I NDREW JACKSON svas an ex
ample of,the trinmph of will
power over difticulties. His
whole life swas a histery of
overcowing ebstacles, Many of these
obstaeles, perhaps the most serious
oues, were ip Lis own nature. One of
them was a hos anger that constantly
rearcd up enemijes in his path. Anoth
o was 9 wild and reckless disposition
in youth. A third was physical disease,
One of his militayy campaigns was
mude at a time when he could hardly
git in the saddle because of pain. All
the latter part of his life he suffered
trow ill health and wounds.
Of the outward obstacles in the way
of this ipdowmitable man, poverty was
perhaps the chief. The loss of both
puarents in youth added so this handi
cap. The second wasg & rough pioneer
eonvironment where his life was con
stautly in danger. The third was the
neglect and opposition of other people.
At one time during the Creek campaign
e was left almost alone. The termn of
enlistment of his men having expired,
nearly al} of them syveat home, At an
othier time the force under his cow
mand was disbanded by the govern
ment. He was always antagonized by
the chief men in congress aud by all
ihe moneyed interests.
Despite these fearful adverse odds
he won, There are few examples of
guccess in all our history more con
spicuous. He won against his persounal
encemies at home, He won in all his
battles. He won over congress. He
swon against the national bank. He
svon in his fight with nullification.
His mottoes are illuminative of the
man. He often said, “Nothing is done
¢ill ail {s done’” Another phrase con
stantly on bis lips was, “A clean vie
tory or a clean defedat.”” When others
ol ted to his plans, he silenced them
by peremptorily exclaiming, “J will
take the responsibility.” At one time in
youth, when a raft on which he tried
to cross a swollen stream svas pearly
