Some Terse Expressions From Us.
New words make an amusing
study. The Boer war gave us “trek,”
“mafick” and “commandeer,” and
the coronation the verb to ‘“cor
onate.” Motors and airships are re
sponsible for fresh expressions. The
former found us to “mote,” “mo
torites,” ‘“garage” and ‘“chauffeur,”
and the Jlatter supplled us with
“aviators,” “aeronauts” and “avia
tion” And we are now familiar
with the useful terms “wires,”
*“phones” and ‘“taxis.”
Then our American friends have
made us a present of some terse
phraseology. When they want us to
be punctual they tell us to be “on
time,” and when they wish us to be
quick they ask us to “hustle.” And
they have taught us the word “bud”
for a girl, “waist” for a blouse, and
“multi” for 4 millionaire.
All these are portable terms, but
we are now burdened by their pon
derous words “hotelisation” and
“electrification.”” Then, whether for
good or ill, a certain set of words
‘have come into constant uge in books
and journalism, Of these arq@ the
well worn ternis “weird,” “quaint,”
“'keen,” “cheery,” “trend,” *“outlook,”
and “unthinkable”; and when writ.

tion” and “entertainment.” The Eng
lish language may be less pure than

new colloguialisms.—From the

Electrically Cured Meat. :
A Cleveland packer explained a
new process of curing meat recently
to a convention of packers. With
electricity, he said, he could do in
from three to twenty-five days what
under the old -salt pickle system
takes from twenty-five to one hun
dred and five days. The discovery
came about in this way:
About ten years ago a man was
testing an electric motor, using a vat
of salt apd water as a makeshift
rheostat. One of the electrodes in
the vat was weighted down with a
Luick, which after the test crumbled
in the hand like dry cake. The elec:
tricity had driven the sa't particles
into and through the brick. As he
was interested in the packing busi
ness, the experimenter wondered if
electricity couldn't drive salt inte
meat. He tried it, and a great meat
curing plant has been erected in
Cleveland.—Collier's, ‘

Her Scalp Itched Intolerably,

The beginning was a slight itching,

Having used Cuticura Soap merely as

I used them according to directions
for perhaps ‘six weeks, then left off,
as thé disease seemed to be eradi

months ago, there was a slight return
of the scalp humor. I commenced
the Cuticura treatment at once, so
had very little trouble. On my scalp
I used about one-half a cake of Cuti

Ointment in all. The first time I took
six or seven bottles of Cuticura Pills
and the last timethreebottles—neith

Since then I have had no scalp trouble
of any kind. Standing up, with my
hair unbound, it comes to my knees,
and had it not been for Cuticura ‘I
should doubtless be wholly bald,

Printers’ Marks.
The interrogation mark or “point”
(?) was originally a “q” and an “o,"
the latter placed under the former.
They were simply the first and last
letters of the Latin word “quéstio.”
So, too, with the sign of exclamation
or interjection (!). In its original
purity it was a combination of “I"
and “o 0 the latter underneath as in
the question mark. The two stood
for “lo,” the Latin exclamation of
joy. The paragraph mark is a Greek
“p,” the initial of the word “para
graph.” The early printers employ

sentence was objectionable and
should be cut out. ‘
