To Enlarge a Coat.
A coat or jacket that is too tight
across the front may often be suf
ficiently enlarged by the addition of
a narrow vest of cloth in white or
some light color. Rl
When the jacket is tight all over.
the case is still not hopeless. Rip
one seam at a time, press the seam
edges flat, then baste them) to a
strip of strong lining goods, applied
to the under zide of the cloth. Make
the two raw edges meet; in this way
from one-half to three-quarters of an
inch may be rained at each seam.
After every seam lls treated, try on
the coat, and if the necessary in
crease has heen secured, complete
the work by strapping each seam
with braid or a fold of cloth, says
Woman's Life,
It is possible to calculate before
hand how many inches larger the
jacket should be and also how much
may be gained at each seam.
If the jacket has a dart at the
front, the effect will he better if the
strapping is continued to the shoul
der. ;
Prescriptions Not General.
Some people look on a doctor's pre
seription in the same light as a coos
ery recipe and pass it on to their
friends for general use. They forget
that some symptoms may come from
totally different causes and that to
take a medicine prescribed for a
friend is a very risky thing to do and
may do a great deal of harm.

Raising the Maine.
Representative Sulzer, of New
York, is going to make another ef
fort to pass his bill for raising the
wreck of the Maine in the harhor of
Havana. There has lately been a
movement in the state of Maine to
stir up action in this matter. Near
ly everybody concerned has at one
time or another urged such action.
The Cubans 'want the harbor clear
ed, but refrain from meddling with
United /States property. The navy
department would undentake the
work, but can not without congres
sional authorization. Why congress
should hesitate, no one can explain.
It is ithe more deplorable because
it encourages the Spaniards to say
that we are afraid that an examina
tion of the wreck would show that
the explosion was inside. Now it is
certain that Americans are not
afraid of the itruth, whatever
it may be. The officers of
the mnavy are not afraid of
the truth. On the contrary, they
have been most urgent that this
occasion of reproach should be re
moved. The house ought to take up
Mr. Sulzer’s bill at the earliest op
portunity and pass it without more
delay. National self-respect demands
it.—Philadelphia Ledger.
