What a blessing it is that lifeisa
struggle. If everything were made
easy for us most of the joy of living
would be taken away, There is an
exhileration and blessing in the eff
orts we put forth, often against
great odds, and every vietory gain
ed means added strength and power
‘Governor Hadley of Missouri sug
xest as the remedy for the high cost
-of living that every family keep a
«cow and some hens, That may do
very well in rural districts and vil
lages, provided each family cansat
isfactorily decide who is to do the
milking on cold mornings and feed
the chickens. But where the dwell
erin a city flat is to keep poultry,
to say nothing of the cow, is a puz
gle, and it Is city people upon whom
the high prico of living presses
most acutely. ;

Beautify The Farm, |
s M
Make your rural home beautiful
Lay out spacious grounds around
the farm house, plant shade trees,
lay gravel roads and plant flowers.
Don’t lay up all your net earning
for the benefit of yvour heirs and
lawyers, but spend some of it in be
autifying your home. The farmer
who always shuts his eyes to the
aesthetic features of his life and
serews himself down to the task of
making money, loses a large portion
and the biggest portion too, of his
existence. His home should be an
attraction to himself; to his wife,
and above all to his children. Un
plesant homes in too many instan
ces drive the sons of farmers to the
towns, to excitement and dissipa
tion, and to wreck. Such sons do
not generally leave plesant and be
autiful homes,

Keep Your Town Alive.
A town is very much like an in
dividual. To be flourishing it must
have energy and enterprise. The
people in a town should remember
that the individual prosperity de
pends to a large extent upon the
character of the place in which
their business is located. Every
public measure should be libvmll:\'
supported by all, especially the bu
siness men. At the present day
there is as much competition be
tween towns as there is among per
sons and business enterprises, A
man seeking a location will invari
ably select a town that is up tothe
times, and is eagerly in favor of ev
ery modern improvement. A town
in these modern times can't afford
- to be peopled with old fogies or
antediluvian fossils who ard con
tinually kicking at every enterprise
To make a flourishing town you
must believe in its future and work .
for it, encouraging every improve
ment. Make a special effort to ex
blt some evidence of improvement
in your own work and chumctor,f
Help every worthy man, help ev-|
ery enterprise, and encourage every
.gd man to locate in your town

The Wrong S,irit, f
There is not any town that will‘
ever grow and amount to much as
long as the people therein are al
ways trying to outdo each other,
or inother words trying to “snow
under” the little man. Neither will
a town grow, and have big enter
prises as long as the people all try
to do the same thing, and keep one
man from doing it all. Many times
we have seen it in our own town,
that when one individual or firm
wou'd start an erterprise that would ‘
mean much, and would be profit
able to the men engage therein, that
as soon as the work was begun,
somebody, for fear that he would
make it all, would start the same
thing, so after a little while both
went under. Two factions in any
town either socially orin a business
way, will hinder the town's prog-!
vess. If Folkston is afflicted with
such it is time our people were ap
plying the remedy, {
We do not wish to censure any in
dividual, but want to rid our little
town of the strife and the evil feel
ing that is existing, and there is on
ly way to do it~ that is for our
people to become of one mind and
live as brothers. Be friendly, be
interested in each others welfare,
and all live trying to help each ot
her, and soon our little town will
be on the road of progress.
~ For years we have tried to have
a meat market in town, but because
when one would start and others
would smell the smoke of that mon
ey made from selling stake at ten
cents, they thought they must have
r:m market too, therefore we never
?Imd it but for a short time, until
the past year we have been more
lueky. « Inour town we have a
first class millinery store, ond one
is all we need and only one should
sell the goods, but you can look a
round and see hats at other places,
of all styles, and in any shape such
as bread trays, bee hives, bushel
baskets ete. One of our merchants
has a peanut roaster now, and next
week somebody else will have one,
just wait and see. For vears and
vears we have needed a first class
livery and sales stable, and could
never get it, but a month ago the
business was begun, and now if our
people will stand by the business
we will keep it, but if somebody
else decides that two is better than
one, the time may soon come when
we will have none. |
Let our beople be of one accord
and work together and pull tog(‘t-i
her, and live right, then the time
will soon be that Folkston will l)o!
a different town altogether, ‘
Why Such Marriages Fail,
When Miss Anita Stewart of New
York married prinee Miguel of Bra
ganza in a little Seoteh highland
church a few months ago there was
a brilliant scene. - Scoteh pipers in
highland dress made a brave show
and discoursed music as only pipérs
can discourse it; soldiers lent a mar
tial air to the proceedings and vil
lagers gazed upon the scene with
delight and wonder. Surely it was
a novel and romanie wedding, but
the sequel seems to have taken
much of the romance out of it. The
princess is finding that an omptyl
title and a characterless husband
are a poarexchange forthe Stewart
millions. Like most of such mar
riages it seemsto be a falure. The
Prince who was a notoricus spend
theift, accumulated ante wedding
debts to the amount of over SI,OOO,
000 which the Stewart money was
expected to payv. Now, apparent
ly the money is not forthcoming
and the Prince’s furniture is seized
by angry creditors and will be «old
to pay his debts.
In the nature of things a mar
riage that is not based on affection
or moral grounds, but which is sim
ply a barter of good American dol
lars for a foreign title and an impe
cunious spendthrift, is almost sure
ly doomed to failure and consequent
bitterness and disapoint ment. And
yet we suppose that to the end of
time some heiress will be caught by
the glamoreven asa moth is caught
by alighted candle,
Southern Road
To Boom South,
Campaign For New In
dustries and Settlers
Announced by Finley.
. e
Washington Feh, 8 — President,
Finley announces that the South
ern railway will, in the near future
thruits hands and indust rial depart |
ment, again enlarge the publicity
and promotion work sot the devel
opment of the country reached by
its lines.
It is now felt that not only the
business conditions in the country,
but the local situation inthe South
east, warrant a larger campaign for
thelocation of industries, the bring
ing of new settlers and a general de
velopment work, that is the resump
tionin full of the company’s efforts
tobuild up the southeast. In carry
ing out this policy there will bea lar
geruse of the trade. agricultural and
other news papers and periodiecals of
the North and West the publication
of many special phamphlets, exhib-.
its at many Northern fairs, and a
larger work in northern Enrope.
The Southern has found that one
lnf the best metnods of publicity isin
the exhibitsof the products of its
territory at the larger fairs held in
the North and West, and more at
tention than ever will be paid to this
line of work. The South will be ad
vertised in northern European coun
tries by the circulation of specially
prepared matter, and by the use of
newspapersina way that is consis
tent with ourimmigration laws and
asis permitted by the laws of the re
spective countries.
The Southern has maintained for
some years a Kuropean agency of its
land and industrial department with
headquarters in London, which will
carry on the prosecution of active
effortsto interest land seckers and
investors from that side of.the ocean
inthe South. The most thorough
co-operation possibleis to be given
tolocal business and other organi
zations in the development of the
various communities along the
Southern,
—Titzgerald Enterprise.
New Rail Road
A movement is now on foot to
build a railroad from Americus to
Ashburn, Wayeross and on to St
M:lr_v;. which is consummate will
take in three small railroads oxisit
ing including the St, Marys &
Kingsland railroad.
A meeting was held Americus a
few days ago, which city wants an
ontlet to sea and Wayeross is an
xious to have St. Marys the tem
mius. The board of trade at
Wyeross sent a committee to
Americus to present the advantage
of a part like St. Marys, ‘
We are almost on a direet line
from Wayeross to St. Marys and
should this road be put through,
we see no reasons why inductmentti
sheuld not be made to bring it by
here. Folkston, Homeland and‘
this seetion shOuld wake up and
see the advantage of a road runn
ing through our midst from thes‘
two points,
