Those patrons who were forfu
nate enough to be in attendance
at the opening of school Menday
morning and heard what the new
principal. Mr: L. S. Vinson, had to
say, were much impressed with
the young man’s sincerety of pur
pose and abilitv to earry out the
plans he haslaid out for the year’s‘
work, for hims2lf ond those work
fog with him,
w 1 Vinson told the pupils that
he did not bring a multitude of
petty rules to follow and if they
prid heed to the first—proper ap
plication to their studies, they
would have no trouble with the
second, which was good behavior.
Mr. Vinson asked the patrons
for their support and assured
them that he had come here pre
pared, to do his part. it followed
then, that with the three gronps,
parents, teachers and pupils do-|
ing their fnll share that we should
have cne of the most successful‘
terms in the history of this school.
Officers for the year were elee
ted at the Baptist Sunday School
on last Sunday as follows: Super
intenaent, Mr, J, M. Spencer; as
sistant superintennent, Mrs. N, J.
MNorman: secretary and treasurer,
Joe Londerece; organist, Lillian
Norman.
There will ke services Sunday
the 11 at the M. E, church by
Rev. F. O. Coffin after which the
evangelist, Mrs. Mildred Jarvis,
isscheduled te hold a series of
meetings. These meetings are
veing looken forward to with in
terest for Mrs. Jarvis has been
very successfulin her work.
A group of young people gath
ered at the home of Miss Vera
Barnwell on Thursday to celebrate
with her. the occasion being her
birthday. Several hours were
spent pleasantly in games, espec
ially “"Proms.” Those present in
cluded Louise Berker, Elsie Vin
son,Miss Tayior, Vera and Uladys
Barnwell, -Toseph and-Louis Lon
deree, Arch Sapp, Bruce Averill,
Drew Thomas, George Phillips,
and Mr. Ott.
Mr. and Mrs G. W. Holzendorf
are looking forward to the pleas
ure of having Mrs. Holzendorf’s
sister aud niece, Mrs, J. E. Gil
lett and daughter, Miss Helen, of
Atlanta, with them for the winter,
It is hoped that Mrs, Jackson of
Thompson, will also decide to
come. Mrs. Gillett and miss Hel.
en will arrive this week.
Dr and ‘rs J.R. Vinsonand
family are moving this week tc
their new home in Callahan. This
family has lived here for many
years. Their friends will regret
to see them go but are sending
them off with best wishes lt:n'l
their success and happiness in
the new location, 1
Mr, T. W. Wrench was over
Friday, combining business of
looking over the field in the in
terest of his paper and superin
tehding the moving of the Foiks
ton school trucks, which have
been in storage here during the
summer
Mr. aud Mrs. Pat Varn and
daughter, Miss Lorena, were visi
tors in tewn Teursday, The Varns
are pleasantly [ocated in Jack
sonville,
Mrs. N. W. Smith, Gerfrude
and the small children, James and
Mirnie Merie, have returned to
Jacksonville after a month’s va
cation at the apartment in Miss
Baugh’s house.
St. George School News.
- The St. George Junior High
School opened Monday morning
with an enroliment of 130. A
short session was held in the au
ditorium, and a great number of
the present at this meeting, which
‘was an inspiring sight to the
teachers. The principal made a
short talk, in which he insisted
on the cooperation of each and
every patrou. A number of pe
trons madz responses, in which
they pledged their support and
cooperation. Plans are to be
made soon for the organization of
aP. T. A. This will help to bring
the teachers and patrons into‘
closer touch with each other.
The teachers for the year are
as follows: Loy S. Vinson, of
‘Douglas, principal; Miss Eleanor
Cockrell of St George, 4 and 7
grades; Miss Carrie Gamble of
Summervllle. 5 and 6 grades; Mis
Willie Mee 7jiles of Ideal, 2 und
3 grades; Miss Sarah Witcher of
Union Point, 1 grade.

taxable proparty of said county as per
digest of 1927, be, and the same is
hereby levied (not including school
tax levies, both county wide and under
the McMicheal Act and other acts for
local tax districts, as will hereinafter
appear), for the follewing purposes,
{oo-wit:
1. Three (3c) cents on the SIOO, to
build or repair court house, or jail,
bridges or ferries, or other improve
ments according to eontract.
2. Ove-half of one cent (1-2¢) on the
SIOO, to pay Coroner’s fees that they
may be entitled o, or due them by the
county, for holdinf inquists.
3. Fiveandone-half (51-2¢)cents¢nthe
SIOO, lo pay sheriffs, jailors or othe:
cfticers fees (including county police)
thot they may be legally entitled o
out of the county.
4. Two (2¢) cents on thegloo, to pay
the expense of the county for bailiffs
at court, non-resident witnesses in
criminal cases, fucl, servent hire, sta
tionery and the like. |
5. Three (3c) cents on the SIOO, to
pay jurors the per diem and mileage
compensation.
6. Four (4c) Cents on the 100,to0 pay
the expenses incurred in supporting
the poor of the county, and as other
wise preaeribed by the code.
7. Five (5) Centson the SIOO, to pay
the principal of the public debt falling
due and to provide a sinking fund for
the future installments of the bonded
debt of the cuunty.
8. Five (s¢c) Centsonthe SIOO, lo pay
the interest an the bonaed debt of the
county.
9. Forty (40c) Cents on the SIOO. to
maintain and construct public roads
and bridges of the county,
10. Twenty (20c) Cents on t heslo(
for the upkeep of dipping vats, the
‘buying of chemicals, the biring of in
spectors asd riders, the repair and up
keep of line fence, for the purpose of
cempleting ticx eradication of the
county as required by the act of 1918.
