Gwinnett Farmers Club met on Saturday, the 12th inst., at Bcthesda church —It being the time for the anual address and for the election of officers for the next agricultural year. The Edi tor of this journal having been previously solicited to deliver the address, did so in a speech of about one hour in length. The Club solicited a copy for publica tion in the Atlas, but as it would require too much of our space to 1 publish the address entire, we have agreed to publish such ex tracts as will likely be of most general interest. This will be delayed, however, until our next issue-, for want of space. The following officers were elected for the next year : Time. E. Winn, President. ThOs. H. Mitchell,Vice-President. Alston Martin, Secretary. Samuel Martin, Treasurer. The Weather. —Thcfe lias been frequent showers passing about within the past few days. The rains are partial, however. In some sections there has not been any lack for rain, while in other north ms of our county the farmers have not had sufficient rain to sow tu nips. With poor crops of wheal and oats and short crops of corn, tlie turnip crop becomes of tilt first importance to the farmers, because it is upon this crop they chicly depend to obtain a snffi ci.incv of food to fatten In.ge in the 1 all and feed other stock tin oug't the winter. Need Working.— We have been requested to call the attention of the proper authorities to tiie con diti"n of i tir streets and alleys, whit h need working badly. We resp -ctfully suggest that this mat tesr needs at tending to at once.— We learn 1 hat the roads in the country ai c being worked, and onr sheets should be at least kept in as good irder, if not better As p ople are now generally at Heistise, the present presents a very favor .ble opportunity. Looking Ui*. Our farmers liavi ig stly got through with theii woi k, are coming to town more freely, and, in consequence, our strc :ts are beginning to as sume a more lively appearance 1111111 they did a few weeks ago.— ■Our country friends work hard, a large portion of their time, and we ale pleased to see them enjoy ii g a brief respite from their la b >rs They know how to appre ciate it. Kkmoving the Stijmi's. —The stumps of the trees which were blown down in the public square, ■du mg the storm, a tew months since, are being dug up, by order of our efficient Ordinary. We trust that Judge Lamkin will have them hauled oft - at an early day, and thus remove what is at pres ent a great disfigurement to the beauty of the square. VVe are informed by Major J. T. McElrany that the post-office depart ment has established a post-office at Bay Crock, in this county. »<•!». ■ . V\ e would call special attention to our column of i)e\V ad\eitistem'culs. It is a pleasure to us t > be able to present to our readers ihc tusinbss cards of first-class, live and liberal houses in Atlanta. The section <sf country in which the An as circulates trades largely to Atlanta, attd will be compelled, on account of tfie scarcity of wheat, to buy most of the flour used until the next crop is harvested. We have made application only to first-class bouses for advertisements, and can recommend these gentlemen as good business men, prompt, hon orable and accommodating. West & Edwards. —ln this house, Col. L. P. Thomas, Jr., formerly cf Lawreneeville, will he found. These gentlemen are young men, who have an established reputation for honor able dealing,, and have built tip, even with tlie competition around them, a large wholesale trade. We # know them personally, and recommend tlrom. They keep a fine assortment of family groceries, flour, bacon, etc. We clip from the Li Grange Repor ter the following notice of Mr. West, the tenior member of the Aim : Mr. West is a Troup county boy, and went to the “Gate City” in 1865, at a time when the largest business was being carried on in a tent. By close personal efforts, he has worked liinr self from a clerk up to one of the finest business men of the city of At lantn, whose annual sale-*, in the gro eery line, now amount to #300,000. This only shows what a young liith of pluck and business qualities can do. We commend the energy of Mr. W. to our young nn-n generally. Morris & Bun.— These gentlemen ha e lately moved into thei new and commodious brick store, on Peach tree street, and offer, through our columns, a cordial invitation to their old customers to call and see them, and examine their large and well se lected stock. They sell either at wholesale or retail. -It is gratifying to see young men, like these broth ers, who came out of the war with nothing, throwing off their coats and going to work, and not repining over their misfortunes. Their success is sufficient evidenco of the esteem in which they are held by their custom ers. Head their advertisemeht. R. 11. Goodman. —At the cornet of Wheat and Peachtree streets wiM he found the business house of this clever, genial gentleman. He keeps a well selected stock of groceries, bacon, flour-, lard, etc. He is an old Athens merchant.* and well knofrn to our people. Call and see him ; if you do not buy his goods, it will at K-afit afford you pleasure to make his acquaintance. Our young countv man, Charles S. Thomas, is in this house; There are but few young men who are superior to Charlie as a salesman. If you will give hitn an opportunity* and he don’t sell you goods, it will be your fault; not his. Charles A. Howell. —Our friend, Charles A. Howell, on Decatur street, proposes to buy all kinds of country produce, and pay the highest market price for it in cash or barter. Stop and see him as you go into Atlanta; “you may go farther and fare worse.” He is the son of Col. C. C. Ilowell, formerly of this county, and is a thrifty, energetic young man. Wm. \V. Holland & Co.—ls you have any business in Savannah, call on thin firm, at No. 173 Bay street. They are auctioneers, and deal largely in country produce. Mr. Holland i informs us that Savannah is the best 1 market in the State for wild lands. We have long been satisfied that it would be to the interest of our mer chants to trade with Savannah, in groceries, iron, rice, etc. They im port directly from Europe, and »- e can’t see why her merchants can’t sell very nearly as cheap as New York houses. Aik-i.tkb ilocsE.— We would call at tention to the card of this House. It is k*. cated on Pryor street near the passenger depot, and is a pleasant place to stop good fare, well furnished and ventilated rooms, and an agreeable and accommodat ing landlord, who recognizes the fact money is scarce, and charges' the very reasonable price of fifty cents for a single meal or lodging. Wc believe Mr. Keith ic aa old citizen of Cherokee. Fairview Church. — We attended di vine services at this old church last Sab bath, and was much pleased with the able sermon of Rev. J.N.Bradshaw, President of the Southern Masonic Female College at Covington. He preached again at night, in the Presbyterian church in our village. LA WRENCE VILLE MARKET CORRECTED WEEKLY BY B. E.
