Rath. —We had a fine rain last Sunday evening, which was very much needed.
