When, And How Shall We Settle
South Ceorgia, |
o o
In our Igue of August 26th we:
asked, How ghall we settled Somh]‘
Greorgia? and now we ask when ghall’
this be done. We answer, now s
the time. To settle Charlton County |
cannot be done by our fertile lands. |
To write 10 the East and West that‘
we have good lands wiil not bring.
settlers. Before we will ever settle
this section the people here 10ust
work up- that is they must not be
satsfied with jusy what they now have
for by alittle work, push they will
find in the future mucl that is in.
store for them. We must ‘“blaze
the way” and others will follow. We
muste ceme together, and with a
unite effort make this section what
it can be by such an effort,
We might mention our schools,
Are they such that people will come
amoug us for such an advantage?
Practically every home gecker who
writes about our section ask about
the school, What do you tell him?
Our people should be more interesed
in the schools, they should be im
proved. We shomid have a good
g, stem. Our Churty Conmiss 01ers
should be more iuterested in the
school work tham what they really
are. How can we expect to have
good schools when we put a teacher
in a one hundred dollar hat, on a
salary of twenty-five dollars per
month and then they wait six months
to draw their pay, Wil that Jbring
settlers? Levy a tux and have goud
schoolsin every district, then we
can talk about them.
How are our churches, are they
sich that we can say we have good
churches? Is the influenc of the
church doing good in this County?
if not it is our famt.
Our roads are holding back set.
ters, Tet us make o change .in the
road business, build a few bridges
and stop this going ten miles our of
the way because we have had rain
fora day. We can say just here
that our people are improving the
roads by the working of the conyicts
and we will soon have better roads
throughout the county. \What work
has been done is good and we are
proud to see that this step has been
taken, but before we can say ‘we
have good roads throughou thet
county it will take some time, but
in some sections they are now good.
Now that Sauth Georgia, shall
be settled and Charlton County
with fifty thousand wore people in
it, we must: begin the work by im
proving it and making it suchk a
county that ¢ will have a light wnich
cannot be hid, then it will be that
setders will came among us, and live
iinghe land that flows with “milk
and honey.”
