ORIGIN
Of a Famous Human Food.
The story of great discoveries or
Inventions is always of interest.
An active brain worker who found
himself hampered by lack of bodily
strength and vigor and could not
carry out the plans and enterprises
he knew how to conduct, was led to
study various foods and their effects
upon the human system. In other
words, before he could carry out his
plans he had to find a food that would
carry him along and renew his physi
cal and mental strength,
He knew that a food which was a
brain and nerve builder (rather than
a mere fat maker) was universally
needed. He knew that meat with|
the average man does not accomplish’
the desired results. He knew that
the soft gray substance in brain and
nerve eentres is made from Albumen
and Phosphate of Potash obtained
tfrom food. The he started to solve
the problem.
Careful and extensive experiments
evolved Grape-Nuts, the now famous
food. It containsg the brain and nerve
building food elements in condition
for easy digestion.
The result of eating Grape-Nuts
daily is easily seen in a marked stur
diness and activity of the brain and
nervous system, making it a pleasure
for one to carry on the daly duties
without fatigue or exhaustion.
Grape-Nuts food is in no sense a
stimulant, but {8 simply food which
renews and replaces the dally waste
of brain and nerves,
Its flavour is charming, and being
fully and thoroughly cooked at tire
factory it is served instantly with
cream,
The signature of the brain worker
spoken of, C. W. Pest, is to be seen
on each genulne®package of Grape-
Nuts.

HOME-MADE SCREEN.,
An artistie looking'screen can he
made at home with simple tools by
any person who has taste for decora
tive art,
The screen is of tan burlap mount
ed on a weathered oak frame, and is
decorated with strips of thin wood in
the form of figures that looked like
lanterns or lamps set on tall, slender
stems. Two of thesge figures were ar
ranged on each panel, A plain screen

stencil designs and a little ingenuity
will produce the article at one-quar

WHITE BEDSTEADS.
The cheapest of white enamel bed
steads may Dbe made attractive with
dainty and at the same time inexpen
sive trappings. If one is only wise
enough to select a bedstead with gim
ple, graceful lines and one in which
the expense lies in the quality of’the
enamel used, instead of in brass or
naments, the reward will be great,
The plain, graceful white ename?
bedsteads minus brass knobs and
gcrolls, minus scrolls of all kinds, just
heavy enough to be firm and practi
cable without being clumsy, are both
sanitary and pretty in a dainty, light
bedroom. Combhined with white en
amel furniture nothing could be pret
tier. If one wishes to have the rest
of the furniture painted a light, deli
cate gray, lavender, pale green, etc,,
and artistically stencilled, the bed
may be made to match. Unless some
definite color scheme of this kind is
to be carried out throughout the
room, however, it is better to have
a plain white bedstead than a col
ored one.—Harper’s Bazar.
TO CLEAN FEATHERS.
If one desires to have feathers ren
ovated and does not wish to be robbed
by feather renovators, they may be
easlly cleaned at home. There are
reliable firms who clean feathers, but
the men who drive through the eoun
try professing to do such work are
apt totbe frauds.
The great objection to doing this
work at home is handling a heavy
te ,E%'nqther.gwgfion, is the Wb&
of drying mh%but w o
these may be easily overcome.
Though many people consider feath
er beds unhealthy and out of style,
they are used in many country homes
and are very comfortable for winter
nights. Of course the feathers should
be clean and in clean ticks, or they
are unhealthy.
When making a feather bed, first
put the feathers into a thin muslin
slip just the size of the tick and slip
the tick over this. When the tick be
comes soiled it can be washed with
out the trouble of dealing withn loose
feathers, The feathers in the thin
tick can be washed without taking
out, by putting in a tub of warm wat
er and washing on a board as ordin
ary ciothes. Make the water soapy
hefore putting in the feathers. Rinse
in clean water and hang on the line,
On a warm windy day they will be
dry in a few hours and be as light and
fluffy as ever.
After the feathers are clean and
dry it is easy to put the clean heavy
ticks over them. Pilllows may be
treated in the same fashion as they
really become soiled sooner than
feather beds. If your feather beds
are made in the old style it will pay
you to get the feathers into thin slips
the first time the ticks are washed.—
