A great Educational rally will ba held at tha- Comity Court House
on the 20th of November. Among tha eveats of 'ths day will bz th
address of State School Commissioner Jere M. Pound and the gpellin:
contest in . which pupils from™all parts of the county ave invited and
urged to take part. ;
. This contast will be one of th bsst moves towardsadvinen
the cause of education, that this part of the State has ever witnesse.l.
The Board of Education will give the following prizes: , Ten
dollars in Gold to the best spellor, Fiva dollara to the second best and
Two dollars and fifty cents to the Third best, and besides thess Goi !
prizes there will be several One dollar prizes given by individuals to
fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh best spellers.
The plan of the contest s as followes: Five Hundred words will
be submitted for study through the columns of the Charltoa County
Herald and St. George Gazette. !
These words wilt ba published One hundred each week for five
weeks, 80 that every pupil in the entire county will have an opportunity
to see and study them.
The Contest will be conducted in the following manner: All
Contestants will meet at the Court House on the day appointed and
fifty'words will be selécied from the list of Five hundred and pronounc
ed (givenout) to the contestants who shall write the words as pronounc
ed, then all papers will be taken up and graded and those who make o
perfect grade on the first fifty will remain in the contest tor list of h
next fifty (those failing to make perfect grade dropping out) and g 0 ou
until the best spellers are determined.
All pupils under 20 years of age providing they have never taught
school and are bona-fide residents of Charlion County will he permitsed
to enter the contest. Look for the first 100 words, next wealk.
